Just in case it helps (or hinders!) other RS owners I have attached two pics. The white line is where my fuell line went, the red is where I have placed the new one.
It's a lot further away from the header pipe than it looks as it comes out towards the fairing.
The other pic is the new one.

Hey guys! Thanks for the gentlemanly compliments. I appreciate your kind thoughts.
Just a few remarks for you....The ignition switch is new. The dealer thought it might be a problem with the cutting out issue. The solenoids are new as well. I got them from EFB because I figured in for a penny, in for a pound...so there may be nothing wrong with the originals which I think were in the box I sent. I put lots of fuel stabilizer in the tank when I stored the bike and ran it for awhile so that the stabilizer circulated through the fuel lines.
Hope that helps, Gavin.

Agusta74, it does sound a lot like vapor lock. I had something similar on my S2T. It would just died slowly like it was running out of gas. It did this on any ride over 10 miles. I rerouted and wrapped the fuel line in that high temp shielding that they use on race cars and no help.

There was no backfiring or anything. It turned out to be the intake seals. The symptoms were not indicating a intake seal because there were no backfires but that is what it turned out to be.

It is something you may want to consider if it is still doing it but hope it is cured with the fuel line re-route.

Frank

Thanks for that input Frank.
I was thinking along the very same lines until I read the bill sheet from the bike shop in Canada and they did the intake seal, carb seal, oring, diaphram and enricher and clamps plus the ignition switch etc about 350 miles ago.
I hope to road test it tonight and see if it's cured!
Regards
Gavin

I got the bike running again after redoing the fuel line. Started and ran well, was getting gas to the carb for sure. I did a few miles around the local streets and only once when I slowed down and pulled the clutch in it died, and I flicked it onto reserve and it restarted... it might have restarted anyway, I am not sure.
It idles well, which is a good sign.

Time for a longer road test tomorrow!
After such a long time without running it really needs a couple of good rides to get everything to settle again.

Being an Italian bike nut I was pleased to see Italian bits on the bike! Grimeca rear brake reservoir and maybe master cylinder, Marzocchi forks and I suspect triple clamps, and a CEV tail lamp!

When I had it in the sun today (being a spray painter) I noticed the paint on the left hand side of the seat has been touched up in the past... most likely damage from a saddle bag? So the paint is not as mint and original as I thought it was which is good in a way in that I can use the bike without worrying to much about a few stone chips etc.

Regards
Gavin and number 59

Your spot on with the Italian parts. The steering stem is Italian also. We bought an entire pallet full of those taillights so they were used for many years.

Early on we bought the parts through Cosmopolitan Motors in New Jersey; they distributed many Italian bikes. When they ran out taillights we had to go to CEV and the only way they would sell them to us was a full pallet at a time. Must have been 200 lights.

Gavin..
I did some touch ups to the bike with a touch up bottle and brush..I used a chrysler paint..it was very close...You should see some dabs on the fairing front as well..I do believe I repainted the insides of all with flat black paint..
Just a thought on the cutting out..
I did replace the ignition sensor and module..Sometimes when a sensor or module warms up, they cut out...Even tho they were new, doesnt rule out defects...
Just a thought if you still have a cut out issue...
Otherwise its looking great bro...
I hope to get the bolts sent out today..Hb

Gavin: Pictures of the pegs for my '90 RS below. This is what's on the bike now, the folding aluminums:

Aluminum pegs

My '90 is an RS in RSS clothing, as done by a previous owner, so it has no rear pegs.

Here's the rubber pegs that came along in a box. It might not be clear in the picture, but the end caps are polished steel/chrome.

rubber pegs

FWIW: My '92 has the aluminum pegs on both the front AND rear.

Hank: I ment a re sprayed touch-up on that area where a saddle bag would touch and about the same length. It was all but invisible until I got the light in the right (or wrong!) direction then I could see it. It's an occupational hazard to see all paint faults... most people would never see!

Gavin...
The bike may have had a throw over bag on it at one time..
The chrome end caps on those pegs were and prob still are an HD acessorie item..
I do believe if you look at the photo from BC, the bike had the squishy type on it, just like my S2t did when new..
I sent you a PM in regards to the bolts...they are on the way to ya..4-6 weeks...

Hank: Thanks for the HD part number for the pegs. I have a couple of pairs ordered and on their way.

I have just been looking into EFB Designs... would I be anywhere near right in thinking that this might be mostly Court hunting through boxes in his shed?

