Spark plugs, yes. Valves no.
I recemond removing the frame, I think it is easier then rotating the engine. Either way it is a pita to check the valves.

Removing the frame??

Everything is attached to the frame, sounds like you'd disassembling most of the bike

ive managed to do spark plugs without rotating the engine, however its a very tight fit. take your time, it will work just fine.

valve checks definitely require rotating the engine to do it correctly based on the service manual.

im cresting on getting ready to do my second check at now that im almost at 24k miles. a friend and i were talking about this, and he mentioned that it probably isnt necessary to rotate the engine if the rear cylinder valves (which you can check without rotating) are fine. since the rear sees more heat than the front, you can assume that the rear would be the first likely cylinder needing adjustment. i like his logic, so ill be checking my rear without rotating the engine first, then the front only if i discover that the rear needs adjustment.

You have to rotate to check the rear cylinder the shock mount doesnt allow the cover to be removed.

Im starting to think like Pizzboy for checking the back. Only thing is the valve cover will not clear the shock mounting bolt. I just wanted to see if anyone has had luck taking out the shock bolt to get the cover out. Looks like a tight fit and I dont want to try it if it dosent work.

Tanks for any help.

I seriously doubt the front cam cover will come off either. At least not without a big saw...!

Why be concerned, things weren't designed that way. A 3 minute look will tell pretty much the whole story.
As they say...just do it..! There ain't no short cuts with this design.
