So I've got a base coat of white pearl on the frame and Flexiglass bodywork. Tomorrow I pick up a solo tail from Catalyst Composites and will get that base coated as well.
Now I'm going to load the pics in Photoshop and work on the graphic design. I'm thinking along the lines of my American Flag street bike, but a macro version, like the bike is wrapped in a huge flag. I've never painted anything before, so w'll see how it goes.

Not a fan of the white R. I may change my mind cause that white frame is outstanding can't wait to see the final product.

Gorgeous bikes. But I want to stay with the flag theme of my other bike.

I went white on my race bike last year, I really liked it.
Mine was just a rattle can job that I did multiple coats with wet sanding each one. Turned out pretty well.

I'm not sure what it will be this year, I'm getting some bodywork that is already painted red, so it may be red for at least part of the season.

I like that a lot Rob. I am also a fan of your streetbike scheme. That looks kind of ambitious for a first time paintjob, unless you have some airbrush skills.

Actually, that paint job should be relatively easy to pull off, even without great airbrush skills. All he needs to do is do a good job masking the areas before applying paint. It'll take a few days to complete it - I would suggest waiting at least 8 hours curing time between layers of paint... You'll want that long before applying the mask down for a different area (I've rushed it, and I've ran into "picking" problems where the mask can lift up small specks of paint making it look chipped).

Take your time and good luck RodRob!!!

p.s. it's tough to highlight red by going lighter -- it's easier to shade using darker reds or a very diluted transparent black.

I would advise against 'flash' paint jobs on race bikes, simply because if you race you will crash at some point : (

A simple monotone paint job is much easier to fix and 'bodge' if necessary without looking too bad. If you have to replace just one panel then it is much easier to match it to the others with a plain paint job.

Increasingly popular over here is 'wrapping' race bikes in vinyl rather than painting them. They look really good and the finish is as good or better than paint on 'glass. Price is cheaper compared to a complicated paint job too and if you damage a a part you just 're-wrap' it : )

These are the leaders in the UK for this service but I'm sure there must be many in the US as well.

I looked into wraps and it is a little cheaper than having it painted, but I would still have to make the graphics. The big advantage is crash repair, which is a lot cheaper and quicker since you just reprint the damaged part.
But, I am really having fun learning about painting. There is sooo much to learn. There is a lot of airbrush work in this; shadows and highlights. I picked one up for the first time today. I'm sure I will screw it up many times before I get it right: if ever.
I'm in a kind of Zen mode right now. Kind of like a Samurai forging his own sword prior to battle. I believe that even machines absorb something when you put yourself into them. This will be my race bike. there may be others like it, but this one is mine.
Plus I've kind of become the flag bike guy at the track, so WTF.
Thanks for the good vibes and suggestions.
