That's a stock sporty unit. The screaming eagle one has a flat backplate, two standoffs for the cover to mount to and an oval K&N filter. p/n "26" - interesting I don't think I've seen a RS with an insert from the factory? |

The RS/RSS brochure clearly shows the trim. Here are some excerpts from it:
Haven't gone through my old pics from inside the (old) factory yet... 1313 |

What's it say on it and how can I get one? Anyone find a shop that can rebuild the shocks? WP turned me down, Trackside Engineering rebuilt it but couldn't replace the cracked (and leaking) line for the remote reservoir. |

The parts catalog refers to the trim piece as HD P/N 29111-88, and it appears to still be available from Harley as "XL-1200 air cleaner trim". |

The H-D shift lever is, I think aluminum but polished or even chromed. We did not drill them out. We used what ever one was stock on the Sporty for those years. |

>>>These four holes in my shifter lever wont be factory will they? That would have violated the special "small manufacturer" provision the bikes were manufactured under. I Buell (and Dave will have to confirm this) had WANTED to drill the holes they would not have been allowed to. In terms of replacement, and the wonder of owning one of these, it's a Sportster part and there were over 1,000,000 made so it should be a snap. |

I Buell (and Dave will have to confirm this) had WANTED to drill the holes they would not have been allowed to. I think that the lever would have been OK to modify, we keep it because it worked. We moved around the shaft to allow the rearsets to work. |

>>>I love this thread! And I love Dave. Keeping me on the straight and narrow for going on 3 decades! He's not only smarter than I . . he's got a far better memory! I'm sure . . . just any year now . . . I'll be able to correct his political views and have it straightened out.

Gavin, I just looked at my new, spare muffler and it has five plates, plus the end plate. I think I'm running twenty, plus an open end plate on my bike. Here's a cellphone pic of a pic of mine with the polished Sportster shifter on it- Here it is at Daytona a couple weeks ago(pic by whatever)- (Message edited by Rich on March 23, 2011) (Message edited by Rich on March 23, 2011) |

Looking at an old Buell parts book the air cleaner backing plate is not as i remember it. It pretty much looks like the ones pictured. in '92 the metal adaptor went away and we had a one piece backing plate adaptor made of fiberglass I think. The engines we used meet EPA because we used them unmodified and H-D had already had them certified. I think the rule was that we could touch nothing from the carb mouth to the spot were the exhaust piper entered the engine. The muffler was could be changed but we had to pass the noise rule so we did not have many plates in the Supertrapp. The bikes had to meet all the regulations, we had to buy lights and turn signals that already had DOT certifications. That is how we ended up with Yamaha TS and a Moto Guzzi taillight. The headlight was a stock car light. Being fully legal was an enormous hurdle and Erik took no shortcuts. You can get him pretty riled up talking about all these so-called bike manufacturers building H-D clones without being legal. Fortunately they have mostly gone under or been busted. |

Here's the air cleaner assembly from my '92. Per Josh's description, it's an SE (...and NOT original Buell?):
(Removable) Trim piece says SE, too. |

Those photos look kinda familiar and they seem to correspond with some parts I have floating around in the bottom of an old toolbox. |

Yup, Screaming Eagle aircleaner, which is also the box that Dave posted a pic of earlier. Note the round venturi - that alone made a little difference and Sporty guys were hacking their airboxes and adding that part as a poor-man's SE kit back in the day. I've seen that done in aluminum also, not sure who was making that? |

So it seems all I've seen so far is either the stock Sporty of SE versions of the air cleaner and backing plate assemblies, both with the steel carb support/offset part number 15a in the parts manual (below).
I have yet to see a real part number 23 in the manual and would LOVE to lay my hands on one...or two...or maybe three! Per the manual, that version eliminates (or integrates) parts 15a, 16, 16a, 16b, 16c, 16d, 17, 18, 20, 23a, 23b, and 23c! Pix, anyone? Inventory, anyone? |

Update on Supertrapp discs.... Quoted from the 1990 RS1200 road test in Cycle mag "...and 11 discs instead of the standard 8 in the Supertrapp exhaust." Interesting that the early RS tested was at that time fitted with mild SE cams. I wonder what ever happened to that Blue bike that all the mags tested??? Regards Gavin |

I need to stock up on the older magazine articles as well for those details. I just got confirmation that a '91 RSS is loaded on a truck and heading my way. It's hopefully just a cosmetic restoration VS the tear down '92 RS presents. |

Very cool Dennis! I look forward to pictures when it arrives! I am planning to scan all the RS1200 articles I have so I can send you a set when I work out how to make the PC recoginise the scanner! Including Australian and UK tests which might not be common in the US. Regards Gavin |

We need to coordinate articles. I have a few myself and there's some magazines available on eBay that I was planning on acquiring as reference. A nice collection of articles would be useful. Naturally we'd have to be wary of those pesky copyright issues regarding reproductions! Heaven knows there's FAR too many lawyers out there "practicing". |

I keep forgetting to scrounge my stock a/c backing plate. I know that I have it. My bike did not come with the cover plate. |

Time to bump this back to the top. Here's my newest addition, delivered today. Some may recognize it. I haven't had a chance to really go over it yet in detail, but it's got a steep path back to stock, even from an appearance side. Here's a picture with it's older sibling in the background:
It's a 1991 RSS, originally gunmetal. It came with extra parts, and it's missing key pieces, but the world is round...I'll get there! |

It's an addiction, for sure. The '92 will require a very wide angle lens for a picture, as it's scattered over a very large area currently. I have an intermediate mission to accommodate, but after that, I'll be posting and asking a LOT of questions as I put its engine back together and upgrade running gear, etc. For the '91 I'll probably be checking Airtech and Gustafsson for some pieces...or learning how to make molds! |

Agusta74 Don't mean to thread-jack, but you should get that sweet looking '98 S3 to join your beautiful RS1200. I'm watching it. Regards, Gary |

RS1200 update... New foot pegs arrived from the USA, the ones with the chrome end caps, yet to try fitting them. Bought a set of fork seals as one side has a slight leak. And I have just bought a set of S2T hard saddle bags and rack which will be here later this year and I plan to see if I can modify them to fit to the RS. I got Marzocchi decals for the forks but they are to big so I am going to have some made in the right size. Yet to take it for a good ride. Regards Gavin |
