I have an '09 CR with about 5500 miles on it. Still has original stator and NO updated charging harness, It has ALWAYS been at a minimum of 13.4 volts at idle. Well I went on about a 100 mile trip and when i got back home the bike's temp was also hotter than normal(in the 220's after being on the highway) and it was only like 75 degrees outside that day.I noticed my blinkers were blinking much faster and checked my voltage after i pulled into the driveway at home and it was at 11.8. Today I ride to work(only about 10 miles) and it stayed charging around 14 voits the whole time. I got to work and let it just idle after it cooled off. Started good at 14.4, but after it warmed up and fans came on it started dropping pretty quickly down into the high 11's. If I gave it gas it would climb back up into the mid 13-14 volt range, so it seems to only be NOT charging at idle. Anyone else with this prob? I'm just afraid to go on a longer trip and it leave me stuck. I love my bike and plan on keeping it a long time. It is still under warranty, but replacing the stator and regulator with the same parts just seems like a waste to me if its inevitbly going to go out again. But I'm not sure if thats even the definite problem and dealers around here don't seem to be too Buell educated. So they will see it charging with throttle and say everythings fine, but my bike has never gotten that low b4 in the year and a half i have owned it. Sorry for making this so long, can I get some help or insight I would greatly appreciate it. I am an ASE auto technician so understand most of what is going on with the bike and have the service manuals. |

Stator on it's way out. The fans don't run when the voltage drops below a certain amount, that's why it was hotter than normal. My stator didn't quit all at once, but eventually it was showing 12.x volts while doing highway speeds and then the bike would not restart. |

Mine acted the same way when the stator failed, never saw the overheat as it was a cold day, but the blinkers started flashing faster and the voltage was erratic. Checked the stator and it was shorted to ground. Easy enough to check the stator, just disconnect the plug and check to see if there is *any* continuity to ground, if not then check resistance across each leg, should be .1 to .3 ohms. If that all checks then start engine and check ac voltage across each leg, should be 45 to 55 volts at ~3000 RPM. I picked my bike up today after the dealer replaced the stator (still under warranty) my old stator was crispy black. |

How are you guys seeing voltage? is that a 09 change, an add-on meter? |

Thanks for the replies guys, that's pretty much what i was thinking, the dealer has to see it act up which takes a little time after it heats up. I took a pic of the cluster when it was at 11.8, hopefully thats good enough. Gonna try and get them to warranty the regulator too, just to be safe. |

No, the dealer does not necessarily have to see it act up in flight to diagnose the problem. All he has to to is follow the diagnostic tree in the Buell Electrical Diagnostic Manual. If you are an ASE then check it yourself so you know what is going on before going to the dealer. Just follow the procedures listed in chapter 3.3 of your 2009 Buell Electrical Diagnostic Manual. You did say you had the manuals, correct? |

I had similar symptoms yesterday, when it was pretty hot, the voltage failed to 13.2 at idle, but restored to 13.8-14 when riding. Water temperatures were also pretty high, up to 192 degrees. When bike cooled down, it was back to normal around 14. The alternator cover was too hot to touch for more than few seconds. Looks like my second stator is going bye bye soon. It was replaced 1500 miles ago, the harness was installed too at the same time. |

Ya i want to keep the bike reliable for as long as i have it so i'm not afraid to go on a long trip, that's why i was thinking about doing the custom rewind. I know its money out of my pocket, but it would be worth it to not have to worry about this failing again. But then again warranty is free. ughh what to do. |

So did you verify that your stator is failed? or are you simply going to trust the dealer? |

I havent had any time to do the full diag myself yet(with 2 small kiddos running around), so my day off from work is tuesday and I'm going to drop it with them and show them my pic of it dipping into the 11 volts, just in case they can't duplicate it. |

Happened to me this weekend as well. Temps only in the high 70s, but coming back from a 5 hour trip I got within a mile of the house before the battery light came on. Water temp was a little over 200, voltage at 11.4V. Would not get above 12V, even revving the motor up to about 7K. No error code thrown yet, and searching the site I couldn't find at what voltage it was supposed to come on. Thankfully the warranty is good until October. I think my check engine light came on somewhere around 11.2 volts. |
