so leaving my drive way, i usually cut it at an angle as i turn into the street. well, the other day, i cut it at too much of an angle and turned in too early. -BEFORE YOU SAY IT: i know, i'm a super-squid and don't deserve to ride anything bigger than a 250 cc rebel until the first winter's frost- i immediately knew what i had done and wasn't too concerned, until i started thinking my bike sounded louder on the way to work.  i dismissed it until i was warming up the bike before leaving work, and confirmed that it definetly was louder than before.  comparable to an HMF apex not having any tools or facilites at work, i rode it home, caught a pot-hole on the way and it grew progressivley louder all the way. louder than any replacement system, but just a few Decibels below straight headers. now i have a gaping hole as pictured below;   reminds me of the titanic? here's my curb.   black marks from muffler-paint i had Dean Adams work his muffler majik and send it back to me as an MT-1. i like the way it sound ... err, used to sound. i like the way the stock can filled in the gap under the motor, and exited (with the turned-out tips) i could care less to loose 11 lbs and get a jiardine, or spend more than i do on a monthly payment on another can. but it looks to be too thin to weld to, and i don't even think it would be worth the time/effort/electricity. another can would run me ~ $100 + shipping to Dean + $275 of his 'Majik' + getting it on my door step = over $400 anybody got a suggestion for a volume and style similar muffler on the cheap? | ||

ebay? i bought headers and muffler for $90 while i was in florida, only wanted the headers anyway so muffler went in the bin | ||

Just get a stock can & run it for now... Or I think there might be someone looking to sell a D&D if your "curb-modified" can wasn't loud enough.  | ||

Yep that looks properly b*ggered.. I'm sure you know a Barker for $400 ish. If you can get hold of a stock muffler you can always do like I did with mine and insert a long screwdriver into the outlet and knock through the last internal wall to get a little more sound... it's free after all LOL I have a spare muffler in the garage after fitting the Barker but that's next to sod-all use to you as I'm on the wrong side of the pond and shipping would cost more than sourcing one locally. That doesn't look to be weldable the walls are (as you say) too thin and the curves would make it a real PITA for a DIY repair. If you have a track day coming up I'd suggest a replacement stock can anyway, the way tracks are clamping down on "loud" pipes makes it tought to get anything that doesn't look stock through. Good luck - don't beat yourself up too much, that's easily done! | ||

That can be patched. Some mild steel sheet and a TIG...or even an oxy-acetylene torch. | ||

+1. Not trivial, but I'm a hack at welding, and I could probably do it (since it's steel). Might not look very pretty though... and long term it might keep un-zipping as it rusts. | ||

A Barker pipe is prolly the cheapest good pipe. Now's a good time to get a Drummer or one of Dean's babies... RT-4!!!!! yes... I still love to rap the throttle and listen to the Drummer growl... RT-4 is the best sounding pipe I've heard yet. They are both built very well too, Rob(Carbonbigfoot) and I have hit speed bumps hard enough to scar the road with little-no marks on the Drummer can. I had knocked a hole in my muffler too and had the local muffler shop guy weld a knarly looking patch over it. Worth a try. | ||

I think I measured the thickness once, seems like it was .015-020" (26 gauge?) maybe. It's fairly thin material and it's easy to blow a hole right through it when you're welding. It can be done as far as the patching goes, but it won't be pretty unless you could get ahold of an original piece that hadn't been welded before. I don't know where they were made at though, here, China, or what. I guess if you had some patience and one of those body shop hammers, you could rough out a decent patch and weld it on. | ||

Get it repaired. No big deal. Any competent sheet metal worker/welder will likely do. Who cares about "pretty"? It's underneath the muffler. Am I missing something? Patch it, paint it, go.  | ||

"You'll not find a better excuse to buy a new muffler. " +1. I can't confirm at this time because I put my Barker on in the fall but the bike seems to run cooler without the OEM muffler. My Barker with a 1" quiet core is not quite as free revving as a Barker with out. Either way it is much more free revving than OEM. Unleash that beast. | ||

I did the same thing jumping the curb at the hotel I was staying at in NV.Smaller hole though so I took it to the dealer and they ordered me a new one under warranty.It had surface rust on it so I told them it rusted out which is partly true.Anyway the local muffler guy heliarced a patch on it for me until the new can came in for $30.00.BTW I liked the way mine sounded too | ||

Flatten out a soda/beer can, JB weld the seams and get someone to tig weld it! Or, buy a stocker...!  | ||

Welding 26ga material is seriously difficult. Even a pretty good TIG welder will likely need to back the weld up (impossible on this repair) or use lap-welds only. I've done 26ga SS, and it warps and burns through easily. It's tricky stuff. | ||

Why cant someone make a nice simple exhaust like the vr1000 had on it. Under body exhaust is nice for the track but it sucks for real life with all the pot holes ect. Hell mine hits going into my laneway if i dont baby it. Someone for the love of god make a set of header extensions that come up and allow me to add a pair of slip on Termis. I have no issues using the rear peg brackets as a support.  | ||

that'll buff out LOLz the XB's muffler can take a beating. but these 1125 can's look hydro-formed or something. i'd have to beat another sheet into a bowl and weld it to at the seams. i hadn't thought about the warranty approach. seems kinda skeezy ... so i'll prolly try it but i'm currnetly sourcing a stocker, locally. | ||
