Well since the stator is bad and I have to take it apart anyway, should I do the XB9 primary swap while I have it all apart? I think I found all the parts, the sprocket already has the rotor on it if they're the same. It's not going to be that much more expensive. |

Hard for us to say yes or no for you. The only advantage of it is a lower first gear. How often are you riding in first? Are you doing a lot of off roading? If you answered no, then you probably are best staying stock and not sacrificing what would essentially be 5th gear. |

To clarify Froggy's post...ALL your gears will be lower. You'll have a "new" first gear, super low. Second will now be like your current first gear. Third like your current second. And so on. Imagine riding around in fourth gear all the time...and that being as tall as you can go. If you're good with that...go for it. If you're always looking for sixth gear, though...this is gonna take you the WRONG way. |

Yeah, I like the idea of the lower first for off road because it's geared a little high for that, but I do look for another gear sometimes on the highway. We need a wide ratio six speed. |

I did the conversion last year. The first thing I noticed was that it made the Uly a much better street bike. Unbelievable difference for city riding. Off the tarvy is a pleasure as I ride a lot of mountainous country. Virtually eliminated clutch feathering. The only possible reason I would ever go back to the stock gearing is if I wanted to consistently ride at over 85 mph. At 80 mph, I'm turning about 4,300 rpms. Absolutely the best mod I've made to my Uly, bar none. YMMV |

I agree with Itileman, it is awesome. if you enjoy pulling the front wheel its a blast. Much better around town and quicker acceleration. it will still pull 120mph+ plenty fast enough. if I take it easy on the freeway I can still get 45-47mpg. I would do it. |

t 80 mph, I'm turning about 4,300 rpms. THANK YOU. I've been trying to get an answer to that very question, but nobody seems to have a specific answer for me 80 is my bike's sweet spot, and for a 300 rpm difference I may try it (I'm 4k @ 80 now, with stock gearing). |

I recommend it too. It will run at about 4000 rpm at about 73 mph. |

I have a different reason for considering the swap. I want second gear to run 7000 rpm at 60 mph. |

Yes, by far the best mod I have done to my Uly. MUCH better driveability, I have noticed no decrease in fuel mileage, and the losing 5th comment is not entirely true- 4th gear is 16.6% steeper than 5th gear, and the 9 gearing is 11.9% steeper than the 12 gearing. For those wondering about RPMs- it's a simple math problem. You will be 11.9% higher RPMS at any given speed. So, Ratbuell, if you're currently at 4000 RPMs, you would be now be at 4476 RPMs. The bike will still do mid- 120s for top speed, PLENTY of speed for any open road! Remember, it's not like you're going to some crazy aftermarket ratios....You'll now have the same gearing as a stock 9 motor, so your topend will actually be higher than a 9 because of the extra RPMs of a 12. Yjsrule- if at all considering the mod, do it now since you'll have all the parts off! |

Given that the 12 motors seem to be susceptible to dramatically increased wear at higher RPM's, I elected not to do the swap on my 07 Uly, even though I would prefer the bike geared down a bit. If it were an 08 or later Uly with the better bottom end and better oiling system, I probably would have done it. FWIW. |

I did it to mine last year when the stator baked... I love it and would HIGHLY recommend it.... anybody heading to the WV Buell Rally this year is free to to take a test ride on mine. |

Yep, and I got a nice spreadsheet to show it 80MPH on XB12 gearing in 5th is 3979RPM 80MPH on XB9 gearing in 5th is 4446RPM 80MPH on XB12 in 4th gear will get you 4640RPM. A little higher than 5th on a 9, but it will give you a good feel for it and the droning of the bike on the highway.

I did two tanks on my XB12 with 4th gear instead of 5th, I noticed a significant decrease in fuel economy, and I religiously monitor and log my fuel economy. I can't see how increasing engine RPM won't hurt fuel economy unless your bike is poorly tuned. |

The gear and chain are the only extra parts I need as far as I can tell, correct? |

The only thing I can say is that it probably has to do with individual riding habits. I think it simply gets the bike into a better, smoother running RPM range where the motor is more efficient. That's my theory anyway My fuel economy is unchanged, and others have reported the same |

riding around in 4th isn't going to be the same... its more like 4.5 I'm still getting about 150 per tank before the fuell light comes on. I was getting about 175 per tank before the light came on... but it would be hard for me to judge. I've been in hammer it riding mode ever since I installed it along with my E.B.R. Race ECM. |

So how's the ebr ECM compare to the old race ECM? You had one in your bike before didn't you? |

its great! I've only had a cough or two since I installed it.... but I was trying to see if I could make it do it. I didn't give the bike a chance to warm up... just jumped on and took off on a cool morning. I think it hacked once |

Yjsrule, it's also recommended that you replace the rotor bolt since it takes a large amount of torque to tighten and will be stretched. I'll add my vote for best mod. |

ok... filled up today 9 Primary Erik Buell Racing Race ECM Race Pipe K&N Conti Motion Tyres 36/38 psi Koyo bearings front and rear 168 miles by 4.1 gallons = 40.98 miles per gallon and I was flogging it most of the time |

Depending on elevation and the flog factor I've gotten anywhere from 43 to 51 mpg. It depends on fuel also. I couldn't tell any difference in economy between the 9 and 12 gearing, they both changed with conditions. The thing I did notice is in the city and off pavement the 9 gearing seems near perfect. I really believe it should have come with this gearing considering it's purpose. |

IMHO, a six speed & another gallon of gas, Buell as we knew it would still be in biz. |

It's not they went out of business..they were doing just fine. HD just decided they didn't want to make them. 6-speed and more fuel would not have solved anything. |

I know asb sells a complete kit but the parts from an online hd dealer were $130 for the chain and gear and I was ordering a stator so just figured id get it all at once. |

I have a question, is there a different part number for the gear and or the chain for the 08/09 XB12XT? |

Yes they are different. I had the number the other day but I deleted it. You should be able to find it on here somewhere. |

There are times on a long trip I try for another gear that is not there...but most of my riding is local so I love the XB9 gearing. I got my kit from Al. Easier on clutch and me. I can still run fine at 9 over the speed limit and bike revs feel ok. Do I wish I had another gear sometimes on top. yep but not willing to trade the safety/versitility/acceleration/clutch savings. So Mark, how does the uly compare to the TT with the ECM and 9 primary? I rode my TT to work today and it definitely runs better than my uly. They're both all stock except the uly has a uni filter. |
