Hope this is the right aproach.My first post. I have searched the archives trying to diagnose my mystery noise and found this post regarding the same noise. It was as Posted by "paul_in_japan" on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 - 11:45 am: (I can't find it again):-) I tried contacting him with no response. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lE-1zbiWIaI There were a number of responses to his post indicating that they have the same problem but unfortunately noise was not identified. It sounds like the healthy valve train noise of an American v twin engine. In my Opinion : That sound is your valves and oil being brought to the top end | ||

I have owned the bike for nearly three years. The noise devaloped in the last few rides It is quite loud and not what you would expect from a healthy engine. Listen beyond the normal valve racket and you'll notice a rythum coming and going,pulling in clutch makes no difference, as engine picks up revs the noise gets louder and faster. What sort of noise does a failing oil pump drive gear make? clutch bearing?gearbox bearings? | ||

I'd be checking the crank nut , makes a rumbling noise seen a few loose ones. take off the inspection cover on the primary and get a torch and screwdriver, see if you can turn the nut. | ||

I have in recent times in an attempt to address this issue :- replaced the detent plate which had moved and was worn by the starter ring gear on the clutch basket but still functioning,new primary chain and tensioner. the old chain was on it's last legs but still within acceptability. I had the altinator off(front drive sprocket)and checked the glued on field windings,all seemed secure.aparently a significant possibility ..200 lb tension on the front sprocket nut. The youtube example I posted wasn't my bike but it seemed to me that this is a common possibility because three people related to the problem ,now me. Hope someone could relate. | ||

I had something similar on my s1,a loud ticking,it turned out the oil line that enters the pump was partially blocked. | ||

Hey Alfau, I just saw your mail in my inbox. Sorry I only use that email address to join websites etc. and rarely check it. As for the noise I am still unaware as to what it is. My bike is still in pieces in the shed. With parts and labor costing so much here and the fact that I dont know what the problem is I decided to look for second hand engine instead. None surfaced over winter then I recently got a good deal on a '07 XB12r. I am still keen to fix my other bike. I re-posted my problem a few months back. I thought some Harley Engine expert would be able to pinpoint the problem straight away given the symptoms and considering how common these engines are. No go. Could be this, might be that, try changing this. I can't afford time and money wise to change every potential problem part. If you can pin point your problem let me know. |
