This may have been reported elsewhere but if not here is what I got from the Sportster Board: - Pete went down earlier in the week, - he broke his femur but is okay, - he had a rod installed in an Ashville, N.C. hospital, had ins. and got good care. - he trucked home 48 hours after surgery with a friend, who drove. - his friend dropped his Uly as well, after Pete dropped his, - Pete is now home in Canada. - Pete's Uly reportedly came through unscathed. - Pete is hurting, probably shouldn't have made the 15 hour drive home but felt a need to get back to work, - he is getting a lot of help and needs it. Best to you, Pete. (Message edited by buellerxt on May 16, 2011) (Message edited by buellerxt on May 16, 2011) |

Damn, I know firsthand how much "fun" a busted femur can be. Strongest bone in the human body...break that, and you weren't halfassing it! Heal well, my friend. LISTEN TO THE PT'S (assuming you'll have at least some physical therapy). And, since you're a Canuck...stock up on 222. (send me a bottle while you're at it, I'm about out ) Glad to hear he's OK. Any word on the friend? |

Pete, Sounds like a painful crash. My son crashed and broke his femur about 4 years ago and they bolted it together. A couple of years ago he had another operation and had all the hardware removed since it was bothering him. Anyways, those femur breaks can cut through the femoral artery and then it is just a matter of seconds and you're gone. To this day when I think about my son's wreck (I was there) I get a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. Heal quick so you can get back on the Buell. This is a good tip that will save a lot of pain if you break a limb. A few years back I T-Boned a car, flipped over it and landed on my back. I broke my upper right arm. The arm was not in plaster just a sling. After 3 months the bone was fine but the shoulder joint was frozen. This is what happens if you do not move a joint for a long time and I was not told of this problem. It took another month of very painful therapy to work the joint back to normal. What I have found out since is that small gentle movements of a joint will stop/ease this problem. I am not saying you should not trust the medics but mistakes are made and some things can not be fixed as easy as a bike can. Many things in the world are important but you need to start with the basics. Clean water and good health are a must. |

Thanks for all the well wishes. I've been through a lot the last couple of weeks but the light is at the end of the tunnel. I'm dissapointed that this happened because I had a great riding season planned. I have no one to blame but myself so I guess I've got to suck it up and deal with it. Here are a few nasty pics be warned A little swelling after the ride home

Hey Pete, I was really sorry to read of your misfortune but glad you're on the mend. Two years ago in April I went down on the Dragon but to this day I don't know why I went off the road. It happened regardless and I came away a little better than you with a broken collar bone and fractured ribs. Glad you're going to be ok. Take care and good luck. |

Holy cow!! I've busted bones sixteen times, but the femur isn't one. That looks like it has got to be more painful than anything I've ever been through. My heart goes out to you. Stay strong, believe me, it gets better every single day. |

That's a bad break, Pete. Did you have thigh padding/armor of any kind? Any idea how you hit your thigh? Glad to hear you can see some light. My wife had a similar break in a car accident two years ago and it heeled well. No problems what so ever. Best to you. |

Bike is totally fine a little scuff on the left puck is about it. I was wearing full face and my stich suit and armoured gloves and high off road style boots. The simple problem is that I put my left foot down in an ill advised attempt to stabilize the bike as it was going down on the left side, and the force (foot planted in grass) snapped the femur pretty bad. Even the doctor commented on how bad it was. I go to see my local orthopedic doc on Wed and I'm sure he will take some after pics to see how it's doing |