I would be interested in knowing what might still be available for the RS as I do not intend selling it and I would like bits to keep it running.

Gavin

Gavin:
The pegs with the chrome caps have no marking, stampings...nothing on them to identify them.

Aluminum VS rubber: Note that the parts catalog implies the aluminums were RSS, rubber for RS.

I have a pair of the pegs that look (a little) like the anti-vibes with part tags on them: 50785-98YA (left) and 50786-98YA (right). One is tagged HD, the other Buell. Both with tag dates of 7/10/00. Doesn't look like as much "meat" as the anti-vibe pegs via Onahog, though, and my catalogs show they were for M2s, X1s and S3s

left peg

right peg

Keys: I have keys for both the steering lock and gas cap for my '92:

Buell Keys

The left is steering lock, middle ignition (marked HD), right is gas cap. (The Walmart key is probably not original!! LOL!)

Does anyone here have an RS with Marzocchi forks that still has the original vertical Marzocchi decals on it? I would be interested in it's size and a good close up picture if at all possible. All I have is to go on is the attached pics from magazine road tests. I am sure they will be available from Italian parts dealers it's just knowing exactly what to ask for.

Agusta, I really don't think that AC backing plate is what we used. I remember them being very lightly modified SE parts. I don't remember ever taking stock production ones and filling them with holes.

Perhaps Brankin will log in and have a comment.

FOOTPEGS

The first RS were the simple black rubber ones. I can't recall if we ever installed the anti-vibe ones as stock or just suggested them to folks bothered by the vibration in the pegs. This story may be the reverse as I think about it, stock chrome????

The chrome caps may have been used interchangeably with the plain. i don't remember but it sounds like something we would do if P&A was out of the plains.

The aluminum ones were done for the first RSS bikes sent to Japan. They were not folding. We offered folding ones as accessories and they may have gone on later bikes as stock. Don't think any 4 speed bikes would have had them as stock.

The first batch of these were knurled to our spec and Erik figured out that the knurling was too sharp. He spent several hours on a bike and wore a hole into the bottom of his boot! We have to add an operation to take the edge off of them.

KEYS
The fork lock is indeed a Harley part, not sure if it is still available or not BUT I recall having a hard time getting keys. You will need the H-D part number and your key number. Likely your number will confuse people and if it does the dealer may have to call P&A and actually talk to a person. I recall it being easy to remove the whole lock IF you have the key.

Blanks should be available somewhere so you can get copies. I think another MC company used these same locks, perhaps BMW????

the fuel cap key? Those caps came from a small company in London whose name escapes me. EFB Design may have blanks. I don't think H-D will have any idea what you are talking about.

Actually speaking of EFB Design, how does that work these days? Is Erik Buell Racing handling these parts?

Ignition key should be available from H-D, they were stock H-D items. If you have to give them a VIN then some tap dancing will be required as the Buell Motor Company are not in the H-D database AFAIK.

Have fun.

Some more questions!

1. From the parts book... why did the RSS1200 get a oil cooler? Does the RS1200 need one?
2. Did my 1990 come with a tool kit?
3. I assume the Supertrapp muffler had a full solid end cap from the factory? How may exhaust discs did they have as delivered?
4. The hand book talks about a adjuster tool for the shock? Can I get one somewhere?

Regards
Gavin

Here is another pic of the Marzocchi decal on a 1990 RS1200. This one in white!
I guess the Italians would have supplied whatever they had to hand? All the others I have seen have been red. Hank do you remember if their were any remains of the decal when you got it??

the oil cooler and tool kit were part of the RSS because the Japanese distributor wanted them. You order a container full of bikes from a company trying to build 100 bikes in a year and you get what you want. The oil cooler was not needed on the stock motors. EFB Design may have the wrench available but it was for the original shock, it looks like you have the remote preload adjuster so don't need a tool.

Yes the ST had a solid end cap and I don't remember how many plates, not many, perhaps 8? More make it louder

Gavin:
I haven't made it to the man cave yet, but I'll get better pix of the Marzocchi log with appropriate sizing in case you want to pursue reproductions.

I can also see what my '90 has re; Supertrapp...and assume it's the original configuration (???).

My '92 is lacking a muffler, so I've been looking at the Supertrapps to fill the space with originality. That need is a little further down the road for that project, however.

Give me a couple of days to get to the workshop and take pix, unless someone beats me to it here.
