Why are you supposed to wait for the red light to go off before starting your engine?
Not sure about other years but that's the case with the 2003 year bikes.
Anyone know for sure?

I think it signifies that there is enough pressure in the fuel system. It should be off in seconds. Often the fuel pump stops before the light goes off and I hit the starter before the light is off. Seems not to matter.

If the light takes 10 seconds or more to go o ff it might mean you have a problem?

You don't have to wait, but it gives the fuel pump a chance to prime, making it easier to start.

IIRC, the owner's manual says something about it. I think it gives the ECM a chance to go through its diagnostic mode.

I was told that it was the period of time for the diagnostic to cycle and to sense the appropriate sensors...I was also told it is important (during a Buell test ride day) that killing the engine with the kill switch before turning off the key was important too....dunno for sure....just sayin'

Fast, funny thing, there was a bug in the programming of early 1125R's that if you shut off with the key instead of the kill switch, it wouldn't shut the ECM off the same way, and as result your battery would be drained within a day or two. One of the reflashes fixed that.

Not sure about the shut off thing, 99% of the time I use the key switch.

I was told that the ECM would start the bike with the settings that were in effect at the time it was turned off if you don't wait.

I have owned 8 Buells and have never waited on the light and never had a problem "engine wise" with any of them.

I prefer to ride my carb'd bike if I think there is even the slightest possibility of encountering Latvians, dwarves or otherwise, especially if they've been drinking.

I'm a decent runner, but just can't take any chances when it comes to carb's vs fi under those sort of time constraints.


I prefer to let the fi cycle before starting my xb, it just seems... proper. Light goes off when the pump primes on my bike.

The fouled plug routine is something different, and requires the proper sequence of control inputs before it initiates.

#1 - roll throttle to wide open and hold it there
#2 - run/stop switch to run
#3 - turn key on
The plugs should fire repeatedly for about 4 seconds to clear any unburnt fuel from the cylinders. I've used the process once on an '08 Uly I was demoing. Heard a resounding pop from the airbox when it finally ignited the extra fuel, followed by a little plume of smoke from the airbox. Works like a champ..

FYI this only works on 08+ bikes.

EDIT: The check engine light should flash while the plugs are firing.

I never wait for the light to go out, I just fire it up. Never been an issue.
