My battery light came on the other day and was accompanied by dropping voltage noted on the display. I tried to make it home but the bike died before I got all the way. Now the battery will take a charge on the battery tender but I get the same error message and problem. I recently installed an Erik Buell Racing ECM. I had the charging system wiring "upgrade" done about a year ago. Original battery that came with the bike. Anyone want to offer ideas as to whether this is a battery failure or the dreaded stator? |

Probably the stator. |

Mine did the same thing a couple weeks ago. Stator. Yours is under warranty, I hope. |

Reinstall your OEM ECM before taking it in for service. It'll eliminate the possibility for extreme headaches dealing with warranty coverage. |

My money says stator ... |

Is it only me or has it crossed anyone else's mind that all these stator failures may have something to do with installing the Erik Buell Racing ECM? I've thought about installing it but as I've had no stator failure or voltage problems of any kind on my 09 1125r yet ( 4000 miles and still consistently showing 14.2 on the volt meter ), I'm thinking I'll stick with the OEM ECM until my theory is proven right or wrong. |

Captjoe, I have 11k on my 1125 with ebr ecm and have had no issues so far. I doubt the people that designed the 1125 would build an ecm that didnt work with it. |

Captjoe, I am sure you will see a greater correlation between stator failures and those that run Pirelli tires, or aftermarket seats. |

OMG Froggy Anon has stated on this site that the race ECM algorithm charges differently with the fans coming on sooner etc. (Message edited by dannybuell on May 03, 2011) |

And? Yes it runs the fans a little more. It isn't responsible for causing a stator to fail. It would of failed anyway with the stock ECM. Only real difference I can see is that given two equal bikes, the one with the stock ECM will be able to drive a little bit further with a failed stator due to a slightly lower discharge rate from the battery. |

No race ecm for me. I'm sure many others with failures have the stock ecm. |

On a related note, sometimes when i start my bike up (usually after a weekend when it hasent been ridden for a few days), the battery light blips on for a few seconds. Does that mean i should look at replacing the battery? |

Hmmmm... I have Pirelli tires! Now you've got me worried. Anyway, I think I'll leave my ECM as is for now. No use meddling with something that's working fine. However, I'm due for a tire replacement this year so once I get off those Pirellis and my odds of a failure go down, I might give Erik Buell Racing some money. |

I had a stator go down at a pinch over 5000 miles. I think it must be the harness/stator combo for that specific batch of 09/10 CR and some R models. And isn't it curious that they ALL have buell logos on them?!?! So why hasn't anyone made that correlation yet?! I've got 500 miles on the new stator and VR. I'm gonna keep running the Erik Buell Racingecm but I think just to be safe I'll do it without logos or tires.

I just had my stator replaced about 300 miles ago on my '09 CR and yesterday while driving home, my bike died three times when I came to stops. I looked at the voltage and instead of the normal 13 to 14v I typically have, I'm down to 12.1. Each time I restarted the bike I saw the dreaded Charging System Error warning. I can't believe it... I think this stator is also failing! Is there a good way to check to see if it's the stator failing before I bring it back to HD to see if they really can fix the stator this time? Wayne |

The dealer will likely do the following series of tests: Unplug the stator connector and make resistance checks with a VOM set to read ohms. - There should be infinite ohms between each yellow wire (there are 3) to chassis ground. - If that passes check one wire to another and look for 0.1 to 0.3 ohms between each wire (that would be 3 tests). If any of those tests fail, have the dealer replace the stator. |

Thanks for the info Sparky. I haven't put mine in the shop yet. I am going to try this before I hand it over to them... |

wbrisett: did they replace the voltage regulator at the same time? Mine did. So far, so good... |

That's a good question. I need to dig up the work order for it and take a look. But I don't think they replaced the regulator. Wayne |

zero... It's 100% stock (did swap out for the high bars, but that doesn't count). |

HD-Buell of Frederick replaced the stator. Rode it home today. When they pulled the airbox they must have screwed up the IAC tube (sigh, they did the same thing last time they had it). Last time the throttle was just stiff. This time it gets stuck at WOT (nice, thanks)! Oh and oil is leaking to a drip at the stator cover. I will deal with them tomorrow. Such a PITA that every time it is in for warranty work they screw something up. This time has made up my mind that I will not purchase a service contract from HD. |

It turned out I had a loose ground wire. I have been pulling excellent voltages since fixed. |

Got around to dropping my '09 CR back off at HD this morning. We'll have to wait to see what they say about the bike... But right now I don't dare ride the bike further than I can get it towed back to HD, which is sad considering that I'd take my Uly and RT all over the world without a second thought. Wayne |

replaced stator at 7k (charging at 8 volts) replaced VR 9k due to system voltage I would ride highway and country roads the bike charged just fine and would start every time after I shut it down. When I got to the city, in stop and go traffic my bike would charge about 11.8 to 11.6 volts which isn't enough to put a charge back in the battery. If I shut my 1125r down the bike wouldn't start back up, but by jump start..so HD replaced my charging system relay or voltage regulator relay.. |

by the way I was getting the battery light. Now my bike keeps a charge above 13.2 no matter the situation. seems like I have a lot more power also |

Central Texas Harley just called me. The replacement stator they put in, according to them "fell apart", which in the process damaged the rotor. The rotor is on backorder, so it'll be a few weeks before I get the bike back. Wayne |

Well that is reassuring Wayne. A new stator falls apart? WTF? |
