Gavin: Here's some pix with measurements of the Marzocchi decals on my '90. I'll PM you with the details on the letters instead of taking up space here...unless it would be of value to do so here for someone else. Here's the decal that's on both forks, with the overall dimension shown. The digital measurement is taken to the outside of the lettering. Don't pay attention to any possible gaps you might notice, as I measured and then tried to hold steady enough for a picture...in most cases unsuccessfully!
Here's the M1R decal dimension and picture.
Note in the picture below that the entire decal has a fine line around the perimeter in red, and each individual letter also has a fine line around it in black.
They turned out a little fuzzier than they looked on the little camera screen, so if you need better pictures, I can easily re-do what you might need...with a tripod next time! Let me know. |

Yours is a second bike I have seen with the M1R sticker on the front of the leg... the other one was a black 1990 RS1200 tested in a UK magazine. Typical of an Italian factory to send over any and all combinations of decals!! |

Hank. I think I will leave the side stand in chrome.... to me it looks "right" on the bike and is a much more practical finish for a kickstand. I will also be leaving all your stainless fastenings on for the same reason. Regards Gavin |

Dennis... just looking at your picture above of the gear change side of your engine... whats up with the angles of the foot lever upright and the lever arm on the case?? I would have thought they should have been basically at near the same angle to each other? regards Gavin |

I also noticed that. The engineer in me says the setup I have will require less foot motion per shift (quicker shift) due to the angle of the foot lever. But I'm guessing. My foot lever doesn't resemble the drawing in the parts manual...even for an RSS due to the relief cut into the arms. My records don't show the lever was changed, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen during the RS-to-RSS conversion effort. Dennis |

Here is a detail picture of a stock, brand new RS shifter. I am pretty sure this is a 4 speed BUT I could be wrong about that.

I think that might be a 5 speed... it has the two screws holding on the little covers on and the 90 degree shifter arm that came in on the 5 speed. But I am not an expert! Regards Gavin |

Good catch, Gavin! I was checking my pix of my stable and you appear to be spot on. My 4 speed doesn't have the screws on the covers, while my 5 speeds do. A trip to the Bat Cave may be in order to confirm, but I'm inclined to agree that Dave's picture is of a 5 speed. ...But is the question whether the shifter arm is made of steel or aluminum? |

Just a small update on the RS... I now have the new correct shape inspection covers for the primary, going to send them off to have the chrome striped. Yesterday I got a set of S2 hard bags with narrow lids that I intend to fit to the RS.... somehow,... to that end I have ordered new smaller indicators for the rear that will fit the cutaway in the bags. I ordered some new ones for the front at the same time that are the same style and size lense but shorter stork... as they seem to stick out a LONG way! I will box up the orginals and keep them. Gavin: I was looking at pictures from some magazines and posts and I noticed something. Maybe you have, too. Your RS uses 3 fasteners on the right lower side panel at the rear. I noticed a couple of other picture of an RS (no RSSs) with 3 in the publications, but most have only 2. I need to get to the Bat Cave to check mine. I wonder what dictated which had two, or maybe all the pictures of bike(s) with three were of the same bike...yours? Maybe early production models? FYI: I have the following magazines that have reviewed the various years of the RS/RSS for scanning/sharing purposes: Motorcyclist, August '89 (RS) Cycle, February '89 (RS) Cycle World, August '90 (RS) Motorcyclist, January '91 (RS) Motorcyclist, March '92 (RSS) Cycle World, August '92 (RSS) ...and for what it's worth, all pictures in the magazines have the pegs with the polished tips on them on the RS. None that I've noticed are all rubber. I'll be having more time to start playing with mine shortly and will undoubtedly have enough ignorance to keep this thread lively once I get into things, but the topic may vary from RS to RSS...and back! Also: Post pix of the bags mounted!! |

Time to get this back to the top. Question #1: I've acquired an NOS tach for my RSS. The parts books says it should be P/N 67111-85, the same as what I allegedly received. But I noticed the red line on this NOS unit is 5200, VS the 6200 red line on the tach on my '92. What is the proper unit? Question #2: I just noticed my RSS has a slightly bent handlebar. It has the shorter swan bars on it. My '92 RS has the tall bars, while my '90 has the shorter bar that came with it. The parts book says the tall bars are supposed on "5 speed only". The other option (I assume short bars) show as being used on both the RS and RSS, so that isn't helping. Which bars are "correct" and will S2 bars work if I need to hunt replacements? (P/N's from RS-S2 changed, so I can't cross-reference them.) Can anybody shed light on either question? Thanks! |

5200 RPM redline tachs are for big twins. 6200 RPM tachs are for Sportsters. The 5200 would be incorrect. The tachs are otherwise identical provided they are the same year. |

Since this has turned into an RS1200 owners discussion thread, and an excellent one at that, I'd thought I'd pop in here and introduce myself. I'm a new owner of a '92 RS1200, #64, formerly Loki's bike. This one came from the factory with the RSS oil cooler and dash, and was the 1992 Daytona show bike, according to the build sheets. Supposedly, the first owner had the dealer add SE cams, but there's no documentation for this. The bike is definitely quick, though, so I wouldn't be surprised if it did have some engine mods done at some point. The original air cleaner is no longer there. Loki fabricated one, but I'd like to put the stock one back on. The problem is, no one seems to know if it was the stock Sportster, or the SE version! I'm keeping an eye out for the SE 29041-88B part as it's discontinued. This kit doesn't come with the chrome cover, so I'll be sourcing one of those. And, of course, I'll need the infamous #15a carb support. If anyone happens to have any of these parts, I'd be happy to take them off your hands. I have yet to take any of my own pictures of the bike, but here is one taken recently by Loki. -steve

I don't know much about these early tube frame bikes but, I saw this on ebay some time back. Not sure if this is all original. Thought it was cool and saved the pics. Dont know if this helps or not.
