I know a lot of you folks have successfully put these on your bikes so It can be done. My question is how did you mount the back end of the left side on the bike. The right looks pretty straight forward with the existing hole on the frame matching the tab on the piece but I see nothing on the left side (in the back) except the large hole on the frame partially covered by the tab on the left piece. It must be something simple but somehow I'm stumped... FWIW, I went with the MDI piece for budgetary reasons. Thanks in advance. | ||

sorry i cant answer your question since i havnt bought these yet... but how is the quality of the MDI? Did you get them on ebay? | ||

Hmmm, I was hoping someone could help since other than the thickness and grain size of the CF, the pieces are from the same mold and are mounted on the bike the same way. The quality is average, not bad not great. It's OK for cosmetic purposes. Personally, I'm not a big CF fan and would have preferred a plain black matte fiberglass if I could find one at a reasonable price. I'm hoping the answer is not double-sided tape. | ||

I replied to your PM. What I should have said is you need to create a plate of some kind that sits behind the frame gap on the left frame leg that you can secure a bolt thru to hold the accent piece in place. (I just looked at mine & it seems I used a scrap plate that I shaped to fill the hole.) Chris C | ||

Chris, yes thanks got your e-mail and responded. I just thought may be there was something obvious but apparently that left rear mount needs to be somehow fabricated. You used a big washer and I used a flat small bracket and screwed the tab onto it. As for the quality and form and fit, I can't compare it with a supposedly "high quality" piece since I've never seen one up close but given the price difference I'm overall pleased with the way it came out. Time will tell how it will hold up to the X1 temperament. | ||

Not sure what this piece is called but its what came with my bike to hold on the tank accent on the left. Works well, I've never had a problem with it. No pics of it installed, been running the bike without the tank cover for a while now. Uses the same screws that attach the accents and tank cover in other places.   | ||

Mine is held on by the same clamp, im pretty sure it was used to hold the stock cover also. | ||

That's the clamp used to mount the stock left side air scoop. I tried it for mounting the tank accent/filler but couldn't get it to work due to the relative location of the tab (on the accent) and the hole in the frame. It is hard to describe if you haven't actually tried to mount the piece. Appreciate the help nonetheless. | ||

On the right side one, i just used the nut zert that is in frame that the original breadbox attaches to and on the left side used several large rubber spacer/washers that fits in the hole on the gusset plate where the frame tubes meet.Then i used an oversized metal washer( larger than the gusset plate hole) and use the original torx bolt w/ a small metal washer and rubber washer( on the outer side) and a nylock nut on the back side.I snugged it down to where it wouldn't start putting stress cracks on the cf.It worked really well on my application and used the existing front attachment points(two on the forward/front of the tank skin area)and the other attachment points on the undersides of the tank skin(about 1/4 the way back on either side)if that makes any sense to you.Hope that will help you in any way.I do know that there are several variations out there.Lowe's had all the goodies there and reasonably priced(i should have stock in that company as much as i venture there). | ||

I'm guessing that the left back mounting tab on the MDI version is too small to allow the use of the stock clamp. Oh well, it held up a day of riding so looks like all is well. We are having great riding weather here in northeast for a change... | ||

I think this thread needs some more pictures! lol! I plan on ditching the stock covers on my X1 that I picked up this winter. My problem on the left side is that it came with that 'fan' upgrade Buell offered. not sure if it will look good hanging out without the plastic scoop masking it. | ||

Even if it doesn't look good, I say keep the fan. I got caught in traffic once on a hot NM day and it made me wish for some form of insurance against overheating. A fan or a temp gauge... something! | ||

..+1 to what Desertfox said(wish i had one of those setups..been lookin' for that).Def keep the fan setup..seen parts for one but not a complete one...oh well. Do you have some pics of it without the stock stuff,Bsanorton?That way i could give you some outside ideas on what can work and look nice on the scoot.Just my .04 cents worth(cost of inflation adjustment)and raising... | ||

Gmaan03...anytime that you have something that can direct air in the direction of the rear cylinder, being moving but more important stationary, then that helps.As i said before,i'd like to have one of those setups for "insurance and peace of mind" expecially in the hotter climate areas..don't want to have any premature failures due to heat related issues.... | ||

Bsanorton..you could go to web sites that sell aftermarket air intake parts for vehicles and see what they have,even go to hardware stores,auto part stores in your area and see what they have to give you ideas(alot of times i just look at something, take measurements and go on a fact finding mission to those places and "whammo" something jumps out from the shelf and i'll take measurements and if it will work, then i'll get it and modify it to work..)Sort of"on the fly"..as sometimes it will happen that way or get that one member to make you one(looking at that one gave me the idea of suggesting aftermarket air intake systems/parts...).If i were in the same area as you i would plan an excursion to do a parts procurement/expedition..let the creative juices flow"outside the box"... |
