I sold my 08 last summer when I was still living in DC. Last week I moved back home to Indiana (bloomington) and for the first time in a year started to want to ride again. After reading 100+ forum posts on how almost no one regrets buying the DL650, I then came across a few posts by former Buellers. They also had nice things to say, but it was apparent they experienced a Matrix-like feeling. i.e. the Uly "ruined" later bikes for them. I may well get a vstrom of versys later this summer, but I hope I'll have forgotten how the Thunderstorm goes from agricultural paint shaker to buttery smooth through the rev range. If I didn't say it already. I blame all of you for ruining my future bike owning experiences. (Message edited by okc99 on April 29, 2011) |

Yes, you will miss it. Brown County area one of the best areas to ride in Indiana. I'm loving my buell on the curves. |

Why don't you just get another Uly? If your gonna shell out for a V-strom or versy's, find a Uly for sale. There was an 09 going for 5K not that long ago. |

Wait...did I forget to mention that I blame you all? Oh wait. I already said that. All joking aside, I think there should be a support group for former Buellers. It reminds me of a Beavis and Butthead episode in a barber shop with a cleavage seen. Beavis says: "I have seen the top of the mountain and it is good" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0844528/ |

Whisper, I would but she just left me stranded (or nervous) too many times. Hooper (member here) can corroborate. I'm now leaning toward a Tiger 1050. Sat on one yesterday because I know a 650 won't have the same soul as the lump. To that point, I was seriously considering the 1250 bore out of the lump so even more reason to not go 650. I need a tall bike though since I'm 6'2" so there are not many options. Bandit is too short. I love the Aprilia Capornord, but zilch support. Anyway, I think the 1050 might have a good dose of soul. Okc, Sorry to hear your 08 left you stranded My 09XT has been flawless. 21K, and not one single break down, or anything more than a couple of fouled plugs. Really think hard about giving the Uly another shot. Maybe look for an 09? If a bike doesn't really statisfy your soul, you'll always be hungry for what will. |

I had a chance to switch bikes for a Wee and go for a ride the other day. It was a very nice bike and not stock from an air/fuel/exhaust standpoint. It did OK in the twisties, excellent gearing, but you won't lift up the front end coming out of the curves. I have the XB9 gearing in my Uly and it's an unbelievable change for the better as far as control and saving wear and tear on the brake pads. Acceleration flattened out at around 65-70 mph, especially on the up hill climbs. It's a 650 that weighs almost as much as the Uly. The front end is BIG and you sit in the bike more than on it. It is comfortable and I can understand how well it tours. I haven't ridden a Versys, but I have ridden with one. They can haul a** and handle the twisties. The 1050 is just too big for me, especially with that 6 gallon tank up so high. If I was going to go with a Uly style ride, it would most likely be the Versys. But, I'm headed the other direction - as in WR250R or DRZ400. My 09 is for sale in the classifieds and it's well suited. |

I have a 955 Tiger - 1050 probably as close as you can get to Uly ergos, sans the Vtwin. Pretty good machine - fun to ride & triple motor is impressive. 1050 no taller than Uly, but 'sets up' different. Uly still has a certain allure that makes it truely 1 of a kind. She has been a very reliable beast for last 20K miles. I'll miss her !! |

Itilman, How tall are you? I think they "sit" about the same in every dimension. |

I can say that the Vstrom 650 is a good, solid bike, but it's more of a Mr. Rogers type compared with the Thor-like Uly. I had a 2007 for a few years before my XT and I'm not looking back. The grin factor is big for me. |

Well well well, look who came crawling back...the king of the roll-on drag race! Yeah, you had your share of troubles. I really can't explain it, because I'm still rockin' on my '06 with no issues except that it just looks uncared for (dirty, rusty, etc.). Sometimes I think once a bike gets out of mechanical/electrical/fueling/breathing/exhaust equilibrium (caused by either bad service, incompatible aftermarket parts, or a manufacturing mistake), it's hard to get it back right without some serious knowledge and tinkering. And until that happens, you have all those frustrating problems that you endured that kill your confidence and make you scared to ride beyond a four-block radius of your home. I sometimes get that after reading some stories in here. I'm never selling it though...some random guy came up to me as I was hopping off at a pub and basically quoted the Buell/Uly sales brochure with a fanatic's glee ("ZTL brake, I'm mean COME ON! Fuel in the frame? INCREDIBLE, and using the swing arm as the oil bag? Just brilliant. I LOVE Buells!") - yet he never owned one. Just think of the attention they'll get in 5-10 more years. Anyway, the only bikes I realy want to test-ride now because I think I could realistically buy one (as opposed to the Ducati Multistrada), is the Yamaha Super Tenere and a KTM Adventure. Both have the right amount of "ugly" and "cool", are tall, and are set up for whatever comes. Good luck and test-ride safe...thanks for dropping a line... |

I sold a VStrom to get my Uly. I could never imagine going back to that after a Uly. No contest. |
