Just watch for leakage behind the front pulley seal. Rocker boxes are known to leak. Enjoy riding it 1st if its not leaking right now. Buy a factory Service manual. If you have any mechanical aptitude, it will make you one with your Buell. If you ask a Harley Mechanic to work on your Buell, his head will explode. Check the knowledge vault. Infinite amounts of great info |

Sorry I forgot to mention to pay attention to your oil level. The older style single lip Mainshaft seal on these things fail, causing your engine oil to end up in the primary. It will then puke out the trans vent and on to the rear of your bike including the rear tire. If you see your oil level going down but no drips, chances are your mainshaft seal is leaking. I can't stress enough to go beyond your mechanical comfort level. Armed with the FSM and help from the Badweb forum, you will be able to resolve the majority of issues your self. The shock on these things is prone to failure also. Race Tech does a great job of rebuilding them. For all of their quirks, I can't imagine not having at least one Buell in my paddock |

hiya Eshard thanks for the reply. yeah i dont see any leaking anywhere , and i will keep a eye out on my oil level as well. I just went out there to see if it would start with the carb the way it is wouldnt even start ohwell guess we will see after i get this rebuild kit and fix this carb maybe then it will work lol thanks! and i downloaded a service manual to the bike and it said before i downloaded it for the 98 buell s1 lightning but it says its for the 97 ... is it the same thing? can i use this 97 manual for my 98? thanks -Nick |

Copy/pasted from another thread, here are the production numbers for S1's (1996-98)and S1W's (1998 only). Once you post pic's we can tell you if yours is an S1 or an S1W. (hint: the tank is bigger on S1W's, and the heads are black, not silver/gray). '96-'98 S1 4,680 '98 S1W 2,210 Total produced 6,890 |

Once you get the carb worked out and are back on the road, check oil after bike is warmed up. These things tend to wet sump while sitting so if you check the oil with the bike cold and add oil, you will blow the cap out of the tank once the oil in the engine returns to the tank |

yeah its diff. a S1 lightning since its red and says so on behind the seat hehe, yeah the guy that fixed my bike the first time after it was sitting changed the oil and everything, he said he put too much in because like what you said put it in cold and what not when he went to drive it he said it started pouring everywhere so he had to drain some out. wow i cant believe only 4,680 bikes where made between 96-98 thats pretty rare i think not sure though lol prob. about 3/4 of them are wrecked by now im sure but i will check the oil again after i get it going since its been sittin for almost a week now |

Sweet looking bike! The V&H S22R for this model produced the best power according to an article in Battle2Win the Exhaust Shoot-out thread. You do have an updated front exhaust hanger, that's a very good thing. That open header is costing you power. Will it pass (safety) inspection without fenders? It wouldn't here. |

He's talking about the Force exhaust pipe. It's very loud, maybe quieter than what you have now though... Read all the thread I mentioned above and you'll have a good start on getting familiar with your options. |

I believe your rear isolators are shot. Could be the camera angle, but the bolt looks too high up in the opening. You should check those before you ride it again. |

Real nice bike. I don't know much about carbs but I suspect you may want to put an exhaust on the bike before you dial in your mixture. |

thank you all again for your comments! that would be great if you could never2late, and the bike isnt running right now the guy that cleaned it last just made the whole thing flood with gas so now i cant ride it lol guess thats a good thing? im taking it to this place in batesburg sc its a triumph dealership *small* the guy seems to know what he is doing and talking about, he had a ducati and a couple of other bikes out there he was working on or something, he said he knows how to work on buells too. So after my carb rebuild kit comes imma take it to that guy and then tell him to give the bike a good look over and see what else needs to be done, hopefully i didnt buy a lemon lol but it does run... not now though :P -Nick |

I have a whole exhaust off of a m2 that would fit the bike for cheap, it might need some cleaning up on the muffler, looks like its been gutted. cheap! |

Wonder if someone could make the First set of pictures any bigger so I could justify getting a 46"+ flat screen to use as a monitor. |
