LOL Mark.

Bugsy, question for ya. Couldn't find anything under the tail section. I followed the wire back from the spark plug and found it led to something under the tank. How will I recognize the lightning ignition? What is the difference?

Sorry brother, it's the ecm. I can take a picture of mine, it's in pretty much the stock location.

Right side, under the tail's skin, on the outside of the frame, kinda opposite the fuse block under the seat, if you remove that, er the seat that is...

Is that a vague enough description?

Edit: It would be an ignition control module on a M2, not a Engine Control Module (ECM). Just for a bit more clarity in the part we are discussing. It plugs into the main harness.

Here's what it looks like in the accessory book:

And here it is, tucked up under the right side tail section, it's pretty tight under the S1 tail, there's more clearance under your stock M2 tail:

The face of it will either be stamped with numbers listed above, stock part numbers, or have a blue sticker with lightning on it.

Yeah, I think the 02 model year got the ICM with the same body as the S3/X1 ECM.

This is what it should look like if you took the tail section off. You can see the ignition module with the white lettering, "FOR RACE USE ONLY".

Littlebuggles, mine is an '01 M2. You can't really see it but, in the pic I posted it says, For '01-later M2. Whats funny is it's the same part # as the pic you posted, 91438-01Y but it shows the updated module.

I believe the stock module has a "soft limiter just before the red line and then a "hard" limiter at red line. The race module gets rid of the "soft" limiter.

It would mean you've got the "basic" stage one upgrades to your bike, assuming it is jetted properly for the intake and exhaust on the bike, which is more likely than not.

Grow into the power, and know that to get more, besides perhaps some fine tuning, you will probably need to do engine mods, heads, cams, 1250 kit... that sort or thing.

Funny about the body of the module Jacob. I think we've discussed it on the board before, Rat, Brin, Brian (Tattoodnscrewd), and probably a handful of others, Bomber, Roadthing, uh, Blake... I think they all know the specifics on the M2 specific unit much better than I do.
It's also odd that my 01 specific parts manual shows the pigtail version rather than the plug in box,. But there is a variation in the later model years that I can never manage to keep track of. Perhaps there was a mid-year change? But obviously what is on the bike will tell you what to use to replace it if there's a need to.

Whose bike is that above?

I think it was mid-year, the squared plug is for 2001½ and later (well 2002) and they have their own corresponding race module too. Earlier ig. modules are the pigtail type. My 2000 was running the pigtail one, on account of this dyno test:
http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/384 2/10398.html?1059591514
The race ig. module has a teeny-tiny bit more power in the range 3500 - 6250 rpm.

Since then, I changed to the Dyna2000 Single Fire setup, again, because of a teeny-tiny bit more power from 2500 - 6250 rpm. See: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/384 2/16587.html?1126114650

Just sounds cool with single fire, like a Ducati more than a Harley.

You know, when you first posted that I was looking for an ECM, on a carbureted bike, I frowned because it meant that I clearly don't know half as much as I think. Appreciate your advice, I shortshift the hell out of my bike when I'm not holding first gear forever. Front wheel actually came off the ground for me yesterday, briefly.

Here's another question for anyone still entertaining the new guy. My bike pops hard under even light engine braking. Sure, it adds character, but I don't like it. Doesn't seem right.

As long as we're discussing growing into this powerhouse some guy <s>let me steal</s> sold me, I'd like to take the time to discuss a few psychological differences between my bikes.

The Blast despite being gutless is in some ways a more dangerous bike. It's effortless handling inspires confidence...WAY TOO MUCH confidence, as I learned on that gravel strewn ramp. Additionally the fact that it's gutless means that you end up much more familiar with your bike because you're using everything it's got leaving the driveway (damn near). The Cyclone on the other hand I find myself only using a quarter throttle to merge onto the interstate...there is a (small) concern lingering in my mind that when I have to call upon all my ponies I won't know how to handle them. (speaking of which how much power do you think my bike puts out? 110?) Furthermore the Cyclone, when you scrape a peg you for damn sure meant to.

In my next post I will surely have found the doodad so we can figure out how much more of a steal my bike was.

Excellent, Excellent stuff Jayvee.

ignition box

Whatchall thank? Also take note of my impressively well routed, inline fused cigarette power adapter. Must have been a master engineer who put that thing up in there. : D

BHP5?

One of the nice things about these bikes is you don't have to be a master engineer to work on them. Check the wiring and the fuse, but it looks clean from here.

Littlebuggles, I found that in the pics section. I dont remember who posted it. I had been looking through the pic archives and saw it just after reading yours and Henshao's post about the module and thought it was perfect for what he needed.

Jayvee, Does it really sound different? Got a sound clip or vid of the single fire ignition?

What I was facetiously trying to imply was that my second modification to my bike, after the tail bag, was the poweradapter. Is it obvious what I use the bike for? : D

To be honest Bugsy I don't see any discernable part nos on the object in question...but it doesn't LOOK like a racing part to my uneducated eyes.

Bottom right in the pic of the box, would be top left if right side up is stamped in white letters "BHP5"

Numbers on the stickers are difficult to make out. But as Jacob said it is pretty clear if it's got the race unit on.
