Bought the 2008 1125R used, should still have some warranty left, but would like an idea of what's going on before I hit the stealer. The problems are getting worse over the last 900 miles - intermittent check engine light. Typically after I've been riding awhile. Comes on. I kill engine, restart and it clears the light. Will often occur again in a few minutes, may do this 3~4 times, then fine the rest of the day - getting hard to start after it's been running. Will crank and crank and not fire. Used to just turn off key, turn back on and it would fire. Now it doesn't. Giving it gas while cranking can help, but still takes a bit to fire. External and internal temps don't seem to matter, typically occurs after riding for over an hour. Can occur with a quick gas stop, or an hour long lunch stop - seems to have some hesitation at times, particularly in 1st gear. The problems have been very intermittent and I've been unable to establish a set pattern beyond what I've stated. Never stranded me yet, seems to run well overall. Naturally does the buck and snort below 25mph, but I'm assuming that's EPA fueling and would be solved with a Erik Buell Racing cpu. No engine mods, stock air filter, just added side fairings (mentioned in case they are causing a heat issue that's been seen before) I have disconnected the battery a couple times to attempt to reset things, no change (Message edited by sprintst on March 22, 2011) |

I don't have any way to check codes yet, I'm assuming it doesn't take a OBDII reader. |

No you don't need that to check. I believe all you need to do is hold toggle and mode down on the cluster while turning the key on. Than you can check your codes and setting of the bike. |

Yea hold down the two buttons on the dash while turning the key on, it will put you in diagnostic mode and spit out the codes for you. My guess off hand would be fuel pump or clogged injectors. |

Is there a link for the trouble codes, or I do have the service manual |

I had Comm Error, similar engine stops, codes for fuel pressure sensor and something else... replace the ecm solved everything, in fact, everything is fine, except the ecm. but everytime when engine stopped itself, i had comm error on the screen. try ignore other codes first, replace the ecm. mine was very bad at first, but it kept getting worse and worse, and finally became very serious and somehow detectable. |

Are you running the stock ECM and stock exhaust? |

Did you just try replacing the front oxygen sensor? It sits right on the front head pipe directly in front of your motor. |

If its under warranty, why not just take it to the dealer and let them sort it out? |

Sounds like a fuel pump. I had those exact issues and it ended up being a faulty fuel pump. Take it in for a warranty repair. |

It is probably just the front O2 sensor acting up giving wrong readings, and as result it is enriching or leaning out to the point it won't run right. Possible exhaust leak? Either way, drop it off at the dealer. Also just reading over your first post again, you would need to disconnect the battery for a long time for it to reset anything. |

*should* still be under warranty, will be taking it in this week fyi - electrical manual says the only way to clear the codes is with a diagnostic tool (Message edited by sprintst on March 23, 2011) |

fyi - electrical manual says the only way to clear the codes is with a diagnostic tool Or 50 "cycles". Sounds like an O2 sensor though.. Just FYI if you buy the Erik Buell Racing ECM it'll probably come with a load of historic codes in so don't get too concerned if you plug it in and it reports loads of "faults" |

"fyi - electrical manual says the only way to clear the codes is with a diagnostic tool Or 50 "cycles"." Or make the ecm think its done 50 engine cycles |

Or use ecmspy to clear the codes, works every time. |

Just put it in the shop today, since we've got a crappy weekend and I'm on travel next week |

While in the shop, have them check if it has the latest calibration. I have an 08 and experienced early on similar symptoms as what you describe. They went away for me after a front O2 sensor replacement and calibration update. |

They pulled the VIN when they checked the warranty status, everything was up to date. I'm assuming this would cover the calibration update Note - you can do this yourself on the Harley website. (Message edited by sprintst on March 26, 2011) |

That's not necessarily accurate At my last service (36K) I took my bike to another dealer (than previous services). The tech told me I had an older calibration, even though the VIN indicated it was up to date. To be sure (eliminate the unknown) have them hook up the digitech and check. |

if its a post jan 2009 bike, could be ok with that, my dealer didn't know there was a calibration update. btw, mine became A LOT smoother under 3000rpm after the upgrade, before that it was not ridable with 4 finger on the clutch lever at that rpm... |

What Ozzy said... I work at a Buell friendly dealership... If I check H-Dnet, it tells me where you stand for recalls, what color your bike is and what parts are included on your warranty. Lots of info, but nothing about which "flash" you should have. That info is on the "calibrations" tab at H-Dnet. The display for Loretta looks like this -
Then, they need to hook you up to a Digital Tech and see if you need an update. You can also do this with software from the interweb, but you better be a Froggy level geek. Oh, BTW, my OEM ECM has the 062 flash and it really wasn't bad. Easily the best OEM map. The Erik Buell Racing race ECM is the right choice tho. Best 250 spent on Loretta. Z |

The VIN contains no such data, and Harley doesn't store it on their database. Only way to know your calibration is to plug it in either with TunerPro or the dealer computer. |

Well, got the call back - basically "can not duplicate" Says the codes are old..... Guess I'll pick it up and wait for it to pull codes and check light again |

the hard start after a nice heat soak. I have the same problem with my CR partly gas quality, but it is far less sensitive with cooler weather and a full tank of gas. I think that is the nature of the beast. The hesitation in first sounds like an ecm reflash is needed. Grab the bull by the horns and ask the dealer to confirm your flash version. Insist on the latest and greatest version. |

I'll ask them. Plan on a Erik Buell Racing ecm anyway, but will still ck it |
