I am really enjoying this thread. Just a great looking bike, I am so glad it went to yet another great Bueller. I do not think I will ever see enough pictures of these bikes. Frank |

Gavin... Got the PM and will get the bolts on the go.. i had given Orest the OEM a/c backplate along with some misc used parts from the resto..brake pads, ign box,new fork caps etc... The a/c back on there now is a screamin eagle version.. The oem was a stock sportster one that I pressume Buell modified by drilling holes and cutting pieces of plastic from it.. Take the A/C off sometime and see the kewl Buell adapter to carb.. Orest got OEM with the bike... I had gotten those manuals etc from EFB when I bought some parts...I believe copies were only avalable.. You may check on the build sheet for the key #s for the bike...Im not sure if they were on the sheet tho...Court? i also gave Orest all the reciepts etc for the parts i purchased from EFB , ebay etc.. I hope you got this info as It proves what all was done to it by Me parts wise.. You will also note the Buell stickers on the swing arm...They were given to me by Court at Road America in 1998, and the one on the front was from the Buell demo in Sturgis a few years ago.. The chain guard and plastic deflector were new parts from EFB as well...I actually loved the way Erik modified the sporty chain guard etc to work HIS way for HIS bike design.. Thats what makes these bikes ,as well as S2/Ts models so unigue... And Ya Mon, "We own the Corners"..... LOL........ TTYS.....Hankb...

Id still like to no how that bike made it into canada for sure..i pressume a military guy did it..but dont know for sure..I tried to buy a new one in 1991, but they didnt pass Cdn DOT specs.. It did have some HA club affiliation at one time , I was informed @ my purchase from British Columbia, Canada... If it could only tell us where all it has bin eh.. Source it man, ya may find out even more.. Try running the Vin # on the net...Hb |

My very weak memory as that we used a SE air cleaner backing plate that we modified just a little to allow the breathers and such to work. I don't remember using a stock one, too restrictive and because the exhaust exited on the left we could pass noise regs with the SE one. A Harley could not do this. Also the EPA rules started at the carb mouth and ended at the exhaust port we could allow the motor to breath a better and make a bit more power. |

Dave... The air cleaner back plate that was on it was a stock HD sporty one full of holes, snorkel cut off etc..some one may have done it, but it looked like more of a production type mod than an at home butcher job...if Gavin got it, or Orest has it, maybe they could post a photo..Hb |

Hank; Yes Orest gave me everything he had with the Buell including some work he had done on it. He was very good to deal with, one of lifes true gentlemen. I have a airclearner backing here but I know bugger all about HD bits so to me it might as well be a moon rock!!! lol I will get a picture done. Thanks for the Craigs list pics... are their more of them? Also do you have a pic of you with the bike at all? I got Orest to have one taken. Speaking of photos.... is their a place on the net where pictures of the 443 Buell Motor Company bikes have been or could be collected? If not then I will start one. I have a flicker account I could use. Battery should be charged now!!! Got gas in it, just need battery and oil Regards Gavin Regards Gavin |

Oh and the keys... my Build schedule says the Steering lock key is BA35212 and the Fuel cap is 194. Can I still go to HD with those numbers or will they look at me like I have two heads? From the Build sheet the date completed is 3/30/90 so it's going to have it's 21st birthday in 3 weeks! I might have to throw it a small party with very silly hats all around Regards Gavin |

Gavin: Re; Steering lock: My dealer cross-checked the Buell number from the parts manual and the 48140-84A was allegedly the HD cross-reference number. They say it's still available, but I haven't placed an order yet. I'll need at least two if I want to have that feature. Re; Manual: Your '92 manual cover looks like my '89, except mine is yellow. I'll try and schedule some time at the scanner, if for no other reason than for giggles. I'll pass it to whomever might want an electronic version. You'll have to pardon the smudges. To everyone else: My RS's have all been "massaged" in one way or another, so I'm taking copious notes from all the historical comments! None have the original A/C and the SE unit is good info to start with for getting them as close to original as I can. |

Just some further info I have gathered about the air cleaner mounting thing... The parts book does not list an HD part number. But it does say that they changed mid 1992... quote "These parts used prior to the change to a one piece air cleaner backing plate and carb support in mid 1992" The one in my pictures has C'CASE and "?VAP" in raised letters on the engine side. In my build book action 310 is "air filter backing plate P0214.3 modify" Interesting stuff I hope can help someone. Regards Gavin |

