So I started this thread a while ago and I appreciated everyones comments on using different stripping methods. Its a rainy day here and that means no riding so I was thinking that maybe I would just do it the old fashioned way with some elbow grease and sandpaper......anyone advise strongly against that? Where would you start...120? 220? | ||

yah i think i do...I was really banking on the weatherman being wrong today and had some rides planned out but now i have nothing to do. | ||

Are you going to leave the frame bare and if so what finish are you after, smooth or rough? I ask that as if your after a rougher finish than I'd shoot for a coarse sand paper. If your after a smoother finish than I'd stay with a fine grit paper. Of course it will take longer to remove the OEM coating using finer paper. As you probably know, don't knock the welds down (I have a bad habit of doing this). | ||

I've been wondering what a silver frame, swing arm and wheels would look like with all black FG fairings and plastics.  I know the RMR (minus yellow) bikes and a lot of other racers have similar color schemes. | ||

got the frame paint off...ended up using a chemical stripper...glad I did as it went super smooth! Since that went so well I need to figure out how i am going to get the swingarm off and do it! | ||

What did you use? <edit> I'm not sure powder-coating, with its temperatures, is a good idea. I'm having Loretta painted with acrylic lacquer(I think) but nonetheless, standard paint... I'm poor so I do the prep. (Message edited by zac4mac on April 16, 2011) | ||

black with polished aluminum - chrome are classic combinations. I never tire it. | ||

dont have the frame fully polished yet so shes not ready for pictures. The front of the frame was more difficult where it seems to be cast. I used a scotch-brite pad and it worked well at getting it out of all the nooks and crannies. The swingarm just looks out of place now. | ||

I'm not sure powder-coating, with its temperatures, is a good idea. No issues at all. The temp needed for cure isnt as high as people think. | ||

So what ended up working for me on the swingarm was tal strip II....I bought it at advanced auto parts. It ate up the finish in minutes....Still required some elbow grease and I had to go back over some spots a couple times but its all cleaned off and I tested a small section for what I am going to do, I went 220 320 400 sandpaper and after 400 its already looking awesome. | ||

Send the frame and swingarm to China for polishing! You can get it done cheap! (see "levers" posting) | ||

I know my masking abilities seem to be a little flawed but I was in a bit of a hurry and I dont ride a show bike anyway....If my bike was in better shape overall I would have taken more time. | ||

Wow... Those look stunning. I'd never want those on my bike. I'd feel obligated to keep it clean more than "Ride through a rainstorm every few months." | ||

I considered that same thing syonyk. However I really disliked the blue/black combo and once its nicely polished it isnt a huge amount of work to re-polish it. If you notice on mine I painted everything that wasnt a huge flat surface. Only the large flat easy to access and polish areas do I have to worry about. A powerball and some polish will make short work of it. |
