So I've dropped the pan on the bottom of the crankcase to check the oil screen. Question one, is it necessary to remove the screen to clean the top of it or is all debris captured in the pan below? And if (as I presume) you do remove the screen, what method is used without causing damage? Where to you grab it to pull and how hard do you pull? I know there's an "O" ring in there, so just enough pull to pop that out of place? |

Is it necessary to clean the screen ? isn't it for large debris ? |

Remove the screen carefully with long nose pliers. Be very careful with the cover bolts, the stated torque for them is very high considering their size. |

Where are you grabbing the screen unit with the pliers? I presume at the point it goes up at the O ring area, but there's not much to grab that I can see. |

I think I just got a flathead screwdriver under the edge and pried. It seems to pop off easy enough. |

Up the hole. Expand them lightly, and out it pops ......and what is that debris. Like the other poster said, is it cam chain tensioner bits? |

Thats not looking so good ! everytime i've had mine off its been completly debris free. Not to be a scare monger, its probably normal im sure someone will comment soon, but its better to be caught in the mesh than flaoting round the engine. |

I did not know there was another "Filter" other than the cartridge type oil filter. Where is this screen located and how often does it need service? |

That motor had "issues" TWICE..the green stuff is coolant...the good news is when it goes back together, it will be one of the stoutest 1125 based motors around. It is getting some serious attention. |

This screen is on the bottom of the right side of the crankcase and is held on by a plate with five bolts. You have to remove the muffler to get to it. And as often as you want to. |

FYI- there is a little cross-piece in the vertical tube that can be grabbed with small-nose pliers and pulled straight down. And I am pleased to report that there was nothing worth mentioning at all on the screen or in the pan, this is at 5500 miles and I don't baby it. |

Would you use blue/red locktight when reinstalling those bolts for the oil pan? |

I don't. I take them to 10nm and use lock-wire. |
