I have the LED bat monitor device from American Sport Bike. Normally I have 1 solid green LED on and the other is flashing at varying speeds. Lately (since I began riding it again after it's been sitting all winter) I only have the 1 solid green LED on with the other flashing very little if at all. Now, when I got home I pull up the diag screen and checked the bat voltage. It shows my voltage at idle as 13.0 volts. When I rev up to 5000 rpm the voltage is 13.6-13.9 volts. This seems a bit low to me. I'm kind of wondering if my VR could be going on me. Been reading a lot about the Mosfet regs and thinking that could be the ticket as I'm not to keen on the stock one. |

I wish I could say that my voltage idled in the 13's. I have an 09. |

My 09 has the same readings. My 08 doesn't have the voltmeter so I can't check that one for you, but it does sound like everything is normal. Typically when above idle you should see 13.7-14.3 Voltage may be a little lower once the fans and everything kick on, they take some power to run. |

My CR idles...from 13.6 to 14.1 At speed...pretty much the same, from 13.4 to 14.3. 13.0 seems a tad low. Just keep a close eye on it. When mine failed, only one segment (of three) failed and showed up at "about" 12.7 as I recall. But jumped right up to the high 13's above about 2500rpm. I was able to make it home fine from work to dig into fixing it. You could actually see...all three segments were different colors of....brown..! You might look into your desired way of fixing it now..before you get stuck with a bike you can't drive. I sprung for fixing it myself. Expensive, but I know who did the work...! Mike |

Does yours idle at 13.6 with both fans running? Mine didn't do that when brand new. |

IMHO, that's better than burning out the charging system that would likely have happened before installing the upgraded system. |

Guys I can tell you this. At 12.3v and traveling at 100-110Kph, outside temp 23 degrees C and CT temp of 82 degrees, you'll get 47Kms before the bike stops like mine. Beautiful balmy autumn day, 300kms of fanastic roads before chug, chug and stop. System light at 11.6v. Totally stopped working at 9.8v and 150kms from home. New stator with new harness lasted 5000kms and 9 months. Everytime I went for a long fang, the output voltage changed. Use to operated b/w 13.6 and 14.1 regardless of temp and idle. Then next idle would be 12.7v. Boogman said it would die and didn't want to believe him. Going to be fixed under warranty but as soon as out the shop, putting in custom rewound 09 stator with lower output. Boogman has one and seems to be working well with/without the harness upgrade. His expired three week before mine. We'll be conducting back to back testing. Stator output around 420 watts with the best wire and triple dipped. Can't do better than that in Oz. Boogman had his regulator tested too and the reg is fine. The really annoying part is the voltage was hovering at 13.3-13.6v all day. There was absolutely no indication it would expired and that sucks. |

The 13 reading was with the fans running. Mine is an 08 which isn't known to have the stator issues. Same VR as you folks though. I've been thinking about upgrading the VR for some time anyways as I hate how the current one operates. |

Ok, test the bike cold. When started with no fans running and cold engine the voltage reads 14.0-14.2. I would say the stator is good with that reading and it's the VR. Seems when it get's hot then it drops. Sigh, think I should upgrade the VR, anyone else agree? Those who've gone to the Mosfet or the PH0012 I think that's the number) VR. How's that working for you? |

I just installed the American Sport Bike voltage monitor too and, from my experience for the last couple days, I would say "No" regarding changing the stock VR because, I believe the lower voltage reading is due to the added load of two fans running at lower rpms. Running at higher rpms is one condition that should result in higher reported volts without the added load of two fans running. So, the stock upgraded charging system should suffice. |

Well, I'm leaning hard towards upgrading the VR on mine just because I really don't trust nor like how the current one works and we all know that it's a weak point on the 08's. I'm looking at the Mosfet style from http://roadstercycle.com . Was wondering if anyone has ordered from them before? Also, for those who have upgraded to the Mosfet style. What are you seeing for voltage ranges at idle or more? |

Two of us in Oz have had an 09 reg on a test bed and independently tested by a Stator Rewinder. There no issues with reg/shunt. Looks like it is a heat issue in the ability of the stator to operate in a hot environment. The view was there is little point in changing the reg. The input to output relation needs to be managed regardless of the type of reg. |

Ryan - if your original numbers were at op-temp, they look OK. The hotter this motor gets, the lower the output... physics. I really don't think you have a problem, sounds just like Loretta, and she's good-to-go. You're in the Air Force, not the Army where they say if it ain't broke, we'll fix it until it is. I have an '09 1125R and my voltage is backwards from what y'all report. My voltage shows to be in the high 13's at idle and when riding in the 4K range on the tach. But during my normal riding with the bike in the 5K+ range, voltage drops to 13.1-13.3. Thankfully, I haven't seen 12's. Do you think this is because fan's etc. kick in at the higher RPM's? Zac, actually, I'm in the Army. We fix it till it's broke. I dunno, only reason I'm considering this is because of others reports after doing this. How their voltage remains in the upper 13-14 ranges after it gets hot. |

The display on the IC is far too slow to react to show the true voltage at any given time. I put a tri-state LED on mine which occassionaly goes "amber" (voltage between 12V and 13.1V) when riding along but the display could be reading pretty much anything at that time. I don't monitor the voltage using the IC, it's just too slow to get a real picture of what's happening in the split-second I choose to look. The LED responds pretty much instantly and ia a better attention grabber. |

That's cool Ryan, Mom, Pop and brother were Army too. I like the tri-state monitor, have one on my Uly that Frank installed in the IC. It is easier to watch than the LED segment meter from Kuryakyn that I put on Loretta and seems to be pretty accurate. I've checked them both against my Fluke and they are good enough. Z |