Gavin..yes, thats the a/c that came on it.. If you search RS1200 in around may -aug 2008 on here you should find more pics and info from me.. I will look into what i have.. Just off a memory note and picture glance, ...The front footpegs should be the larger squishy HD type if you want originality..Hb Ps...yes, Orest was a true honest gentleman with the purchase from me as well.. |

So much for going back to work this afternoon! lol I have just spend the last hour looking into the footpegs. My parts book (1992 book for RS and RSS) lists three types of foot pegs. (nothing is ever simple) "Aluminum folding", "aluminum non-folding" and "footpeg" which has the same part number as the rears of N502.3 In my build book it mentions fitting the rear pegs and calls them 502.3 but I can't find referance to the fronts! So my best guess is the same pegs front and back on this bike might be correct??? Regards Gavin |

Give me a couple days . . . I'm absolutely swamped with work, a mid-term to give to a bunch of fertile minds tomorrow night and trying to pack before 1am and get 3 hours sleep. I'll be keeping up with the thread even if I seem a bit scarce . . just wanted to let you know I hadn't tuned out. Dave Gess can speak to the keys and perhaps provide help sourcing. I have some keys here if you need photos or mfg. I'm loving this thread. These things evoke pure passion. |

rrrrrrr... the pegs on the bike(s) in the early magazine tests are the same small folding pegs with small rubbers front and back.... BUT they have metal ends where mine are just rubber. Maybe I just need the correct rubbers with metal ends?? Regards Gavin PS about to go and fit the battery... |

Parts #58, #61 and #62 are the front pegs. #64 is the rear passenger peg in the parts book. The rear passenger peg shows as the 502.3 number. Re; Work: Don't worry about it. It's severely overrated...even if it does pay for the toys! |

...and I blew the lock/key thing. I was chasing the whole assembly WITH keys, not just keys. Replacement keys would be an easier path to follow if they can be had and cut. |

I'll hit the Bat Cave tomorrow and take pics of the pegs I have. My '90 has the aluminums, but I also have the rubber ones in a box, or on the '92. Maybe it'll just muddy the water a bit more! |

"Parts #58, #61 and #62 are the front pegs. #64 is the rear passenger peg in the parts book. The rear passenger peg shows as the 502.3 number." In my book part #58 is also part number N0502.3 the same as #64. regards Gavin |

Well, I got it running tonight but I have some issues! It surprised me and fired right up after only 2 seconds of turning over. I left it for an hour then restarted it fine and took it for a short ride around the industrial estate I live in.... it seemed to be running great, idling, reving, pulling past 4000rpm in the first 2 gears with ease... then it just lost power and stopped. Turned over fine. But would not restart. Consistent "flat" noise when trying to start. Lucky I was UP hill from home... coasted home. Left it for half an hour and it started just but after fluffing around with the choke and throttle positions a bit. It had not run in two years... I suspect crap in the carb or lines? Opening the gas cap did not help. Anything I should look at first??? Anything particular to these bikes?? Regards Gavin |

Pegs and Parts Book: Yep. #64 for the rear pegs and #58 for the front show as N0502.3. But mine also shows #60 (N0402,8QQ - Aluminum, non-folding RSS Japan only) and #61 (N0402.7QQ, folding Aluminum), for the front pegs only. Re; Running: I had trouble getting mine to run at first after sitting for ? years with the PO. First there was no fuel getting to the carb due to bad wiring to the fuel tank solenoids, and there are two. Yours started, so unless you're low on fuel and/or the reserve valve didn't open (switch on the left side of the tank), I'd go with carb gum. When I got the solenoids figured out it would run, but only when on enrichment (choked). I became quite good at pulling the carb off after many episodes to find and clean another jet ...and the (non-stock) Mikuni on mine has more jets than an air force. Does it re-start if you remove the air cleaner and shoot fuel directly into the carb? Basics: Fuel and spark? I haven't ridden my '90 any distance or speed yet. By the time I got the basic fueling issue squared away late last year, the ground and streets were white, and the weather hasn't been overly cooperative since! But the short test I did have indicates I may have some other issues, as it did NOT seem to want to pull at lower revs. More to follow, perhaps this weekend! You are motivating me! |

