Just spoke with Jim in tech support. He reports compufire knows of the problem with '09 1125R/CR charging and they do not endorse the application of their R/R product #55402 to our bikes.

More specifically they will do nothing for my fried compufire R/R (after 7 miles) that has been modified with different connectors for the Buell harness.

My bike is now back to OEM R/R with upgrade harness and custom rewind stator. seems fine (charging great) after only a few miles. R/R does get hot though

to be continued, no doubt

Wow, totally different story from what I am being told. Let's see what Jim tells me when I talk to him.

I know they did not recommend cutting connectors off and soldering wires to there unit.

Finedaddy? How's yours working?

FWIW I did solder my own connections.

What I really wanted from compufire was interest in the problem and someone to help troubleshoot.
I may have been interpreted as looking for warranty. Despite saying "I understand no return on electrical parts I am just looking for a solution"

Jim said "I do not know why it seems to work on some bikes" he also said maybe it is an inherent problem with the harness

Maybe it is just Monday morning

I might call later and see if there is any value in sending my failed unit in for a post mortem exam

Gofast- I just put about 120 miles on mine this weekend, I have a little over 700 miles on it so far and have had no problems.......

I am going to check out my R/R and see if there is any discoloring on the backside.

That doesn't keep the warm fuzzies I might have for this reg. Why is it not suppose to work with our bikes again? I might just go with my fan idea to get more air moving where my FH0012A is under the passenger seat.

Or my fan that's been on for about 7 or 8 months of 88.5 miles a day of daily driving and "apparently"...working well.

Cataract - I also located the FH0012AA under the rear of the seat but drilled some 12mm holes in the seat undertray to the rear of the battery to let air in, the air then exits at some slots I formed at the rear near the tailight (evotech tail tidy fitted) - the R/R never seems to get more than warm to be honest despite a fair bit of high rpm work.

about 100miles on OEM R/R and harness upgrade. Bike is fine... OEM R/R is only warm. Custom rewind stator checks out fine with riding and multimeter

The compufire I fried:

I am 100% sure I did not mess up the wiring... honestly it is very simple.

I think where i soldered the 3 input wires it is possible they shorted on each other. This could fry a R/R i think. However, It seems impossible because the splices were staggered, taped, heat shrink wrapped. No evidence of shorting. I also installed a 40amp inline fuse on the positive output of R/R, no way this shorted but if it failed internally. like became open, maybe this could fry the R/R?... seems unlikely

otherwise I think I just had some bad luck and I got a bad unit.

This sucks because I still think this is a great chance for our bikes to be reliable. I just dont want to shell out another 200

oh well,,, I guess I am just venting

I did have a nice ride today despite staring at my BATT indicator

Nothing wrong with venting. I would certainly be. Heck, I've been venting about Tunerpro for a while now.

Tbowdre - you are a gentleman, for $200.00 i might be working the Compufire chain of command a little bit harder.

Word of mouth is everything, Compufire's lack of customer service is a shock to me.

thanks for posting the pics.

I glean nothing from looking at the solder points, wires. All seems good to me....

yes I am an amateur, but nothing that should fry a regulator in my opinion

You had the solder points covered with electrical tape. I don't see how they could have shorted into each other with that unless you didn't tape completely, but from what I see in the pics you did. They certainly don't put out enough volts to render the tape ineffective. Only other thing I would have done is taped the 3 wired together to prevent rubbing.

I think Compufire is bsing on this one.

Thanks for all the support Badweb.

it motivated me to make another call to Compufire

Technical Support. I spoke to Martin this time around

and he was much more interested in hearing about the

1125R charging system problems and troubleshooting

"our" issue. So he wants to see the regulator.

Ill ship to his attn tomorrow.

Some places don't like to honor warranties if they can get out of it.

They are right that it is not designed for our application. We are choosing to try it. If/ when they launch one with a harness for ours then it will be covered. Of course then if they wanted to they could blame failures on rewound stators. ; )

Sometimes though the 'squeeky wheel gets the grease' and someone is found that wants to help. : )

Tbowdre,
I just saw the pictures for you damaged Compufire R/R. Good Job persisting with Compufire. I think that ultimately them will be interested in those pictures. The physical crack and the darkened heat spot should be of most interest. I have damaged a FET R/R by using a fairly large capacitor I was using to dampen a fuel gauge (0.5 farads) So the IC's in the more modern R/R's are most susceptible unless then have protection

I would not sit idle listening to any arguments that the R/R is not manufactured for the application. The only way that might be an issue is if you plan on pulling more than 35 amps (this is the spec limit). But from the pictures there appears to be something else going on. Was that split in the back of the R/R there when you first installed it. That is very unusual as it indicates physical damage. The darkened spot is obviously from heat, but there doesn't seem to be any heat damage associated with the large split.

P.S. I did those original tests and installed the Compufire on my GS Suzuki. I also talked to the designer of the Cycle Electric 600 Series R/R and he said you could plug his into a 120 AC outlet and not damage it. So bottom line you would be hard pressed to damage one of these doing anything except for high voltage ESD.
