Pop off the seat, the ECM is a big black box directly under where you would sit. If it is a Race ECM, it would say "RACE USE ONLY" in big letters engraved in it. If not, it is the stock ECM, and I recommend you get one from Erik Buell Racing when their shop reopens in a few days.
Also, that pulsing you describe is probably from the stock ECM, they run very lean from the factory to pass EPA testing, but the Race ECM cures that. (Message edited by Froggy on June 03, 2011) |

Thanks Froggy I have the stock ecm. I am thinking of returning to the stock can,Not into the noise. But I like the stainless..? Notice the stock can has flapper valve is this easy to rehook? I need to find a service manual Thanks. |

The stock can while quiet, gives some good performance thanks to the valve in it that opens when you go wide open, allowing a strong torque curve when you are cruising or beating the snot out of it. The big downside to the stock can is that it rusts very easy and very fast. It will look like crap in a few thousand miles of use especially if it sees any rain or road salt. The valve is easy to hook back up, assuming the previous owner left the cable and actuator in place. If you take off the plastic airbox cover, you will see sitting on top of the airbox should be the actuator and the cable running down into the frame area. Unfortunately, to get a manual you will need to order one from American Sport Bike or your favorite dealer. There are 3 manuals, one is the service which covers how to change tires and such, the parts book gives you exploded diagrams which make reassembly a breeze in addition to part numbers of anything you might need, then there is the electrical manual which has all the wiring diagrams and troubleshooting info you will need in the event the bike acts up. All 3 will run you around $120, but it is well worth it, the books are well made and are loaded with invaluable info. Erik Buell Racing offers a Race ECM intended for the stock exhaust, it works great to get past the EPA issues, and it changes the fan programming so it is less likely to come on after you shut the bike off. It is well worth the $250, and is a night and day difference. |

Thanks for all the info cable is still in place for stock can.Does the pulsing hurt anything? runs awesome at higher rpms. Fan runs 45 -up to 90 sec on shut down? |

It doesn't hurt, but once it is properly tuned or has a Race ECM, you will see more power, smoother acceleration, and better fuel economy due to it running better. You would wonder how you rode it before! Yes with your current fan programming it will run for a few minutes on shut down depending on engine temperature. The Race ECM has different programming, and as result will run it a bit more while you are riding but less when you are stopped. |
