Thanks guys.
Court I will contact your direct about the bits!
Once I know the exact size if the Marzocchi deals I will try and find someone who might have them and if I can't I will have a batch made.

Gavin
PS attached an arty shot : )

A shot of the air cleaner mount on the RS... a part most people will never see. The RS really looks like a hand built bike when you get under the skin!
I mean that in a good way...

Gavin, I put Hayabusa mirrors on my bike after trying many over the years. They work well and bolt right up.

I ran my fuel line below the header on my bike, turned the inlet to meet it.

Gavin, I am mistaken on the shock tool. Only the WP shocks had the remote adjuster. EFB might have the tools but I rather doubt it. It was just a flat piece of metal laser cut to allow you to twist the shock can.

My memory is a little fuzzy if all RS's and RSS's came equipped with the following, but I do remember having a LOT of spare (unused) parts from these kits leftover and they were definitely used on later RS's and RSS's.

RS AC Kit

GRAND MEMORIES - even if a little fuzzy!

Gavin..The decals on the forks were red..
They were mostly gone...
it did have a closed end cap on the muffler..i cut a hole and welded the deflector as it was making the bike dirty underneath...i totally disassembled the muffler and polished it and put the same amount of discs back in it...The open cap increased noise levels, but that was kewl with me...LOl...Gotta love a twin with a 2inta 1 sound...
I love what yer plannin with the bike by trying to correct it stock wise, but to me, once they are assembled and leave the factory, total originality ends...thus, enjoy the unit to the fullest while TIME permits....We are all only here for a matter of time,so make the best of it bro...Its as kewl of a bike as one could own just as it is....HB

Thanks Hank for the confirmation that the decals were red.

I am not really a huge originality junky, but I know I might seem that way! I just think it's good to know what they were like when they left the factory for historical reasons. I am more then happy to leave the stainless bolts, SE inlet and ignition etc : )

But if I can do some simple small things to get it more original then I will if I can.

The muffler quieting is so I can get it on the road here in NZ.

Attached a pic of the end on the shock.

Regards
Gavin

Gavin: My list of comparable pix is getting longer! I promise to hit the cave by this weekend. I haven't noticed: Does yours still have the A.C.T. hardware?

Interesting picture of the air cleaner mount. My '90 has a Mikuni mount, so it looks nothing like yours, while my '92 has an S&S carb and intake. I figured the air cleaner mount was an afterthought to place the S&S unit in the right spot on the body due to the angled inlet and welds. But from your picture, mine looks the same! Pix to follow...PROMISE!!

This job thing is REALLY getting the way of vehicular projects!

Gavin...
I hear ya Bro...Its fun to be involved with these great bikes..
I have had over 350 bikes, HD & Buells..
...never mind the honda mini trails I did up for kids to learn on...
Original parts are always the way to go as they fit and have had the R&D to make em ,thus they fit..

I did a 1927 Hd and had to make stuff as nothing was available, plus restored a 1965 HD M50 which I sold back to the HD factory for the 100th anniversary..
Originalality is always kewl if its possible...
The shock on that bike I pressume was originally a WP..
It had the 16.5 update on it , but twas a leaker..The shock on it now was a used one the I had in inventory that was in good shape...
I run a trapp on my s2t with the same spout type end cap with 18 discs..
It sounds great, but prob dont pass noise laws...LOl...
I like it tho...
Anyhow, Bro, if theres anything else on my end I can answer, feel free to ask....
TTYS..Hb

Hank! I had assumed the shock was factory original. Please tell me more! What is a 16.5 upgrade? Was the one you replaced original do you still have it? etc etc lol : )

I thought the original shock was a Works Performance unit? But I don't know when they changed to the White Power units.
In my parts book the WP shock is part number K0410.5 and in my build sheet is says "shock absorber K0400.4"

Attached a better pic if whats on the bike now.
Regards
Gavin

Just to add to the pool of information... the photocopy of the 1990 hand book says....

"The rear suspension features a Works Performance single shock.... A finned aluminum reservoir is provided"

But when did they change them?

