I have a 2005 XB9SX that I love. Awesome winter commuter, great "traffic sucks" bike, great track bike.

Right now, it has the Buell race exhaust, a K&N filter on it, and a piggyback fuel controller with the stock ECU. I purchased it like this.

When the bike is cold, it does not want to stay running. It will idle out while warming up, and if I go to ride before it's fully warmed up, it dies out on me and won't respond to throttle unless I clutch in, rev it up, and slip the clutch. Up there in the "annoying" scale.

I'd like to replace this setup with the Erik Buell Racing race ECM for the XB9. I've heard rumors about this holding a 2000 RPM idle until the engine is warm - is this an option I have to request, or does it do this with default settings?

Also, is there anything else that would likely be related to the stalling out? I know the plugs are a bit old, but the bike runs fine when warm, so I doubt they're fouled out.

I'd say first recharge your K&N filter and replace the plugs. Those are two easy things and the cost is low too...Good luck.
BTW in case you didn't know the K&N is a lifetime filter but MUST be cleaned and recharged. Now if you already knew that dont take offense. I am only trying to help.

: ) Fair. I suspected that the piggyback might be causing some of the problems...

Boliver: I'm aware, I have a cleaning kit that's due for use here shortly. I should probably do the plugs too - I believe they can be done with some fiddling and not rotating the engine.

Yeah plugs are cheap, and easy on our bikes....nowhere near as tough as some make them out to be.

Yes I have a SCG and it took maybe 15 minutes to change my plugs out. This time it was good I didn't go by the manual. I ain't saying it was easy, but engine rotation was NOT a necessary. Your profile says you live in NM. That is a pretty dry climate so maybe the filter cleaning will cure all your bikes ills. Good luck.
