Dealer had the rear wheel off to fix a leak caused by internal corrosion. Just noticed that the belt doesn't seem to be fully in the channel of the sprocket? The outside edge of the belt is fraying slightly as it seems about 1/4 inch outward from where it should be. Is this normal or do I need to take it back and have them fix it correctly. Is the fraying edge of belt an issue? Is this post useless without a pic? |

Sounds normal, but a picture would help, if the bike has been pushed backwards the belt will run out more, but goes back into place once you go forward again. |

My belt is off by about an 8th of an inch and that is the way its been since I purchased my R new in 08 and I now have over 11,000 miles on the same belt. Hope that helps a little. |

Is your getting fuzzy on just the one side? My belt looks new on the inboard side but the outboard side is being rubbed for certain |

there are manufacturing tolerances for belt. My 08 has the belt dead on the sprocket and my 09 is about 1/8 inch off. Totally normal. Is it rubbing on the belt guard? I shimmed my belt guard out with a washer or two for add'l clearance. (Message edited by fresnobuell on April 04, 2011) |

There is a slight thread shredding on the outside of the belt but it is not extensive. Just the loose ends from the edge of the belt that are frayed a bit. It sounds like you may have an issue if your belt is starting to rub on something. |

keep and eye on the rear wheel bearing seals - I have an '08 with the orange seals -put a new belt on mine - the rear wheel bearing failed (the seal popped out and several balls "made like Elvis and left the building") prior to the new belt, I "modified" anything that came close to the belt especially the bottom rear of the foot peg mount (the old belt showed "rubbing" on the outside edge with threads starting to de-laminate) needless to say I have new bearings front and rear the new belt tracks as described above in this post - up against the flange when rotated going forward - a little "off" when rotated backwards. good luck |

A post from someone at Erik Buell Racing a few months back alluded to the belt having a "preferred orientation". The lettering should be right-side-up when viewed from the left side. I have NOT verified this by flipping one of my belts. If your belt snugs up to the flange when rolled back, then moves out 1/8-1/4" out going forward, try flipping your belt. As far as de-lam, the belts are cut from a wider piece, almost all will show some threads in places, depending on the lay when cut. Z |

Holy Sh*t! I was just going to post this as well. My '09 CR belt is rides flush with the outside of the sprocket. It is also fraying on the outside. In the past I noticed that it would just float around anywhere from the inside, to the middle, to the outside of the sprocket... Now it's been on the outside only. I will post up pictures later tonight. |

yes it is, i was told you should be able to read the writing on the last picture, it shouldn't be upside down. something about the belt teeth are slightly slanted so they pull the belt into the sprocket, but when its installed wrong it pulls out. |

I've just bought a 08 1125R and the belt is the same . |

It was someone who was posting what he said he was told by Erik Buell Racing. Not saying that I don't believe it, but I rather hear it from the source rather than second hand. |

I'll stop by the dealer and see what they say. I am sure I will get the usual "WTF is this kid talking about" look... |

Granted the info was 2nd hand Froggy, just needs somebody to corroborate. I think I'm going to start tearing Loretta down for paint, tax return will be here soon. If I get the chance, I'll flip my belt that has ~10k on it and see if it makes any difference. Zack |

will check my belt as well. Mine looks pretty much like yours except a little more frayed in spots. |

Mine looks the same. 26K miles and counting. Like my Buell tech says...just ride the bike. |

Yup, my belt is exactly the same as Captain_america's pictures depict. I have never had an issue in the 11000 miles that I have ridden my R. |

Mines the same - and the "orientation" question has been refuted before, it genuinely doesn't matter which way round the belt is, that's a pure aesthetics thing... |

Well The Harley guys didn't even know what I was talking about.... Surprise, no. haha What ever. I am not worried about it, I am just anal about things like this and think the belt should be in the middle or to the inside edge; Not trying to come off and eat my leg/foot |

Well, I know some are saying the belt orientation has been proven not to be real, but here's the email, I've posted before, where the guys that designed the bike say otherwise. I don't know who's right, but I asked them and put my $ on their direction & it solved my belt issue. FWIW: David, One more thing that is likely to be wrong from your description (although I can't emphasize enough how much you need the complete set of all CR belt drive parts), is belt installation. You may need to flip the belt around. The label should be readable from the left side of the bike rather than be upside down. Since the cords run at a slight angle the belt does tend to have a slight tendancy to bias in one direction. We put the label on in such a way that the belts tracks to the inside of the rear sprocket until it meets the flange. This side presure is low, but its stubborn. We don't recall ever getting mis-machined swingarms, but it could happen. Put a long straight edge on the rear pulley pointed toward the front pulley to "eye-up" the alignment. It should be within 3 mm. From: David Affeldt [mailto:david.affeldt@grsi.com] Sent: Saturday, May 01, 2010 10:15 PM To: Tech Subject: RE: ECM After installing it I test rode and the ECM feels great, thanks!! Quick question, I then installed a new CR swingarm on my 08 1125R, & the rear sprocket & belt from the CR to lower my gearing, which is why I went with a CR ECM. Install was straight forward, but following the service manual once everything is together I find the belt walks itself about 4mm off the rear sprocket (towards the outside)when I go forward, and walks itself back to the inside when spinning the wheel in reverse on a jack. I've disassembled/reassembled 3 times & can't find what's wrong. The internet gurus said I needed to install the CR idler bracket, but it doesn't fit on the R, so it seems that's not needed. I thought I'd ask if you all have any recommendation on this modification of installing the CR gearing on the R that might help me out, as I'm stumped. Thanks, Dave. |
