Currently, I've got Amsoil in the Blast. I did this before I realized just how much oil these things like to dump overboard at high RPM... and most of our riding is highway. What's a good oil for them that's cheap in bulk? Diesel truck oil? I know some people who like Rotella. I'm not looking for dirt cheap oil, just something that's not $10/qt to rustproof the side of the bike under the airbox. |

You might want to consider going to a heavier oil for the summer. My guess is your weather is warm enough to get away with it. If I'm not using Redline, I use Valvoline and never anything under 20w-50, so I'm not much help there. Have you done the PCV breather modification? |

PS Why does your profile say 1125R? |

Mobil 1 comes in 20w-50 now. Its a better choice for the Blast or any of the twins. |

I'm running Amsoil 20W-50 in the Blast right now (and the 1125R). Heavier than 20W50? I didn't know one could easily obtain such things. I've not done the PCV modification - just turned the nozzle away from the carb intake when I had the airbox cover off. On my list... My profile says 1125R because I hadn't updated it with my other two Buells. The Blast is mostly for my gf, but I maintain it. I'll see what the cost on Mobil 1 is - I thought it was comparable to Amsoil. |

Motorcycle oil is 20/50, car oil is still 15/50 - and still the preferred of most long term riders - lol EZ |

Castrol sucks - we are talking synthetic only - Mobil comes in 15/50 for cars rather inexpensively, or the motorcycle oil that is twice as much at 20/50 weight. The differences are very minor. I'm still waiting for Penzoil to come out with a synth 15/50 - so I can switch to that - lol - EZ |

40w is readily available. 50w is somewhat available. 60w can be found. Usually Valvoline, and Kragen seems to carry the 60w. Kendall also makes engine oil up to 70 weight. And Redline makes a 20w-60 specifically for Harley engines. Above 60 deg. you can use 50w. Above 80 deg. You can use 60w. Heavyweight oil and getting rid of the PCV hose to the airbox completely should reduce oil consumption. The heavy oil isnt any more expensive either. The Blast will go through thin oil very, very, quickly, especially in the desert climates. Whenever someone has a problem the first thing I check is the profile for related information. I'd still never trust an air cooled HD engine to anything less than 20w-50, synthetic or otherwise, unless it was winter. I've seen them go through thin oil at an unbelievable rate. |

Hm... alright, I'll look at going with a straight heavier weight. It's definitely going through about a quart per 1000-1500 miles, and given that it's averaging 1000 mi/mo right now, that's significant |

How many miles do you have on the Blast? It takes 4-5 thousand miles before they get in their groove and break in.... Are you over-filling the Blast? The way to check oil is engine hot immediately after shutting the engine off. |

I had have had good luck with Mobil 1 15/50. Couldn't really say how much I go through because I always keep a quart in my saddlebag and check every other gas stop, never letting it drop below the bottom mark. I change it every 3,000 miles and add more to my saddlebag as needed, so I guess I am not much either, other than to say I like the Mobil 1. I did use Amsoil for a while some years back FWIW, didn't notice any real difference between it and the Mobil 1 other than price/availability. Just my two cents. |

Get a new grommet as well. Its just a hose reroute - face valve so hose is pointed towards the front, then loop it around to the back, remember to put on some foam tape where it will touch the frame edges. EZ |

Concur. Thats all it is and its very simple to do. You can run it anywhere you want. Just remember that oil may spew out of it in large amounts, so down low is the best option (at least until you find out how much oil your Blast will spew). |

Not that theres anything wrong with it. I just figure if you dont want to shell out for synthetic, go for the cheapest you can find. |

Yuppers - for 3 quarts at Kragen I can buy 5 at Wally world, and the Blast filter in the Mobil number is there inexpensively as well - so you can go top shelf pretty inexpensively. Being an accountant - I look for those things - lol EZ (Message edited by ezblast on May 10, 2011) |

They don't sell 20W-50 at our Wally Worlds, it is too cold for anybody to run it.....but me! So I have to use Amsoil, because they are the sponsor for Erik Buell Racing! |
