Hopefully this isn't a too much of a repeat kind of topic. While I was home on leave from Iraq, I bought an 09 1125R with about 4500 miles on it. I asked the seller what kind of maintenance he had done. He stated that all he had done was one oil change and didn't say when or any other details. So my question is how screwed am I given that I've read a lot about break-in period and how to and not to do it. Second, I would appreciate any suggestions about how best to proceed from here. Break-in, brake-in, broke-in, there are about as many opinions on this subject as there are with what haircut to have. Fortunately for you, it's already been done, so nothing you can do, so best to not dwell on it too much. My recommendation would be to do what I would recommend anyone buying any used vehicle. Do a thorough once (twice) over on the machine, checking fastener tightness and overall condition. Also do a fresh fluid change (you don't really know when it was changed, now you will know for sure). Then, go ride. | ||

Militarybuell - most of the bikes out there have never really been tapped into, they are fast enough without stressing too much of anything. By the time you figure that whether it was raced or babied you will likely have 50 or 60K miles on your bike. 1125 Oil consumption IS NOT an issue. There are a few here with 40K+ miles and I don't recall any complaints about oil usage. The only 09 issues are clutch weep and the stator, a part of the electrical system. use the multi colored google search function at the top of the screen... | ||

99buellx1 pretty much summed it up. Get some fresh oil in it, and don't stress over what the previous owner might have done. The mileage is low enough, if the oil was changed once I doubt much could have been done to hurt it. | ||

Contact Harley and see if they will extend you warranty for the time served overseas. With the break in, you would have to ride like a nut to do much damage to the engine, there is too much power! |
