Author Message   Pmjolly Posted on Wednesday, March 16, 2011 - 11:08 pm:        I removed my front wheel for the first time last night. I have the factory service manual, and read every step carefully. I then did my own thing. I started off by applying masking tape to the wheel, as I was planning on experimenting, and I did not want to scar the finish. I took off the front fender, then removed the front axle. I read somewhere on this board that it was possible to simply lift the wheel and brake rotor up and out of the brake caliper towards the rear, then back out towards the front over the caliper. You would not have to remove the caliper. I never could make that work. I ended up taking out the caliper mounting bolts, then rotating the fork, and dropping the caliper off the rotor. I bolted the caliper back onto the now twisted fork finger tight instead of hanging it by a wire like most people. I have both wheels off for new tires. The back has a Pitbull stand holding the swingarm. I put the rear axle back in and placed my floor jack under the axle as a backup, just in case. I've tried this trick but I could not turn the wheel far enough to the left to enable the front tire to clear the muffler as I move the front wheel backwards. I don't have the Pitbull for the front, and I have an aftermarket exhaust. I prefer the stem stand, but it can be done with an "under the forks" stand as well. You will just have to twist and wedge a bit.   Boogiman1981 Posted on Thursday, March 17, 2011 - 03:08 pm:        hung my from the rafters and was able to take front wheel out without taking the caliper off. no new damage to finish on either the caliper or the wheel. slight twist and a solid push back to the muffler and she pops right out.   Rogue_biker Posted on Thursday, March 17, 2011 - 03:55 pm:        I have the stem stand from Pitbull. I have not ever had any problem as long as I loosen the pinch bolts before lifting the front. What is this about the "twist and wedge"? But whenever I try to turn the handlebars to the left (so I can move the front wheel backwards past the front of the muffler), I can only turn a bit before the wheel hits the stand legs. I try to move the stand to the left as well but then the bike wants to topple over from the rear stand. Maybe I just need to be more forcefull when I turn the handlebars and front stand to the left. Rotate the bottom of the fork leg or just remove the 2 bolts holding the caliper.   Coolice Posted on Thursday, March 17, 2011 - 07:30 pm:        We take the wheel on and off in less than 45 seconds during pit stops..... Yes you can use the Pit Bull stem style stand. You need to remove the caliper and take the wheel out the front. Only reason to turn is to get the axle loose and remove it. I plan to do something very similar with my 1125r... where are you attaching the straps? Lower fork tree? fork tubes? Around the frame neck? Upper fairing and windshield ere not a problem? Thanks!!
