I know the manual says 38-42 ft lbs, but doesn't this seem like a low number? Searching for clunking front ends, I came across this post. http://www.hdforums.com/forum/general-harley-david son-chat/534233-what-does-of-bad-steering-head-bea ring-sound-like.html I realize they may have different style of head bearings, but our aren't special. My other bike calls for over 70 ft lbs of torque for the steering stem nut. Am I crazy? My front end still pops, but I can't feel any play and it's not notchy. will torquing the nut more cause damage? | ||

I had steering head problems with my '08 1125R. The bearings are a straight sided bearing. The front end would click/pop when I hit a bump or under braking. HD told the dealer to hang the front end off the lift, loosen all pinch bolts and steering head nut, and then re-tighten everything. They also went 10 ft/lbs past spec on the steering head nut. According to some other mechanics I talked to, this would make a difference only if the bearings were tapered. The click went away for a day then came back. That's when HD gave the dealer permission to change the bearings. Bikes been OK since. Hope this helps. | ||

I took the front wheel off, thinking I could compress the forks by hand to isolate the noise, Ha! Those is some stiff springs! I did rotate the fork tubes and the left tube makes noise, while the right fork does not. I could find no play in the head bearing and I gave them forks some good tugs. My conclusion is the forks are making noise, along with the brakes. |
