I've been reading and searching the forums and have found similar problems to what I'm having but not exactly. It sounds like the throttle bodies might need to be replaced? I'm not mechanic by any means but I have been trying to at least narrow down the problem to help whoever fixes it and it seems to be related to either the battery/charging system or heat. When I start my bike in the morning it runs great for about 10 minutes and then the throttle starts to not work. The throttle does not respond (as I've read in numerous other posts) until I'm 1/4-1/2 a turn in and then it catches and surges. It's very dangerous going around turns. The reason why it seems to me to be heat or battery is that it only happens during stop and go and will pretty much fix itself when on the highway (this would increase the rpm and also make the engine temp go down). Also, it could be my imagination, but it seems as if once the engine reaches 183 degrees the problem starts to occur. Any thoughts? Anyone who's had any experience replacing the throttle bodies or with a similar problem have any thoughts or ideas? Thanks! | ||

Anything throttle related check the throttle cables, when you grab the throttle and pull it open, does it snap back, if you have cable binding it will cause problems. Next pull of the airbox cover and airbox and look at the butterflies and throttle bodies while playing with the throttle. | ||

I had a similar problem with my throttle. I have a 2008 bought it last March. It was fine until it got warmer here and last Memorial Day weekend it started acting up. I took it to my dealer and they found the problem in the throttle body butterfly valves. They started to expand and stick until enough throttle pull would open them all of a sudden at like 1/2 throttle. It would go away on a cold motor but return after it warmed after 15 minutes of riding. They replaced the throttle bodies with updated ones under warranty. | ||

Is the throttle sticking at all? If the bike is off, and you open it half way, does it SNAP back to closed? | ||

It could also be a bad TPS. Enter diagnostic mode and verify that the TPS reading indicates smoothly when hot. If I were troubleshooting this, I'd probably pull the airbox cover and the inner airbox, leave the air filter on, let the engine idle until it's good and hot, then shut down, remove the air filter, enter diagnostic mode, watch the TPS readings and the throttle butterflies, and figure out what's going on - if it happens when it's hot, letting it idle for 10-15 minutes should get it good and hot. | ||

If the cable routing is wrong, when the wheel is turned a throttle can bind/stick. With a cold engine that is off, test the range of motion; 1. locked left throttle open and released, 2. 1/2 left throttle open and released, 3. locked right throttle open and released, 4. 1/2 right throttle open and released. Did it stick on any of the four tests? | ||

Thanks for all of the advice. I tried the throttle in all the positions and it didn't stick at all. It also springs back when I give it throttle. Pgh_Biker's situation sounds to me like what's happening. When I give it gas it doesn't do anything and then all of a sudden it pops as if the butterfly valve opens suddenly and surges forward. It seems to only happen when in stop and go traffic making the engine get hot (the butterflies swell from heat?). Also it is a 2008 like yours. I guess I'll take it to the dealers. I'm not very confident in them so hopefully this will give them guidance. |
