I want to get new exhaust and the race ecm but I am wondering what exhaust I want and kind of looking around at waiting for a used one to come up. Would it be worthwhile to get the race ecm for stock pipe until I get the exhaust I want and then send to Erik Buell Racing to get re flashed? Does the race ecm do much good on the stock pipe? On my old xb12ss the race ecm and stock pipe didnt do much better. |

That's what I'm doing....I have the race ecm until I get a keda or hmf pipe. Race ECM makes a world of difference IMO. |

Well, just for rid-ability sake, the Erik Buell Racing ecm makes a world of difference. It will smooth out your bike in the lower rpm range and there will be an increase in RWHP throughout the power range. Although, it won't be a huge boost (IMO). Once you get the pipe on there, the two of them will mesh very well and then the overall performance will really be unleashed. Smiles for miles!!! |

Also, the temp on my bike dropped considerably while ridding with the Erik Buell Racing ecm. That alone was worth buying the ecm in my opinion. |

The Erik Buell Racing race ECM is totally different than the P&A Race ECM you had on your XB. Comparing the two is like writing off chicken sandwiches because you don't like the cheeseburgers at McDonnalds. I run a Erik Buell Racing Race ECM with the stock pipe, just two words: DO IT. It is nice being able to ride whenever I want without having a stupidly obnoxious pipe, which is pretty much what every aftermarket 1125 pipe is. |

I do like the idea of staying stealth for the most part and not being heard from blocks away. Looks like I will start with the race ecm, Do I need the K&N air filter to go along with that? I need a new filter anyway so I will most likely buy it regardless. Always been a fan of K&N. I only really want to replace the exhaust because of how ugly it looks and how ugly mine is starting to look. |

Yes, and yes. The difference between the stock ECU and the race ECU on the stock pipe is night and day. The bike runs cooler, smoother, and all around better. It gets rid of the goofy spots around 3k & 5k RPM (IIRC - look at a graph of the stock fuel map and it's absurdly obvious), and the engine is in every way better. Best $250 I've ever spent on a vehicle. I'd almost consider it a mandatory upgrade. |

..... and the E B R ecm gets rid of the nasty throttle body solenoid shutting down your acceleration under the right *or wrong* situations..... just trust me and get it |

I add my voice to the throng; do it. I just did the install this afternoon (Erik Buell Racing ecm with stock pipe) and it makes the stock ecm feel broken. |

I would also recommend the Erik Buell Racing racing ecu on stock exhaust. lower temp, better run. Engine seems much fresher. |

It makes a great bike terrific! I can putt around the neighborhood easily, everything's smooth fast and cool running - charging is almost always at 13.4 - a vast improvement. EZ |

If I can just say that owning an aftermarket exhaust is not stupid or obnoxious. Some of us prefer the safety aspect of a louder exhaust as well as the HP/performance benefits that come with it. Just sayin! |

> "If I can just say that owning an aftermarket exhaust is not stupid or obnoxious. Some of us prefer the safety aspect of a louder exhaust as well as the HP/performance benefits that come with it." Safety comes from planning ahead and expecting the worst -- not from expecting everyone else to hear you coming. As for the supposed "performance benefits," how about the third gear wheelie I did yesterday, over the crest of a slight rise in the freeway? Oops, as I carried the front wheel though 85 mph, I noticed 3 Highway Patrol officers having a pow-wow right by the side of the road there. But before they could look up, I had the front wheel back on the ground and was coasting down through 70 or so. Oh, yeah, they heard my 1125's roar, but because I have the stock exhaust, they didn't HEAR me before I SAW them. Personally, I prefer "performance benefits" I can use, and one of those is stealth. |

Although I'm sure you can cite any number of specific instances where loud "saved you", it's been show statistically that modified exhaust systems have no effect on motorcycle multi-vehicle accident rates. I'll dig up the old references I found when this topic came up if you like. |

I'm currently running the Erik Buell Racing Race ECM with my stock pipe due to being a bit worried about my Drummer with DB Killer being a bit to loud and attracting the Polizei here in Germany, unless some on here can confirm they've run an 1125R with aftermarket pipe and had no troubles. Anyways, the Race ECM will work, but your bike will run a bit rich with it. Also, per Erik Buell Racing themselves, it will run a bit to rich on WOT so you won't get maximum power the ECM is capable of. They do have a map for the Race ECM for use with the stock pipe though. Talk to Erik Buell Racing about it. |

I don't dispute that there are benefits to having a quite exhaust. All I am saying is that there are benefits to having an exhaust that can be heard. And yes, I can speak about several separate accounts in which my current exhaust has aided me in deterring potentially disastrous situations. The point I was trying to make is that there is no need to say something is stupid or obnoxious just because it is not something so and so may or may not like. To each his/her own. |

> To each his/her own. I don't think anyone disagrees with that, but to justify a loud pipe for safety reasons turns out not to be statistically supported. In other words, there is no advantage to having a loud bike when looking comparing your likelihood of being in a multi-vehicle accident. But, said lout pipes can be and sometimes are very disruptive in many urban settings. |

Granted! I can understand drag pipes or some of those HD Screaming Eagles or the like being a bit of a pain in the neighbor's ears. But in my case, most of my neighbors can't hear my pipe and the ones that can actually like the sound. I have a neighbor across the street from me who takes her grandson outside to see me ride up the street and into my garage when I get home from work. The little guy loves the motorcycles. |

When I first got my Drummer, I was afraid it was too loud. That's how I wound up with it in the first place - Ray Farrell(Rocketray) bought it new, decided it was too loud so he gave it to me. Anyway, the test was to ride thru the neighborhood a couple of times. Even the grumpy old lady smiled and waved as I went by - it passed the test. Z |

a constant steady pace with my 09cr; oem ecm, no packing barker with 1" quiet core does not bother the dogs (on leash) in my neighborhood. I can appreciate the stealth argument until those intersections where the guy on your left doesn't see you turning left and he is looking left.... Bark like a big dog or wimpy 'beep' to wake the idiot up? Which one do you think will even be heard if the cage has the radio on? |

The horn can be a very effective thing... at shorter distances the higher pitch can be easier to resolve in terms of direction (easier than a low frequency rumble for sure), and sends the message "watch out!"... versus the message transmitted by a loud exhaust which for many is "if you want to improve the gene pool, now is a great time for some careless driving." |

Well, if you drive on the freeway or in anywhere in So-Cal for that matter, there is an abundance of careless drivers. Letting people hear you coming (or not, its your choice) is just part of the equation. Planning and scanning are a must when you ride but you can't plan for everything and whether the statistics back me up or not, I have been ridding for a while now and loud (but not too loud) pipes have saved my bum plenty of times. |

For behind me I prefer this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KA_AUNaPffk I like loud exhausts for when beside people on the hyway as around hear shoulder checks are rarely seen. Those in front of me hear nothing. |

Agreed! A louder pipe works very well for those next you who have an inkling to suddenly enter your lane. A loud pipe will generally get their attention before that happens. |

I like to be stealthy and have air horns. I have been cut off by drivers who aren't paying attention while driving a fire truck, so I personally don't think a loud anything helps with some of these people. On the bike, I simply assume everyone is aiming for me and position myself accordingly. Some of these drivers just simply shouldn't have a license. |
