Spedo quit working.... all wires intact and tight...... light and ODO come on........ speed sensor puts out voltage.....(??not sure if its the right voltage, but its something) pluged in a VDSTS and it didnt show spedo working either........ Book trouble shooting guide is USELESS unless you happen to have HD spedo test unit! im unwilling to spend money shot gunning parts till it works. any ideas on testing the sensor and the spedo head to see which is FUBAR? |

What bike we talking about? I don't think there is a way of testing the sensor. I recently had speedo problems myself. I went through 4 speed sensors before I found out what was causing them to blow. I was getting interference from my coil on the pick-up line which was backfeeding into the sensor. I separated the speed sensor line from the harness and moved it to the other side of the frame and shielded it. Works perfect now. If you need a speedo let me know. I have one I'll give you if you if you pay for shipping, or if you live near Chicago you can pick it it. |

Spaced on the opening. Bald-Blond-moment I have a 2000 X1. Coming to Chicago to pick up the spedo is a great idea. I would love to ride from Alaska to illinois! Well ride and a ferry trip because I'm on an island. Damn that sounds good. I'll take you up on the offer on the spedo! Thanks a million! Get ahold of me via email. psy_mech011@yahoo.com |

Ltbuell, your next in line if Psykick doesn't need the speedo. |

It's likely the sensor - they fail often (at least the older ones) and aren't expensive. Does it work at all? When mine went bad it would read up to about 10-15mph, faster than that it would just fall back to 0 and stay there. |

it flat out failed, twice actually. last time it just decided to start working again. intermittant gremlins SUCK. just now found in the book where it says that "if the speedometer is inoperative, but backlighting and odometer work, the speedometer sensor may not be working" thats helpful, but the odo isnt working. do they meen the odo comes on or is still ticking off the millage? i put my multimeter on the spedo sensor, ran the bike up in gear and got voltage out of the sensor. But i have no idea if its the correct voltage. id like to install the spedo head for troublshooting and if thats not it i can send it down the line to the next needy Bueller. my Psykick senses are pointing to the sensor but im to cheep to order one without proof. |

Odo can't work (tick off miles) without a good signal from the speedo sensor. |

The sensor is a magnet switch. It senses a "pinwheel" on a shaft in the tranny. They can outright fail as in dead component or can just be covered with metal shavings from the tranny. You can remove the sensor pretty easily. Once you have it out, you will see if it's covered in crap or not. Perhaps you'll luck out |
