So here I am at the cafe next to the freeway waiting for my wife to come pick me up, kids in toe. What an emasculating experience on such a liberating ride. Anyways, life is full of highs and lows. Upshifting from first to second, it sounded like someone dropped a wrench in my engine. No power, no shifting into gear. Throttle response good, engine sounded ok, so I coasted the rush hour gauntlet to the shoulder. Sigh..... oh well. All recall service done on bike and she's under warranty, just nervous about what they'll find. Anyone have similar experience? Do share |

Would it shift with the bike turned off? The upside is they will probably replace the whole motor, the downside is it will take a while. |

My question is did the wife pick you up to have a good laugh about you and "your bad ass bike" or does she understand.... I just ask cause i usually get the "good laugh" when my toys break. |

Lol, no I was having a bad day/week, so my wife was kind. Just got the bike home and noticed something missing.....my belt drive. Lol, yeah its been that kind of day. Put the bike on the stand, ran it in 1st and second, smiled and turned it off. I feel like a tard, but I'm a happy tard. |

LOL. That might be the best post I've ever seen here. Good news. Definitely better than a bad tranny. |

Do me a favor and pull your lower belt guard. Take a close look at the inside aluminum plate... did it appear to have snagged the belt? |

Haha I agree a Happy Tard is much better than a " my bike has to be in the shop for how long..." Angry Tard. Hope that's the last time it happens. |

So the belt failed? I had a similar thing happen to me when a big allen bolt, located near the belt behind the primary pulley cover, came undone and started to rub the belt. I was riding down a mountain road then all of a sudden there was a loud whirring, whining sound! I pulled over immediately. I was sure something went bad with the transmission and I had $$ signs popping in my head. The thought of calling a tow truck, taking bike to dealer, then calling the wife to take me home, it was all very uncomfortable especially since I was 150 miles from home. Thankfully it was just that loose bolt and we tightened it up. All's well that ends well as my good friend always says. I'm glad it was just a belt failure. Would be nice to know if you knew what caused the failure though. |

Sometimes they just fail. Had one on my XB go. Glad to hear it's minor! R |

I just saw it on the side of the road on my ddrive home (crazy rush hour traffic prevents its recovery today) it was not shredded, it was just ripped straight accross. Hmph. Still ont know what to think. I think it was the original belt, does 14k seem like an old belt? It looked ok..... |

14K, not at all old. I have about 48,000 miles on belt driven buells and not one failure. track days and aggressive street riding included. |

Some people get 6 miles, some people get 60,000 miles. They break whenever they feel like it. |

So did you have the belt guards on there? Our belts develop a lot of slack at wide open throttle. I've stood right next to the bike on the dyno with no belt guards, wish I'd taken a video. |

As long as we're on the subject, here's one of the threads I've kept that covers a lot of good belt info.. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/290 431/440981.html If you've not read it you'll find it helpful. |

I thought these belts lasted 100k miles? Just saying.....if there should be a replacement interval, we should know when. I may just replace mine after my little adventure with the allen bolt rubbing against the belt for about 200 feet. |

They break whenever they feel like it. Just saying I have had 3 Buells with 3 separate belts, so I guess I have been fortunate 3 times. I am sure I just jinxed myself, so I am sure my streak will be over soon. lol} |

Fresno, 5 Buells here easily totaling 100k miles, 2 breaks

The older XB's had a replacement interval of about 15,000 miles, but that was with the older belt design. They upgraded them over the years and got rid of the replacement interval, you now simply replace them when they break, or whenever you feel like. I recommend 25,000 miles. |

I recommend 25,000 miles. Just be sure not to replace a 60,000 mile belt with a 6 mile belt. } |

@bueller4ever. Yeah. Guards in place The WOT comment is helpful, i could see how a hard shift while popping the slack out of the belt could be a bad thing. |

Just an FYI - The belt in the thread that Duphuckincati linked to is STILL on Loretta. She had 16.2k when I did that, she has 26k now, 2 years later. I forgot I added the "breakdown wrench" to the end of that thread too, very helpful. Zack |

On the topic of hard shifts I had a similar experience in my Vette years ago. I power shifted and hit third gear hard enough to light the tires which immediately started a very load rapping noise which kept changing sound level and frequency before settling into a constant rapping. I was just around the corner from my house so I ran her home and shut her down. She was long past warranty and I kept seeing the $1200 figure flash in my head. Opening the hood led to one of the most relieving moments in my life after I noticed that I hit it hard enough to jump the serpentine belt one groove on the pulleys which caused it to rub on the bottom of the motor and fling the chards against numerous items under the hood. The $1200 instantly turned into $50! |
