howdey all, just wanted to post up my experience of finally getting the S1 i always wanted, in multiple boxes of course! so, all i had was some crap cell phone pics of it all boxed up on my trailer...anwyas after a couple hours tinkering and a small amount of time on ebay gathering some necessary bits, i finally got it sitting up on it's own two wheels! so far i chopped the passenger peg mounts, and the cam cover, as well as installed a big sucker air filter. i still need a battery, front footrest mounts, headlight glass, and some other odds and ends. obviously i have to break it all back down again to install my new isolators, as well as the belt. i have a rotor on the way, and i still am looking to swap the steelie swinger for the aluminum one. anyways, yeah, over the years badweb has been a valuable source of info and entertainment! cool deal! So cool you got to assemble your own bike like that I think it'd be nice to have everything apart, take the time to clean and paint/powdercoat/polish each part and do it how you want it We've spoke about the aluminum swingarm via PM/email, Im sorry I didnt send pictures, I wasnt thinking about it til today, but when I looked I didnt think you'd want mine. Had a local racecar shop (hedgecock racing out of high point) weld aluminum brackets onto mine for my dragbike. While I need to get rid of it, I dont think youd want it, would be extra work to grind off the wheelie bar mounts and get it looking factory where you did. Good luck on this, please post more pics as you get things done! Black PM wheels look nice! |

please send me pics of that swingarm, i like cutting and grinding on most anything! as far as the tail i have going on your m2, it would be the same amount of work as putting any s1 tail on an m2. the frame seat loop basically needs shortened, and i think one support added, no big deal if you can weld steel. if you lived near me i would do it for you. |

Nice one. Looks like a '96. |

Looks like a fun project. I picked up a S1W in boxes that was destined to become a chopper but the kid that had it figured it was harder than what he saw on TV. |

yep, it's a '96. the guy i got it from had wrecked it, then put the original but heavily modded motor in another S1, was going to build it back up with the stock motor but lost interest. but yeah i love to put a bike together! built a cool ducati from scratch once, as well as a couple basket case sportsters, and an XB9. |

Yes nothing like tearing a bike down to each and every bolt and nut. It is a great sense of accomplishment when completed. |

Nice rescue. This year will mark ten years with my S1. While it ain't as pretty, I still love it just as much as the first time I laid eyes on it. |

alrighty, made a little progress today putting it back together. the header the looked OK at first glance when it was in the box isn't going to be OK. i'm pretty sure the collector needs a little straightening (it's ovalized) as well as the L pipe from the header to V&H slip on has a large dent in it. haha, glad i just sold my mig mahcine and got a nice old tig! the oil tank may need replaced, is it supposed to have threaded bungs to mount or something? seems like a leaky idea if that's how it really does mount. the oil pump is missing it's uppermost fitting (the right angle one) need to read up on adjusting the clutch actuator in my service manual things i know i'm going to need still: a left grip (clutch side), braided front brake hose to undo some of the clutter the ridiculous harley-special steel/rubber one. i never could find the key in the boxes like the original owner said was in there, so for now i'll just wire the main power on/off at the throttle button racebike style. have a battery, headlight, alu. swingarm/axle, clutch perch, footpeg clevis, and a couple other small items on the way. that's all i can think of for now... The oil tank is mounted with wellnuts, they can usually be found at Home depot or a hardware store |

oil tank is in thanks to nice new wellnuts form the local ace hardware! also got the new isolators from American Sport Bike in, and i'm glad i did, they really are different! haha, on the front one, if you look really closely has made in china stamped on the rubber tho, who would have thought that?! especially when the package says made with parts from USA and Canada! canada must be the new code word for china... soooo, i finally got a used/operaional shock (the one on it in the pics was bent and had the res. hose cut) but as luck would have it, it's a late model short shock, so i am in need of the short shock front mount. any help fellow badwebbers? |

Nice... if you could figure out a way to hide the battery under the seat or something and leave the open area... i think it looks pretty cool bare bones and all |

chevy - there is space....unfortunately its where the oil tank would go. Im sure something custom could be made to make that work, and it would look really cool, cause I agree, its neat to see it so bare looking. Just noticed the bars on it - what are those off of, stock? I like them, slight rise, im into it |

alrighty, back again with more updates! so, the bike is just a couple hours away from being rideable. have a few things to sort out still: reattach and plug in the harness (always my least favorite part, takes me alot of head-scratching to route it all neatly and out of sight) drop the oil pump to reattach the return barb (PO for some reason thought it would be easier to remove than removing the hose clamp??) install short shock shock mount and short shock. the short shock looks like an overall much better built piece more like a conventional shock, and it's what i could get at the time! (haha any interest in a long showa, good for a placeholder?? the outer cover got really beat up as well as the line severed, guess i could keep it for spare parts) figure out a battery strap, the one i had in the boxes of parts looks to be from a sportster, with no way to attach. weird. double check everything. as far as hiding stuff, yeah it looks so much neater with nothing on it!! i will get around to figuring out another oil tank/battery solution after it's rideable (and we get moved) hybrid, the bars are the 'superbike' bend bikemaster steel bars. yeah nice low-rise, and a decent width and sweep. i have another new one in chrome if you want it. pics to follow! |

also need to add 'adjust clutch cable' to that list... anyone know if a beat up derby cover is OK to use? it's rashed up, also looks slightly dented, but no cracks. would the outermost spring be affected if it was a little dented in? |

If it was dented, I wouldn't use it. It would probably leak or something. I'm pretty sure it's not a functional part of the clutch mechanism. I think that little spring is just to keep the adjustment nut seated in the primary cover. Just for the record, my X1 derby cover has been "rashed" for quite a few years now I think they are pretty easy to find cheaply from an indie shop that installed some chromy-fancy-shmancy crap on a sportster. |
