At low RPMs, my 1125r begins to make a lot of "clanking" type sounds, almost like someone is taking a hammer to the pistons. Keeping the RPMs above 3500 seems to cure the noise. Does anyone know what causes the noise? | ||

Could be loose Stator-Rotor nut. Have it checked immediately. | ||

Could be gear clatter, too. These bikes like a little higher RPM as a general rule, so try keeping the revs up a bit. | ||

Took it in today and the mechanic took it for a spin. Just as Jdugger suggested, he said it's gear clatter as the engine likes to be above 3000 rpm. In a city with so much traffic, keeping the rpms above 3000 means I'll be traveling about 15 mph faster than anyone else on the road.... | ||

Captjoe - why? 3000rpms on this bike isnt flying or anything, if youre doing 15 faster than everyone else its because you want to, not cause the bike cant go that slow | ||

Captjoe - I agree, there is no slow cruise on these things. You can do it to some degree with an Erik Buell Racing ECM but they still don't really like it. Rather than trying to do a parade cruise I start, go to neutral and coast a lot in traffic. Riding an 1125 in traffic is like having a race horse pull a wagon, not a good match. | ||

Great analogy Danny. Yea, these bikes are geared really tall and aren't ideal for slow-speed riding at all. | ||

What gear are you in when you are getting this clanking? Mine will only do it in 5th/6th at around 2500 RPM, not 3k, and it is good down to idle in the lower gears. | ||

check your oil, mine was making noise like there were rocks tumbling around, come to find out it was half a quart low, added oil, the noise is gone | ||

captjoe check your sump plug to see if there is metal shavings in the engine.. mine was making a slight noise at low rpm as well. turned out it was the balancer gear chewed out | ||

My bike sometimes sounds like this, Start the bike from cold and it will sound fine but after about half a mile it will sound like it has a loose cam chain or chronic piston slap, the noise will then get less as the bike warms up, only does this about half the times I start it from sitting overnight. Any thoughts or ideas most welcome. Steve. | ||

at least take your bike to your local dealership and let tehm take a listen! mecahnical 'clakity-clack' noises that develop are never good sounds. if you bought at the fire-sale you still should be under the manufacturers 2-year, unlimited mileage warranty. how much would a new motor cost out of pocket? | ||

Pull the sump plate with the screen at the very bottom of the motor too. If you have the stock muffler you'll have to pull that to get to it. That'll hold any evidence of damage. My motor sounds clanky when cold but after a couple of miles it's quiet(er). My sump screen was perfectly clean after the first 5000 miles (first time I checked it). | ||

mine does it too right about the time i get to my first stoplight like clockwork. runs buttery smooth when fully warmed up. i never start riding till ct hits the 150 mark either | ||

Replace the lower cam chain guides with the updated 2010 model year parts. They were redesigned with a lip to collect more oil for additional lubrication to the cam chain. They cost about $8 ea.; need to pull the stator rotor and the clutch assy. to get to them. This will quiet down the rattling noise you hear after cold start, and until warmed up, like Stimbrell describes. Will not cure clattering noise Froggy & OP describes when lugging engine while in motion, two different things. Not good to lug the engine that low in the higher gears - I would try to avoid doing that. (Message edited by Lampo on June 13, 2011) | ||

Many thanks for all the help, I will make sure the dealer has a record about this just in case but it sounds like it could be normal. I will be pulling the exhaust for a clean up and fresh coat of paint soon so will check the sump plate then and if all is well I will leave it until the 12,400 mile service and replace the lower cam chain guides. Froggy, it happens consistently in any gear, except 1st, when the rpms drop below 3000rpm. Pretty much sounds like metal slamming against metal. | ||

Capt, It sounds like metal slamming against metal because that's exactly what's happening. Straight cut gears sure shift nice, but they make a ton of racket when they are loose because they are under a light load. | ||

My problem here in the city is that there doesn't seem to be a good gear to cruise around at 35mph. 3rd doesn't rev high enough and the clanking starts. 2nd revs just high enough that when I look down I notice I'm now doing 45mph and there's a cop with no dignity hiding behind a tree with a radar gun pointed at me. In the short term, I get sent on my way with a yellow paper in my pocket. In the long term, I wonder what all those constant radar beams are doing to my chest! | ||

Radar is way more dangerous to your wallet than your health. In my opinion, this bike just sucks in town. You need a canyon road or a race track. Anything else is just stator trouble, burned legs and sore wrists. | ||

Second gear=32mph=tad over 3k Almost all radar will give you a break when riding out in second. Most LEO's understand our dilemma. | ||

Learn to hold the throttle steady. You should be in second....at least on a CR and that has lower gearing than an R. | ||

If Loretta ran like what y'all say is normal, I would have sold her years ago. She did run like that for 6 or 8 months in 2008(the maps/flashes kinda sukked), then I got Dave's tune. About the time I was debating paying more for an update, I got an early open intake/exhaust race ECM. Well spent 250. Loretta has K&N, Drummer, original battery & R/R, HID front, LED rear. I regularly idle in 1st or 2nd thru my neighborhood, at 9 or 11 mph. 3rd is crunchy so I don't go there, but I have no problem with School Zones. The right map is crucial to enjoying this bike, IMO. Just shy of 27k and loving every mile, hills or commuting. Z | ||

I was having the same sound after a track day. Took it in and as Rodrob stated, it was the stator nut. | ||
