Something Ive been wondering about for a while now? Why some folks give their bike a name ? Ive been riding since the 60's, owned close to 30, maybe 40 different motorcycles and never once gave them a name, well, other then "the POS" at one time or another. Question is? Why do you name your bike ? How did you come upon the name, is probably the more interesting question? This isnt a Buell thing, Ive noticed it in every different bike style over the years. Just wondering? | ||

Mine was nicked named Smoke Monster after I started riding along side a group of young sport bike riders. Mostly blacked out, completely minimal... Loud and Rumbly. And I had 1 bad cylinder that was blowing smoke like the dickens. (thank you idiot MMI students). They had never seen a bike that could beat their 600's from light to light, and blow that much smoke. They asked what type of ducati it was. They thought it was Dirty, Ugly, not sure of its Origins.... and all they knew is it left a thick cloud of black smoke where it went. Hence... Mine is "Go Sally Go" And I think we name them because we have a special bond, a personal attachment to our machines. | ||

"Betty" 2002 X1 - bike was black when I bought it so this started as Black Betty. "Silver" 2009 XB12XT - purchased on 16OCT09. I had wanted a Uly for a long time but could never justify another bike financially. Unfortunately, the closure of BMC and resulting fire sale prices is what allowed me to buy one. Hence the silver lining to the cloud. "Sandra" 2000 X1 - my first tube frame Buell, purchased only 3 months after I started riding on the street. The bike is SO beautiful, but I knew if I got too bold with "her", I'd end up getting my ass kicked. Just like a particular exotic dancer from a few years back... "Miranda" 2007 P3 "Rita" 1987 Civic "Jolly Green Midget" 1993 Rodeo "Little Red Rider" 1989 MX6 The list goes on. I haven't had names for all my vehicles, but the ones that really ooze with personality usually get a name assigned. Even if there's not much of a connection between the name and the vehicle, I'll just pick something that reminds me of an event from around the time the vehicle was purchased. | ||

My '03 XL1200S was named Cruel Intentions, because every time I got on her I wanted to rip it and grip it lol. My S2 I named Priscilla, because she was every bit a Latina lady- sexy, beautiful, wild, high maintenance, and often had a mind of her own. My next bike (most likely another S2 or an S1) will be named as well; probably another Latina nombre, since I love Latina ladies . | ||

Interesting responses. Think Gmaan03 explained everything." A personal attachment". That makes sense to me. Sort of like WW2 pilots would name their aircraft, make it personal, maybe then it would bring you back alive. Personally, I always been a mechanic, first with bikes now cars. So to me, they have just been pieces of steel and now lately, plastic. Hard for me to personalize something like that.Always thought I was missing out on something, not naming a vehicle. But now I can see how some folks would. | ||

"there is one thing that annoys me; when people say "she" when describing their ride." Not really sure why this would annoy anyone, even if you don't do the same.. Personally, I talk to my bikes while riding them, working on them, etc. It's just part of our relationship. Definitely more so with the X1 than the XT. The XT is just dead reliable and doesn't require or demand any attention, but isn't much of a looker and doesn't have a whole lot of personality. The X1 always has a new leak somewhere, a new squeak or rattling sound.. it's the high maintenance bike/girl that always seems to get me into trouble. (I purposefully omitted any use of her and/or she from this post) | ||

Lager, that logic baffles me. I didn't name my Volkswagen until AFTER it was totalled and I had to buy a new, empty body and build from the ground up. Learning to be a mechanic made the machine even more important to me. The long hours of toil, cursing, and enjoyment really remind me of an interpersonal relationship. Besides, when you want to yell at someone, you need to know their name! "Goddammit Heinrich!" Now, I tend to wonder, why do most people choose female names? | ||

my X1 is The Chief. I think the naming your bike is similar to naming your horse (if you have one, but if not you can imagine) bikes that need to be taken care of develop a kind of personality that animate the machine. As you work on it and learn its similar to an animal in some weird way. thats just my opinion though | ||

This getting better by the moment. Most are female names, I can understand that. Next question is, do you think of the bike with the name or do you actually Call it that? Example, when you tell your significant other that your going on a ride? Do you say "Hey,Im going to take( insert name) out for a ride?" I know some Honda ST-1300 riders that actually have the name of their bike printed out or painted,stuck somewhere on their bike. To me, thats a true enthusiast . I admire that attitude. | ||
