im sure this has been discussed before but i couldnt find it on here. i have a slight ticking coming from the engine that gets faster with the rpms. its not a tap just a slight tick. and what is the normal running temp for the engine. was just curious. sry for the dumb questions. |

On the tick I would suggest looking at the exhaust for a leak somewhere. |

Not a dumb question, the noise of the air cooled Buell is often compared to that of a running blender half full of nickels. |

The X1 engine is a "box of rocks" as far as noise is concerned. It could be anything! IMHO the best thing to do is just "monitor" it & if it doesn't change/get worse just ride with it. I work with the maxim that., "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" My last serious bike was a VFR 750 & it didn't sound anything like the mill in my X1 Buell. Chris C |

alright i just put a d&d on it and did remapping and it sounds the same as when stock. so i guess i should just let the pipe block it out. |

i also adjusted my belt yesterday to sloppy loose but not to loose and now when riding in 95 degree weather today its back to almost to tight is that normal. |

Did you set the axle adjusters when you adjusted the belt? The X1 likes to run "sloppy loose". Too tight & you damage the internals (possibly). Just monitor everything for a couple of days. The bike will let you know if there is something wrong. Changing anything on an X1 is always interesting! Chris C |

The belt shrinks with heat. Touching the swing arm with no weight on the bike.
If you disconnect the shock and lower the bike till the front sprocket the Iso bolt and the rear sprocket are in a straight line and adjust it to have about 1/2-3/4" deflection with light finger pressure you will end up about the same as the pic above. (Message edited by Jramsey on May 31, 2011) |

Yep, quite normal from deceleration. |

Can I ask what sort of damage can be caused from too much tension on the belt and if so is there a typical type of damage caused? |

I think the damage can come from the fact that as you increase the load you will change all the angles enough to tighten the belt, and then when you hit a big bump it can stress the transmission output seal, leading to leakage. Or in extreme cases break the belt. |

"Can I ask what sort of damage can be caused from too much tension on the belt and if so is there a typical type of damage caused?" You can blow your main trans. bearing and/or your rear wheel bearings. Ask me how I know. |

Steve Ask me how I know you said. OK :- Did the main trans.bearing make any noise before it went ? Any symptoms ? Just found out I have had my belt too tight and that might account for noises I've been hearing. I've been nursing it around for a while waiting for something to pop.lol. |

Regarding engine noise... It may be something as simple as an oil change. You may have an hydraulic lifter that is getting a little dirty, causing the ticking. Regarding the belt... Very easy to get the wrong deflection (tension) on the belt. I made a slight adjustment yesterday, put my 108# son on with me and shazam, too tight. If you have a marginal shock, meaning a leak in the shock, and you haven't tightened your pre-load, your belt will be getting extremely stressed during a ride. |

I just did an oil change and the noise is the same. I think its just normal noise. Its not super loud you cant hear it when your riding due to exhaust |

Mine makes all kinds of noise. And it is normal to be able to hear the valves making noise. It still freaks me out. |

Regarding the engine noise and you probably know this already, I use the long screw driver technique to isolate the source. In my X1, there are two totally different set of noises coming from the motor/primary depending on which side of the bike I'm looking at. And they are equally terrifying... With the stock muffler the noises are simply horrific, specially if you're used to inline-4 motors. |

"Steve Ask me how I know you said." Allen, Last year, a week before Homecoming my Main Trans bearing let go. It was the bearing right behind the Front pulley. There were no symptoms. I did get it fixed in time for Homecoming. On the way riding out, Andy Nelson looked at it (the belt) and noticed it was to tight. We adjusted it on the road. "You want this super loose" I was told by several Badwebbers. PK Forbes has some good info on this as well of others here. Was told by Erik Buell at homecoming "If the belt is to tight, The bearings (Trans or Rear wheel) will eventually fail" Torque everything to specs. Even the rear axel, as I've learned the hard way (Don't ask me how I know). |

Yeah, monitor that noise. My buddy and I were leaving the Dragon when I leaned down and said, "I think I'm making some funny noises". Being nothing I could do at the time and it was still running O.K. off we went. Several miles later this...
Notice the squared off bearings and the nice new Coke bottle crank pin. Sometimes noise is just noise, sometimes it's splitting the cases. |

Another "noise" comes from the intake. I changed my original 99 M2 over from the stock breadbox, to the race CF aircleaner. Damn intake sounded like an engine knock. Freaked me out...till I put the stock airbox back on (there's a reason they used a Helmholz chamber in the stock box!) and rode it again. Now...I just ignore the noise because I know it's just intake pulse. |

Another "noise" comes from the intake. +1 on that, it's even worse when you put a Mikuni on. |
