Say, can anyone explain why the XB fan runs when the bike is off? I don't imagine that this behavior is an oversight on the engineer's part. The motor is not going to get any hotter when it is off. Most every other motorcycle in the world does not have components that stay on when the key is turned off. People want to shoot my XB because the fan is so annoying, when I stop and park next to them. I never flip my helmet visor up until, I am out of sight of the bike, and the fan has stopped. The XB fan keeps running because the fan is not connected to the ignition switch. The fan has its own switch, located under the seat held on by British Standard bolts then have to remove plastic under tray with metric allen, then find the switch cover with American thread torx, then use a pair of vice grips to finally, turn the fan switch off...... To then start the bike again, to the above in reverse, sprinkle holy water and pray you did not fry the electrical system or accidently unbolt the stator. i think they are sposda do that to keep the oil that is left on the top of the motor from burning/boiling. it makes sense to me ... and i kinda like it. if people ask, i tell them it's electric "you gotta feel it. it's electric! boogy-woogy, woogy-woogy" | ||

Yes, it's supposed to do that to cool the cylinders when you're stopped or when you shut it off. I like seeing the puzzled faces when I shut it off and the fan kicks on. There are a few things you can do to insulate the seat from the heat. Check the knowledge vault. I have been known to tell people it's the turbine winding down. Or since I'm an IT guy, I say it's still processing or it's saving my settings. | ||

depending on how new your xb is(if you have ddfi 3)the most current ecm(stock calibration) reflash lets the fan run only when rpms are over 1000 and when the bike is extremely hot with the engine on. its also the current flash on any of the erik buell racing race ecm's available. | ||

I have an 08 with the ddfi 3 and the fan does run when I shut it down. I just figure it is better than boiling the rear cylinder. And its A LOT quieter than when its running so no one has ever complained. | ||

Tbolt, it's cooling the rear head, keeping the oil from just sitting in there and cooking away. I just call it my After-Cooler. It's really cool when a bunch of us pull up rumbling in, then we all shut off our bikes and they all sit with harmonizing fans! | ||

The fan runs for a reason. Deal with it. Me, I feel robbed when I turn off my 98 S1W and don't get to hear the sound of the fan running! | ||

I like the fan, it tells me that it's cooling the rear cylinder so my engine doesn't melt down.  Ourdee, no need for a kill switch, just turn the key on and then off again and the fan will stop. | ||

Glitch is right, the oil isn't being pumped when the engine is off and there is also no air flow over it to keep it cool. The oil will just sit there and boil and it is bad for the engine. I have read that adding the right side air scoop will keep the engine cooler while riding and will reduce the time that the fan is on. | ||

Some Buellers say... "Loud Fans Save Lives..." I've even seen a T-Shirt before. If anyone gives you guff about it just tell them that it cools the engine a bit more to prevent oil from cooking when the engine has stopped. It will go off on its own. | ||

The new flash does a much better job of managing heat while the bike is running. It WILL run when turned off it it meets certain parameters. In the ecm there are many paramaters that are programmable regarding the key-off fan programming, including: - Fan Key-Off Run Delay - Fan Key-Off Duty Cycle - Fan Key-Off On Temperature - Fan Key-Off Off Temperature - Fan Key-Off Maximum Duration - Fan Key-Off Minimum Battery Voltage The conditions must meet the above set parameter to run/not run the fan. Keep in mind it's not like the fan just always runs- if it's cool out and the engine is cool enough the fan won't run when you shut the bike off. | ||

Who cares? The bike is different than 'most any other motorcycle in the world.'. If you really don't want it to run in a certain situation you can get it to shut off by turning the bike off with killswitch, turning off the ignition, then turning the ignition back on and then off... Or something like that... But I'd let it run... Engineers did it for a reason. | ||

Google the term "heat soak", thats what they call the phenomena that causes engine temps to go up after shut-off. I think thats why Buell engineered the fan to run after shut-off (the oil is no longer circulating and cooling components). I guess Buell programmed it out after all the complaints like the one above. | ||

I'm not here to debate heat soak, but the temp does not go up after the engine is off. Heat soak is simply heat transfer to other metal parts of the engine e.g. the intake. | ||

@Terrys1980 Sorry, that's what I meant to say, but I didn't say it as well as you. Heat transfer means temps go up ... but in in other areas like the intake, engine oil, etc. because they are no longer being actively cooled. I am just hypothesizing, but I think the Buell engineers don't like that for some reason. That's why I don't mind cooling fan running after I shut down the bike. | ||

I just replaced a damaged fan on my '05. From page 4-106 fan specs: key on: fan on at 428f fan off at 356f key off: fan on at 338f fan off at 302f When hot,thew fan keeps air flowing accross the heads | ||

I believe the last flash does away with that because my 08 used to run forever now it runs while riding and cuts off at 15 mph | ||

I love the sound of a bunch of XB fans humming away on shutdown - musical motorcycle version of the flight of the humming bees. Last time I heard fans in full flight was when we stopped at nittanyXT's place on last year's Res Ride - gorgeous sound! I just don't get the aversion to shutdown fans that drove the fan reprogramming - buells are motorcycles and supposed to be seen and heard, right? | ||
