I have been reading Hell's Angels by Hunter Thompson and this quote was in the book. In light of recent events I thought I would share it with all of you. I think most of you can and will relate I know I have. "... The Edge... There is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over. ...if I remember correctly, the HA's took Thompson to an edge alright...and left him face down in a pool of his own edginess. He was one lucky bastard, and continues to be so secluded in his mountain hide. ...within arms reach, "Song Of The Sausage Monster" from Art Of The Motorcycle exhibition book. Someday, if he ever shows up here, I'll get it autographed. | ||

Yeah... I think it was written pre-916. But do what Buckinfubba says... put the book down... no pictures!!! LOL So I'm not the only one who checks to see if there are pictures in a book before reading it? | ||

Not having read all the material referenced, but knowing a little about each, I assumed that in this case "The Edge" meant pushing yourself to attain your personal best and that falling (or failing) in the the process was the moment of truth, self-realization and a true learning experience for future growth. | ||

Nev...from what I've read about HST, if it didn't kill him he may have learned not to do that again... I'm feeling that you may be a little too 'Zennish' or too altruistic or Laura Engler Wilderish for HST mode... ...didja catch that part about the Kaw 750 and acid, riding through Beverly Hills... HST is closely associated with excessive drug and alcohol consumption leading to near death experiences... ...if not under the influence, he's often guided by his massive ego, self delusions and a fine gift for turning words into the fantastic visions and experiences only HST could convey. what about "those damn bats...." And who could forget the 4 wheel drift section of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas great stuff BTW the Ducati people chose to send HST a 900SS over a 916, its in the article Which we had – no doubt about that. The Ducati people in New Jersey had opted, for reasons of their own, to send me the 900SP for testing – rather than their 916 crazy-fast, state-of-the-art superbike track racer. I was living in a rooming house (502-1/2 South Crawford - Ft. Scott, KS), working on a transmission line job (LaCynge to Stillwell - 345kV) and spent my evenings reading Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas as it came out in segments in Rolling Stone. I had a bit of a wake up call when the powerline showed up on the cover of this months Transmission and Distribution magazine as "old and in desperate need of rebuild". More interesting is that some old cronies replaced the wire WHILE the line was energized at 345,000 volts. And you wonder why motorcycling is relaxation to me?  Great times.... Court | ||

Henrik, I had Doctor Thompson in mind, but I'm sure you and Court are quite capable of getting into just about anything and extracting yourselves with minimal damage. And in the modified words of HST "...As you lawyer, I'd advise you to dispose of the tape and pass the ether..." | ||

HST is a great writer, with a keen eye . . .it would be nice to see him remove his makeup and do some more . .. . . I think he is in danger of turning into a toothless ol' dog if'n he don't watch it! I'm a huge fan, but it's disappointing to read much of his recent stuff | ||

er, because when he was writing about that stuff, it was cool in many circles . . . .also, he may have exaggerated a little (I know that's true, in any event) he's a strong believer in the Mark Twain theory of not letting the truth get in the way of a good story | ||

I think Hunter sometimes uses the "It coulda happened like that" philosophy. |
