I was trying to bump an old conversation, however, my post didn't bring the thread back to the top. I added the following to the old thread:

"Hey guys, battery is deader than a doornail and good news, I’ll get one of these upgrades. The $154 Shorai Power is out of stock, they have the next level up. So I was wondering about the Ballistic Performance. The Ballistic terminals have the non-OEM orientation; how are you guys working with this? Surely the thick gauge wire won’t flex to the terminal.

Thanks,
Jay"

Froggy,
Ya, I know Erik Buell Racing has one, but it still has a different terminal orientation and on top of that is a lot more money.

Thanks,
Jay

Al over at American Sport Bike has batteries and they are only about $90. Not to mention he will send it to you with a full charge

Try to spend a little more and upgrade the battery to a few more cold cranking amps. Make sure you get the dimensions of the stock battery to match while shopping. Happy hunting : )

The Erik Buell Racing one has a higher cost because it isn't a pile of junk that may explode like the Shorai. It still has a positive terminal and a negative terminal, it shouldn't be any issue to install and gain some under seat space. : )

I have no doubt that the Erik Buell Racing battery is superior to the other brands mentioned in this thread and I do like the idea of supporting Erik. However, at more than twice the price, do you have any data to support that the other battery companies, being of lesser quality, won’t last at least half as long as the Erik Buell Racing?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Jay

Froggy - more info please. Looking for Shorai battery reviews so far doesn't show anything horribly wrong with them.

I like the idea of shaving off a few pounds without dieting... ; )

Mine is about to be replaced next service - it's a bit weak... just curious about the shorai and ballistic batts.

I have 1st hand experience with a SpeedCell lithium battery. Great for the first year, then it quickly started going bad, and within the 2 year mark was reading only 9v with the bike off. There is a Uly owner with a Shorai that had his battery rupture on him in about 2 months after getting it.

The problem with these cheapo junk batteries is they don't have load balancing circuitry on them. This is required for long life and safety, and is what makes the Erik Buell Racing battery stand out from the cheap units or a couple of cordless drill batteries soldered together.

I ended up throwing the stock battery back in my XB, it is weak but it cranks for now. It will probably make it to this fall, then I'll yank the battery out of my CR to put in my XB, and then get an Erik Buell Racing unit to replace that.

Hmm... My Blast isn't far behind either with its battery, perhaps I'll have to get two Erik Buell Racing units to try.

Frank - I'm all for supporting Erik Buell Racing but I would like to go with a Shorai when I need a battery for Loretta.
More than likely tho I will get a new OEM with my employee discount.

There is no doubt however, when the Uly needs a battery, it will be a Shorai 18Ah.
I want to be able to use an inverter on the Uly for extended treks into the hills.
Also the Shorai is less sensitive to deep cycling...

Apparently they have the charger for the batteries now and the fact that it uses a 5-pin connector suggests strongly a management circuit before the 6 battery cells.

: )
Z

unless, that is, they are using four 3-volt cells with a common... still sounds like a smart charger...

Zac, that thing is a fancy Battery Tender. That thing will do nothing to prevent your battery from exploding or failing prematurely.

I have a Carbon Speed battery in the race bike and a Shorai in the motard.

The Carbon Speed is one of the A123-in-heat-shrink jobs, and it's got 2+ years on it here in Texas at this point. That's been my experience for about what a lead-acid battery lasts in the summer heat. So, if it fails now, I'll probably say "hey, that worked pretty well!", and if I get another year or so out of it, it's clearly better.

I've no doubt the EBuellR battery is better, but it's 2-3x as much as all other other batteries I've had really decent luck with that seem to last long enough.

I've never once put a tender on my carbon speed or shorai battery. That alone is gold.

I just got a li ion batt for my CR. I had asked a vendor if the li ion batts can be boosted if needed by a car batt and all I got was lines like " if your battery dies you have other problems." "you should never use a car battery to boost a bike" " our batteries are designed for bikes that are in good working order."

They did not earn my business.
