Ok, A certain nationwide cycle store gouged my XB's wheels at last tire chain, they've agreed to powdercoat them for me. Right now the front is black and the rear is amber. I really like the black so I think I'll go both black but wanted to see what everyone else might have done. And what do I need to be careful of with the powdercoat?

If done right you dont have to careful about much, just dont clean them with harsh chemicals (soap, water and some detail spray is all you need). Who picks the shop to do them? Speak with the shop and find out what process they will use as a half ass prep will result in powder failure later on. PM if you have any more questions.

One thing to be sure of during the prep:

ALL XB wheels are manufactured with a polished lip (like the early, non-powder coated wheels that were as-cast in the main parts and polished on the lip). That's why the PC chips off so easily on the lips.

BE SURE that the lips are well sand-blasted in order to give them a texture for the PC to adhere well to and you'll be a happy camper.

Keep your bearing surfaces clear of powder, as well as the rotor and sprocket mating surfaces (see Hammer's photos). If it were me, I'd leave the old bearing in the wheels during the powder process, pull then after and install new bearings.

I'd leave the old bearing in the wheels during the powder process

Cant do that, the grease will seep out and ruin the finnish.

I just did on a set.... I guess theen it was a good thing that Buell bearings generally don't have enough grease! : p

however...my powder oater does a ton of motorcycle and automotive stuff....he said he always leaves them in. So, YMMV!

Well, Cycle Gear is paying, so I'll prep em however they say and they can redo them if the arent right! Thanks for the advise though. Any ideas on Color? There are so many "Gloss" Shades of black, I LOVE the Amber but they get dirty so fast.

Well that's an opinion question! But for me....next tire change my rims will be going with a textured black PC:

That's on a buddy's bike, I took them, his entire tailsection, his primary cover and his luggage racks in to my guy to have the same finish applied.

I currently have standard black City-X wheels on my Uly, the texture sure looks tough!