Hank, what can you tell me about the tyres?
Were they on it when you got it? Just trying to work out how old and hard they will be! They are both the wrong sizes, front is a 110/70 and should be a 120/70 and the rear is a 180/55 and should be a 170/60.... so if they are old as well I will replace them. I found a 0602 on the rear and 226 on the front which might mean 2002 and 2006 build dates??
regards
Gavin

Gavin..
In any pics of i have seen of a 90 Rs, they had the WP , 16.5" shock on them..The one with the white exposed spring..My S2t had one as well, but they were recalled and replaced withthe showa like what is on the RS now..They then did a few more showa updates arriving at the 14.75" model..
The Rs had a 16.5 showa on it when i got it..i just replaced it with a good one .
The tires were on the bike when i got it..Not sure of age..
i pressume it woulda had dunlop d205 sportmax tires originaaly..
120/70/ZR17 & 170/60/ZR17...
Court would be able to tell you brand for sure..
No, i dont have the showa shock which was on it..I gave it to a fleea BWBer who wanted parts...
its nice to see photos of it from you..The bike is still nice and clean, and it brings back memmories of redoing it from a bare frame up to its state now..
i can RE: certain things when i see the pics...
It had STD heads, big top pistons, lumpy andrews cams..
One of the valve guides was so loose it was falling out of the head when taken apart..im suprised it ran when i got it..
thats why it has NOS heads and pistons, back to stock cams....I think i left the adjustable pushrods in it tho..
Im not sure about the front antidive..
It seemed like it worked...
Did Orest give you the 2 new fork tube caps?
I was lucky to find those new....The old ones were starting to strip in the thread were the anti dive bolts went in..
Thats it for todays memory...LOL..
Hows yer weather there?
No quakes affecting you?
We still have 4ft snow, now its raining, and around +4 celcius..
messy and bone chill weather...
Hard on my old bones....LOL..Hb

The exposed spring WP shock first appeared on the 5 speed bikes along with the upside down WP forks. Prior to that Work Performance did the shocks and Marzzochi the forks.

Dunlop was the OEM tire. Erik knew Jim Allen from his racing days and they gave us OEM pricing on the tires, that saved us a 100 bucks a bike.

From an request on the Ducati Bevelhead group I was directed to the Marzocchi fork decals on ebay in the UK. I have bought two sets. Their are more their.
I can't say anything about quality until they arrive.

If that link fails as I expect it might then search this auction number 360154000573

Pic from auction attached.

Hank. Thanks again for the new information.
I am quake free here in the very north of New Zealand. AND warm, it's semi tropical here in the north. I got the fork caps from Orest.
I am confused about the shocks, I think so many where changed after being delivered it's hard to go from photos. I have a bunch of period road tests here that show the enclose Works Performance shocks on the 1990 RS1200.
Regards
Gavin

Dave. Thanks for that information.

So now I am after the correct enclosed Works Performance shock for my bike. I know they were not perfect in their day, but I can have it rebuilt so it will work better.

Anyone have a shock for sale?? Any condition.
Or even an original that I can get good photos of and any identifying marks so I know what I am looking for.

Regards
Gavin

The bike has one of the earlier 16.5 showa shocks which they used till they updated to the 14.75 showa shocks..

Somewhere in there they tried a collar kit on the early 16.5 showas too...

my 1995 S2 had a wp shock on it when new..it was recalled and a new shock, enclosed 16.5 showa, and swingarm were installed..
My 1996 S2t had the 16.5 showa, and I changed it to the updated 14.75 version..
some of these were changed out by warranty if the 16.5 puked on em in a time period situation..
i think the 14.75 showa is the superoir of em all..but the exposed spring versions looked the kewlest..
And Gavin, the shock that is on the bike was a low mile take off, my 1996s2t..
Just my view...Hb

Gavin:

I'll be on my mission later today with my camera. Are there any other items I can assist in regarding equipment? I can't confirm what is and isn't original on my bike, but I can document what's on it now. I'm sure the folks here can then let us BOTH know.

Thanks again Hank for the shock info, it's all starting to become clear now!

Steeleagle... at this stage some nice general shots would be cool, and if you think your shock is a Works Performance then a bunch of that.

I have found the best pictures of shocks on 1990 RS1200 machines, these are Works Performance shocks I think.

Gavin
