MilitaryBuell - the FH012AA is still a shunt regulator, the Compufire is a switching regulator - please search this forum and you will find many posts on the benefits of the switching regulator.Regrettably I was in so much of a hurry to protect my stator that I went for a better quality shunt regulator before researching the issue fully. So owners have used the FH014A, I used the FH012AA which has a higher current capacity but is physically larger than the FH014A (Message edited by Dirty_john on April 19, 2011) |

Gofast- you need a connector to fit the Buell harness, if I were @ home I could tell you what it actually is. Info on series type regulators: (this helped me decide what I wanted) http://www.posplayr.100megsfree3.com/FH012AA_Charg ing/SSR_vs_FH012AA.pdf |

I have an undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, and I haven't seen anything in this thread that suggests the regulator is the root of the problem. Exactly the opposite in fact, everything points to poor circulation in the primary, combined with a stator insulation coating right on the edge thermally, combining to cause stator failures. A true switching regulator would help some, but not under all circumstances. You could still easily find yourself in the little corner case of stator death. And I think the MOSFET regulators are still shunt regulators. I don't know if anyone has even found a true switching regulator in existence yet. A quality rewind, perhaps with fewer winds and better insulation, seems like the "fix" to me. The Buell "quick fix" of dropping a leg (probably the problematic leg) in the stator during the "corner case of death" is also a pretty clever hack. Still a hack, but a clever one. Cool, I just talked with Compufire. They are going to put the correct connectors on the CF55402 regulator for me. It will be plug and play. They are also looking at possibly doing a kit that will include the stator too. So it will be one stop shopping. I'm sending them my VR with the harness upgrade overnight. I should have my new VR back before my ride in Hill Country in 2 weeks. This may be overkill, but I really do not want to sit on the sideline watching others play again. Thanks Rob |

Reeicheep Thanks for that, exactly what this is all about; trying to pin down the root cause(s) Yes, it could certainly be the stator; grand jury has not sat down yet, so all ideas are in play. Gofast Good on you for starting a work-through w/Compufire. Keep us posted; maybe it's good that not being able the bend "the gap" pushed you over the top! |

Gofast- That sounds great! I wish I would have done that, I'm doing my best to get my "how-to" up and going so you can see what I've done, it will sure save you some time. I think it's money well spent and I believe you'll be pleased, @ 188 miles into mine I sure am. |

Has anyone talked to Erik Buell Racing about the issue? Surely they've analyzed the root problem and engineered a proper fix for the 1190RS. People will put up with something like this on a $6k fire sale bike, but it'll be a altogether different story if it happens on a $40k boutique bike. |

I'm pretty sure I heard somewhere Erik Buell Racing is using the 08 stator setup on their race bikes. Not like a race bike has a lot of electrical loads... some of them run a total loss system driven purely by the battery, but I don't know how common this is with fuel injection draws. |

>>> Yes, it could certainly be the stator; grand jury has not sat down yet... I've only been following the stator issue casually, but I thought that it had pretty much been nailed down that the issue is with stator overheating. Someone reworked the region around the stator to allow better circulation of cooling oil and apparently that was successful. No? If you read what Bill is saying, I cannot fault it in any way. This is the man who designed the fix for the old problematic speedo sensors. He's as fair a judge as we're likely to get on this issue I think. |

Dirty - Thanks for the feedback. I've been following the debate and knew the switching regulator was explained as a better management system, but didn't know that the Compu-fire was a switching type. Cataract2 - I've also been hoping to hear a more detailed report on the results from the custom rewind stator fix. |

It may be a very good sign that the few folks who had their stators rewound have not been back here to complain about it. Just saying.... |

There has been a few people interested in my Compufire installation so I put together a How-To in .pdf format but I can't get it to link to this website. Everyone so far, that I PM this to has been able to click the link and open it up, so if you're interested let me know and I'll sent it to you via PM. |

Stock ECM. my stator failed at 2,200 miles. I quit looking at the voltage display months ago. I now have 9,400 miles and looked at the voltage recently on the hwy. At 70mph/4000rpm it was at 13.9 volts. Volts run lower when slower. Was this maybe just a QA issue? :-) |

I don't know that any have even been confirmed to exist. It might be a tough thing to package for that much power. |

The Shindengen MOSFET regulators seem to have solved charging issues on lots of other motorcycles. You can find lots of good info online if you do a search. I bought a FH008EB off ebay last week. It sounds like any of the Shindengen regulators that begin with 'FH' would be an improvement over the stocker. |

From what I find on other forums, the FH008EB is 35 amp, which should be fine. The FH0012AA is more than enough at 50 amps. Many will work, but some seem a bit of a PITA to hook due to the wiring arrangement. It seems only time will tell whether replacing the R/R will solve the problem, or just be a distraction. The Compufire R/R sounds to be the best choice. But if the stator itself is the root of the problem, as many believe, it too may be only a distraction..... |

a long piece on another V twin with stator problems...the company that built the engine also has an electronics group - I wonder if they (the electronics group) every got involved. - if you scroll down through the piece, to misc discussions - the subject of oil cooling is discussed - has anyone on this board looked into this type of solution? (paging BLAKE - you hinted that there was a solution ...in a earlier post?????) http://www.jetav8r.com/Vision/Stator/Stator.html added note: the FH008EB comes on CBR600rr also - I have on on my 2001 SV650 - solved the charging problem - the wires are potted to the device - for those of you who don't want to mess around with connectors - you could buy the FH008 - and cut off the (honda)connectors ( close to the connectors )- and then cut off the wires from the Buell/Ducati R/R ( close to the R/R) and splice them together..I would strongly suggest you solder the splice(s) and use heat shrink tubing (yellow to yellow doesn't matter which one - the pos and neg are easy to figure out black is neg) - AND add an in-line FUSE (40 amp) from the auto parts store on the positive output from the FH008 before it get to the battery connection. good luck |

That bike on the link is an antique, but the info is excellent, especially the photos of failed connectors. I've seen many of them fail, resulting in stator failure. Solder and heat-shrink tubing are your best friends! Best to have zero connectors. Then if something needs replacing, just cut and resolder.... There are many forum posts out there about all sorts of bikes with the very same problems... |

This one came off a '06 CBR1000RR It has wire leads instead of sockets. It should make the wiring/soldering simpler and a bit cheaper. I'm going to leave the stock VR where it is. I'll find another location for the FH. If I need warranty work I'll reattach the stocker. |

One thing, with the FH012AA. We all know those a big VR's and the VR likes cooling. I was thinking of places it could go. I'm kinda thinking of installing it on the underside of my rear tail. It would be out there in the wind and open so that would help with cooling. Anyone? |

From what I've read, the MOSFET regulators barely get warm to the touch. Cooling doesn't seem to be a concern, but it couldn't hurt. |

That's what I've found. I put a mosfet type on my VTR track bike and my Ducati and they only get warm, prior to this the VTR r/r cooked itself and you couldn't touch the one on the Duc. |
