This little quirk has always been a little irritating for me. My 04 XB12R cold starts and idles just fine. I usually let it idle for about 3 or 4 minutes before leaving home. I have noticed that if I don't let it warm up a bit it seems to fall on its face when I'm feathering the clutch for that first take off. I find that the only thing I can do is give it more throttle (about 2k RPM's) and baby the clutch. I'm starting to wonder if this is a cold start enrichment issue. I have the Buell race computer and muffler. Has anyone else noticed this? | ||

My '09 XT used to be very picky about needing time to warm up. In extreme cases it would even die in cold weather unless I held the throttle to give it an extra couple hundred RPM for a few seconds. E.B.R. Race ECM fixed all that. The cold start enrichment on the race ECM seems to behave just like an automatic choke - revs hover around 2k until the engine is warm, then back down to the normal 1050 idle. BTW.. whatever ECM you use, allowing enough time to warm up before riding will significantly prolong engine life. | ||

It's called having an air cooled engine. Warm it up if it's cold, it'll last a lot longer, and you won't get gasket leaks. | ||

For the most part I do let by bike fully warm up before riding it. Everyone knows that once in a while a guy will get in a situation where it's not practical to take the 5 extra minutes to let it warm up. I was just wondering if this was just an issue with my XB or if that's just how they are. Thanks for the info guys. A Special thanks to Glitch for his insight. |
