Been messing around with my rear shock trying to get it super dialed in, however I'm having trouble deciding if it is getting close to wearing, out or the knobs just dont do what I believe their function is. I have the 3rd recall shock (i believe) As far as I understand, the knob on the remote reservoir is Compression with 4 or 5 available turns(?) this knob is labeled "Tension" on mine, and the knob on the back end mount is rebound with 2 available turns. I just have waaay to much actual jounce in my setup, and the bike floats to hard after hard turns or bumps. Thank you. |

Fox, Usually the seals let go on a shock before the internals wear out. The "clickers" are a fine tuning adjustment. Just for grins you could turn them out all the way, go for a short ride and see what happens then turn them in all the way and ride it again. This would give you an idea what effect they have on ride quality. From the factory service manual for a '97/'98S3T the front fork rebound range is 28 clicks and the factory setting is 12. Front fork compression range is 32 clicks and factory setting is 20. The front fork oil setting is 110mm below the top edge of the fork tube with the spring removed and the fork leg compressed, held vertically. From the instruction sheet for the recall shock the the preload on the spring for a S1 should be 434-442mm bolt center to bolt center with rider aboard. The rear shock factory compression setting is full damping minus 1 turn. The rebound damping is full damping minus 1/2 turn. Full damping in both cases is with the clickers turned in until they stop. Turn them in until they lightly bottom out, don't force them tight as that could do damage. Hope this helped. |

lol. no, it didnt help. haha. I know about the front forks. I asking specifically about the rear. Which "clicker" does what? The one on the remote resevoir seems to do compression, but the one on the rear of the shock seems to do very little. |

The clicker on the reservoir is for rebound, the clicker on the shock body is for compression. |

Some time after the 1997 FACTORY SERVICE MANUALS the COMPLETE SUSPENSION TUNING was left out because the HARLEY-DAVIDSON technicians did not understand it ... Want a copy of SUSPENSION TUNING out of my 1997 S3/S3T FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL, just PM me ... |
