I've got over 30K on my '00 M2, and it's pretty dependable. I think the problem areas had all been addressed by 2001. My '98 S3-T had a slew of problems, but I also put a lot more mileage on it. There is no other bike that I want to replace it with. Except maybe the successor to the S3-T if it ever comes out.
On an unrelated note; Dyna, last Saturday, it was 75 degrees here, so I took a ride out on the Mohawk Trail. Boy, are you going to love it next Spring when you come out this way. Of course, you may want to head east from here instead of west. If so, we can ride to Gloucester and Rockport and watch the ocean crashing against rocks the size of houses as we come out of one curve and set up for the next. Or,we could head north towards the Green Mountains... |

There is another variable to consider beyond product offerings: trade-in and current market value. The intersection of acceptable sale price and market value has not occured yet, but I may have come up with an option this weekend. Or not. |

I think the M2s and S3s had the same cams . . . . .(could be wrong, as usual), and have also, along with may others, tried to find a thread to link the X1 failures . . .. still ain't figured it out, but, then again, I'm not a failure analysis engineer . . . . . .
people with beefs about their Buells SHOULD be able express them, but blaming the company for the debt incurred to get the scoot is, er, silly . . . ya pays yer money and ya takes yer chances . . . . .
no rose colored glasses here, and still enjoyin my Buell . . . .. I do, however, wish the best for my friends (real and virtual) who are in the midst of arm-wrestling with the powers that be |

Bomber the cams were the same pre 1998 then they put in bigger cams.99-02 cams the same in X1's and S3's. |

Wrong answer! M2s and S2s came with stock Sportster cams. S1s, S3s, and X1s use the "Screamin' Eagle" cams.(Although the fitment changed due to gear pitch at one point). My current thinking is that the stock cams discourage high rev running and, maybe, improve longevity. Although with S1 cams in the Sporty, and 85,000 miles, that may not follow. My rigid engine mounting does provide more empathy with the engine when its getting wailed on, though. |

I know the S2 and M2 cams are the same but the 97 S3 was not thunder stormed until 98 and thats when they change the cams for larger ones.99-02 X1 and S3 were the same. |

The '97 S3 uses the same cams as the pre-Thunderstorm S1s. |

And the post-Thunderstorm S1's as well.
Only two grinds got put into tube frame Buells ... all S2's and domestic M2's got "D" cams (same as Sportsters) and all S3's, S1's, and X1's got SE bolt-ins.
International M2's got the SE bolt-ins as well.
There was a gear tooth pitch change that occurred over the '00 and '01 model years, but the grinds remained the same. |

Thanks for the clarity, Aaron. I am thinking along Bomber's lines somewhat, I think, as I contemplate the purchase of an old tube frame. I would prefer something with the "D" grind cams, which I figure would inhibit high revving on a regular basis. Once I find one, I'll put the Screamin' Eagle cams in and run the sh*t out of it myself!
I do wonder if the vibration related failings (exhaust mounts and ?) are a consequence of the factory's cam choice.
Its the same line of thinking that I would never buy a used 600 UJM sportbike (since it is designed to encourage high revs) but I might take my chances on a litre bike.

My Cyclone has had just about every issue the X1's have had, and then some. Including a defective cam (probably from the (HD) factory). Buy the bike you want, ride it, and fix it when it breaks.

You too Blake. This site is not intended to provide malcontents and incessant bellyachers an open continuous platform to, month after month, year after year badmouth AMAPR. Go start your own web site for that purpose if you feel inclined to make deriding AMAPR one of your life's primary missions as it apparently is. I'm sick of coming to a place where I would like to find friends and positive proactive discussion related to AMAPR and the people who enjoy them, only to find another tirade from the malcontents of the world.

What Dyna said 'You bet I am unhappy with my Buell experience. The folks I have met because of the bike are great, but the bike itself is a major headache.' After re-reading my posts and the responses I have come to this conclusion -- WWFM or Who am I? What do I know? Fuck me! As always YMMV. |

I bought my Millenium X1 a few weeks back, used with 5,500 miles. Just like it came out - no mods whatsoever. My first trip to a HD dealership for servicing wasn't great, but they made it all better once I raised the point they are servicing a Buell, not a Sportster.
I love riding the bike, and I've already picked up enough tips from this board to know what I've gotten myself into.
So, very pleased so far...Great fun!
