I'm having a tough time deciding what to do with my 09 1125CR. I have a little extra cash and have the options of either buying a brand new bike and ditching the CR or putting a few grand into the bike to my liking. The charging system issue plagues my thoughts every time I take the bike out, custom rewind worth it? Thinking about fresh paint and a few carbon parts too. I hate to say it, but, the Japanese bikes are looking really good about now and have a great reputation for dependability and parts availability.

Given your criteria, I'd say sell

Don't get me wrong, I really like the CR. I love the handling and low end grunt. Gets tons of attention from people who don't know what it is. A solution to the obvious would really put me at ease though.

There are two solutions.

The first, and cheapest, is to have Custom Rewind rewind your 09 stator - either to 09 specs with better wiring/insulation, or to 08 specs.

The second, and more expensive option, is to install the 08 stator & rotor.

I completely understand where you're coming from. I was terribly unhappy with my 08 initially, not due to any major thing wrong with the bike, but a bunch of minor things.

I've fixed them, and it's an awesome bike now.

Get the Custom Rewind improvements, put the race ECU on, and ride the wheels off it.

Says in your profile you're in New Orleans, and from what I know that's not twisty road area, so personally I'd think the best part of the machine is going to waste. No offense meant btw. Sounds like you'd like to do a little custom expression on your ride, so I'd say get something that will suit your riding needs better and will be easier to build like you want it, and not worry about any issues. Let it go to someone in an area with some curves.

I think a custom rewind would be the solution with a better v/r, that should put you at ease with the stator issue. Than you can spend the rest of the money on some fun parts, but I think its worth keeping just because CR are amazing machines and they are not anything like what most people have.

I can tell you from experience, that Japanese bikes are amazing and just great, but they are also plagued with problems. I had a 07 ZX10R in which the stator and alternator went out at just 9k miles. This was a big problem for me because I'm not mechanically inclined so I had to pay to replace it, and it cost me a good sum of money.

I fear the Stator issue as well for my CR but from what people post there are solutions out there. So I would say keep the CR and let it make you happy!

I suggest you trade your rare CR for a run of the mill Asian bike. That way you can always be sad and remember the time when you had a super cool motorcycle Designed and Built in America by Americans.

Its an 09. Its not if the stator will fail but when.

If under warranty keep it and when it died insist on the 08 repair. Then your worry free.

If its not then flog it for a bike that will get you to the end of the ride.

There currently is NO fix for the stator other then swapping to an 08 model stator

Or having the stator rewound by someone who uses the appropriate wiring/insulation/epoxy for the temperatures...

The stator was replaced under warranty and just fried another voltage regulator. My warranty ran out in April (at just over 6k miles) and good ole HD takes the "it's not my problem any more attitude". So far, the custom rewind doesn't seem to be the answer either based on some of the threads here. I just don't understand why the "Motor Company" won't provide a fix for our bikes. Designed and Built in America by Americans would sound alot better if there was a way to keep American owners on the road instead of in the shop.

This is my second Buell, with my first being a 2000 X1. I'd like to say I have brand loyalty, but who are we loyal to know? Buell or HD?

"Or having the stator rewound by someone who uses the appropriate wiring/insulation/epoxy for the temperatures..."

That's been disproven. Only fix that lasts is 08 stator

Well gentleman, looks like I found the answer to my charging system worries. Sold the CR today. Hope the new owner enjoys it, he damn near stole it from me. And now the search begins for my next ride.

If I had the cash to buy a new bike it would be a Speed Triple or Street Triple from Triumph. Love my CR though, it's not going anywhere.

Ah, people have had the Custom Rewinds fail? I wasn't aware of that... interesting.

ONE rewind has failed, there is a thread about it. It was an early one and it failed (by admission from Custom Rewind) due to poor wire gauge selection.

They are fixing it for the guy for free.

Maybe I am the only person left of the old group...from the time when a new bike was viewed and pondered upon about what would need to be done to make it reliable and handle, etc....back in the old days a lot of parts ended up on a shelf after being replaced with reliable/functional ones...but then again I am a mechanic and a tinkerer and former racer/builder.

To me the stator prob is an inexpensive, possible fun weekend fix...the cost is relatively low for a rewind...I spend much more than that on farkles and routine maintenance....

Face it, 1125's are exotics...as such you have to appreciate one for what it is. Want stone reliable?? Go buy a Honda Cub.

Now there's an idea, a Honda Cub with a CR headlight and Barker exhaust! I'm grabbing a 1st gen Z1000 tomorrow. Gonna miss being a Bueller.

I think you will like the Z, a little less grunt than the CR, but still plenty of character and fun factor...Best of luck and enjoy.