2.06am... girlfriend asleep so time to work on the bike! I pulled the aircleaner off. Found the line for fuel to enter the carb and removed the carb end. Turned on the key, heard the solenoid click but no gas at the carb end of the line. In fact the end of the line was totally dry. I think I was running on what was in the carb bowl only. So I pulled the other end of that same line from the lines coming from the solenoid and turned the key on and petrol pissed out. So it looks like the fault might have been a crimped fuel line, or an air lock? The line seems to go very high before coming down to the carb? I have just looked at some pictures of other RS machines with bodywork off and it looks like they have fuel line that run lower. Mine goes up over a frame tube and down tight past the rocker box to the carb. It has a fuel filter in the line up it looks and blows free. I think air lock and crimp combination might be the problem. I will make a new fuel line that goes more direct and see what happens. Regards Gavin |

Yup, same line hooked up to the solenoid outlet and left hanging down and when the key was turned on petrol flowed freely. That black plastic 90 degree fitting that the fuel line clamps to on the carb, that goes into the carb, can I turn that or is it fixed in that position? ie glued into the carb body? Regards Gavin 2.54am |

I can't help with original hose routing, so hopefully someone else can chime in. I need to know as well. But since you mentioned it, I had the identical situation with air in my fuel line! In fear of any crap in the fuel tank getting into the carb, I installed a small in-line filter, a clear one so I could watch the fuel flow that wasn't there previously. There WASN'T a filter there previously and I wasn't sure if there was one in the tank or not. I'd turn the key on, hear the solenoid click and watch the fuel filter fill. The bike would start and I'd watch the fuel level flowing through the filter get smaller and smaller until the engine would die. I had to "burp" the fuel line by cracking it open to restore flow. So as a temporary condition (I think!) I installed a line "vent" with a 90 degree "T" in the line from the tank to the carb. Naturally the vent line had to run higher than the tank, otherwise I was cleaning up fuel on the floor. It allowed fuel to flow and bike to run, but it raised some questions for me: Do these bike HAVE fuel filters originally? Where are they placed? I'm now curious about the 90 degree fitting you speak of. Maybe when they put on the Mikuni on mine they messed up a good thing! |

I have answered my own question again... I DID turn the plastic 90 degree fitting for the fuel to enter the carb.... small vice grips and care did it. Line modified and refitted with a more natural flow to it. The line now goes behind the knee pad to the carb rather than up and down again past the rocker. It's still well away from the header pipe. I am not sure but I think the way it was would have stopped the last of the fuel leaving the tank as the fuels pressure would have been overcome by the climb in the line... might explain why the bike shop that worked on it last commented in their notes on the bill that the reserve did not work. It does now! 3.42am Bed time, will fire it up tomorrow and try again. Regards Gavin |

Gavin....All the fuel system worked when i had finished it...i added a small filter as the internal screens werent too good anymore...i had it all apart and coated the gas tank...Orest had a problem with it cutting out as well, and I told him to change the ignition switch...it had wiggly issues in it...i connected it light on all the time and solved the problem while i had it..maybe the switch is still to blame...The fuel rocker switch was a new EFB part..along with the decal.. The larger rubber pegs were the same used on sporties and s2 models...The smaller are far more user friendly and look better, thus 4 new ones were installed by me... Court maybe able to define this further.. Good ta hear you got er ta speak for ya... Enjoy...Hb |

My cutting out did not feel like ignition switch, it was that soft "your out of gas die out". On the bill from the dealer in Canada that Orest went to they have the cost of a replacement ignition switch. They also mention this... "m/c quits after 30km, wont start for 20 minutes" Which sounds a lot like vapor lock. They replaced a lot of things in the carb area. I think that having that long fuel line running up a long way and into what would be a hotter area right against the rocker cover, with less air flow as well as having it in a black outer protective tube would all add up to the line over heating after a long ride. I have made it shorter and given it a more natural downward run to the carb. I might wrap it in tinfoil to keep the heat away from the line, just as an extra guard against heat. Where I live it's a lot warmer than Canada!!! Regards Gavin |
