my little brothers xb12 lightning is having problems over heating. i don't have an ecm spy, but i tried to pull the error codes by crossing the #1 and 2 pins. with the pins connected when the ignition is turned on the check engine light comes on for 4 seconds off for 1 and then blinks rapidly 10 times, pauses for a second, and blinks 10 times again. this cycle goes on till the bike is turned off. what am i doing wrong in checking the error codes? |

If the lamp flashes at a rate faster than normal, then you are observing the “Intermission” only, which means that no trouble codes are present. Is the fan operating properly? Do you have a multimeter to test the fan for open or short circuit? (Message edited by terrys1980 on June 09, 2011) |

Has the engine light been on? Sounds like no codes to me. Why do you say its overheating? It is air cooled so it either needs more air or has a severe lean afr. If the cooling fan is functioning correctly check for vacuum leaks at intake manifold. |

my brother was the one who said it was overheating. it shut down on him while idling at a stoplight, sitting still in traffic. he had to push it off the road and after about 10 min it started up again. when he got it to the shop where i work the check engine light was lit up solid, no flashing. overheating sounds right, but i'm not sure, and the check engine light flashes very fast when checking for codes. i had an xb a couple years back and never had issues like that in traffic. oh fan was on when he pulled up. havent checked to see if it comes back on yet. |

So it died and wouldn't restart? Sounds to me like a fuel delivery problem check the fuel pressure the pump might be on its way out. |

That is not overheating. If it was overheating, the bike would intentionally missfire the rear cylinder on every other fire. It would be noticeable clear as day, and the check engine light would be flashing during this time. What year is this bike? |

ok so i took the bike for about a 30 mile ride. engine light didn't come on when i turned the key on, never a hickup, not a glitch. say screw it and call my brother to come pick up his bike. he gets on the bike and is less than a block away before the engine light comes on while he's riding. i got no clue, i'm just going to tell him to ride it till it just stops running all together |
