It's certainly "The Issue" with these bikes. At least we have good company. The RSVR is well known to toast stators, too, among other bikes in history. Anyone remember the Nighthawk 650? It wouldn't even charge the battery at operating RPMs below about 2600. Can you imagine the forum traffic TODAY if that were the case? Thread: My Battery Died! So, I'm riding around, and all of the sudden my battery light came on and the bike died. I was able to push start it, but it dies if I'm not constantly on the gas. Reply 1: Keep the revs up. This bike doesn't charge below 2600 RPM. OP: What a piece of shit. Honda should recall of these bikes NOW. It's a safety issue. I should be able to ride the bike however I please and not have an issue. Reply 2: Well, I don't disagree, but I'm just telling you how to fix the bike by changing how you ride vs. putting money into it. The bike has the issue as you describe it, and there's not a lot you can do about it now. OP: I still say it's crap. What kind of permanent proper fix for this exists? Honda should replace my battery and charging system. Reply 3: The "keep the revs up" thing is BS. It's not true. I ride mine hard, and I still had the issue 3 times. My bike gets used for commuting and the occasional weekend ride. Reply 4: There's a place you can get the stator rewound to higher output. It's about $200. OP: $200! I paid $8k for this bike, it should just work. Honda makes •••••• bikes. I'll never buy another one. Reply 5: Or, you could just downshift. It's a little awkward riding around 5k all the time, I agree, but the redline is 11k, so it's not like you are damaging the motor. And, anyway, the carbs are jetted for mid-range power, so the bike runs a bit smoother there, anyway. Reply 6: I have to agree with you OP, Honda really screwed up. And, their suggested repair of keeping the bike on the tender or riding it harder is totally unacceptable on a modern motorcycle. OP: Keeping the revs up is ridiculous. I put this cannon of an exhaust on this bike because it's cool, and I live in the suburbs and ride to work in the early mornings. I can't be riding around at 3k much less 5k at 5am. Reply 7: You could go stock exhaust. You are probably running lean now, anyway, and you are going to cook your headers and peel the chrome on them. OP: Yea, but I wanted the extra 10hp and I love the sound. I slowed the idle down so at stoplights it sounds like an elephant trotting in the mud. It's so cool. ... etc... | ||
