Anyone watching this tonite? I noticed how Scott Russell and the other commentator stopped talking at 6th place when they were going over results--Geoff May on the only American Superbike was 7th. They then skipped down to Beach who ended up 15th. AMAzing...

Well, to be fair, May started in 11th and only due to the unfortunate wrecks of some of the front runners was May able to move up to 7th. But, that being said, I think that it is amazing that May is able to maintain his position race after race on a bike that is so far down on HP compare to everyone else on the course. I don't know how he does it every time. It speaks volumes for his abilities as a premier racer. I can't wait to see him on an 1190!!!

Yeah I noticed that myself. I was waiting to see what accolades they might give Geoff for being the ONLY American bike but no they skip down to 15th position to mention the only kawi that made it to the finish. I think the commentators are being bought buy the big 4's from Japan

Though Geoff did benefit from crashes and mechanicals, did he not pass Ben Bostrom, fair and square? Scott Russell was comical, as usual, especially during the XR1200 race, where he made it sound like he was proud to have been part of the VR1000 effort.

I don't. I think when the 1190 is a front-runner it will get plenty of attention.

Until then, it's a one-of-a-kind rather mid-pack. Not terribly interesting coverage...

Ya think?

>>>Though Geoff did benefit

As did everyone else who didn't crash.

>>>proud to have been part of the VR1000 effort

Yeah . . not just anybody can change a rear tire in 47 minutes. I knew (and I was smart enought to get the heck out of the picture) that it was a "bad sign" when the film crew from "Harelywood" was filming the VR1000 pit stop and had to change tape cassettes when the tape ran out.

Racing . . . . ya gotta love it!~

All good thoughts. Watching the race here yesterday I was hoping for all out rain and quite possibly Geoff would have podiumed. He is excellant in the wet. He was very consistant, as always, and as is always said, "in order to finish first you have to first finish. At least three or four "good riders" did not. Conditions were NOT real good. Kudos to him for his effort. Now lets give him what he wants, our new 1190RS! Coming soon to a track near you. Its going to be an exciting year.

Thank you. I was trying to find an eloquent way of phrasing that.

Not crashing has to be part of the plan.

Didn't mean to take anything away from Geoff, on the contrary, I 'watched' the race on live timing, and it looked by the splits that he was doing his usual best. Crashing and mechanical problems are part of racing, so is benefiting from the misfortunes of others. I was trying to point out that though Geoff (like everyone else who didn't crash) moved up by attrition, he also made a solid pass on Ben Bostrom, possibly one of the better riders on one of the faster bikes on the circuit. I think Geoff showed he is one of the best riders in the series, to make another top 10 finish on the 1125.

I think the mention of Beach has less to do with Jap bike bias and more to do with him being the youngest guy (I thought I recall them saying that) on the grid and literally being run over by two bikes in a crash in the last race.
Just guessing though, since I haven't watched the Miller races yet. But I'm surprised he was able to ride. Heck, I was surprised they didn't have to scrap him off the pavement.

Actually Beach wasn't run over in the prior race, but he did do a great job of t-boning Chris Ulrich and putting him in the hospital with multiple fractures. He needs to slow down and learn how to control a superbike.

I wondered what happened to Ulrich. When did this accident happen?

a) he was run over twice in the same incident
b) there was no t-boning of any kind. Ulrich's brake lever was tapped and he went ass over tea kettle. Hard wreck.

I watched the SPEED channel coverage of the previous round at Infineon last night on our Motors Channel over here. A few things struck me about it.....

1. No mention of the Buell at all, even though it was clearly in shot a few times.

2. Where did they find that commentary team!! I couldn't watch more than a few laps without switching them off!

3. Are Spectators banned from attending AMA races?

Matt question #2 partially explains #3. NHRA drag racing is having the same kind of problem. The announcing crew is so bad that the spectator count on TV is down and yet nothing is done.

Matt,

Welcome to the lame world of SpeedTV's coverage of AMA road racing. The solution is simple, bring Jason Pridmore on as full time race color commentator and put Greg White in the prime announcers seat.

I think some of these guys are just stuck into the slot for no apparent good reason. Not sure about the guys in question, but I'll offer another case in point on "sports announcers": I am also a fan of professional cycling and use Craig Hummer as an example.

The first year he did TDF, it was obvious he had very little clue as to what he was talking about. Turns out, he's a competitive swimmer/lifeguard (at least he's an athlete). He also does commentary for Professional Bull Riders, America's Cup, mixed martial arts and the Olympics. I think these guys get a gig with the network, then go wherever they get told to go. IMO, the best announcers are the guys who live and breathe the sport they are calling - you can't fake this stuff, and the fans pick up on it pretty quickly. In Hummer's case, he did get much better after a season or two, but he's still no Liggett, Sherwin, or even Roll.

Yep. The few races Pridmore has color commentated on were some of the most insightful in that regard. Scott Russell has gotten a little better than his beginnings, but he still is horrible.

The guys in the booth should be replaced ASAP. I like the White-Pridmore suggestion.
